Delta's Operational move from T5 to T2/3 at LAX:

Delta has moved to: T2 and T3 with eventual connector to TBIT (note: there is currently only airside bus service to stay securely between T2 & T3, the walking connector has not been built yet.)

Where to check bags: As of January 13, 2020, non-Sky Priority customers must check their bag(s) at the terminal their flight departs from, unless their flight departs from TBIT, in which case, they must check their bag at Terminal 2. Sky priority customers can check their bag at either terminal. See this link for more information.

Date(s) of move: May 12, 2017 - May 17, 2017

Here is a helpful chart from Delta which covers all Domestic / Int'l. transfer combos (AND TOTAL TRANSFER TIMES) between T2, T3 & TBIT.

New Bus Routes will help with connections:
- Circular Airfield Bus between TBIT, T2 and T3
- Airfield Bus between T2 and T3

Bus Map

Will there be a SkyClub: Yes, there is one in each terminal. Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse will remain.
- The SkyClub in T2 opened on May 20th (Former AC Maple Leaf Lounge)
pix in post 1058
- The SkyClub in T3 opened on May 24th (Former VX Loft)

https://www.delta.com/content/www/en...d-updates.html

Where Will The Delta One Check In Lounge Be Located:

Delta will temporarily offer dedicated check-in space in Terminal 2 (first door closest to T1) while a long-term Delta One experience is finalized.
In T2, there is a small Delta One seating area with refreshments. An agent will escort you from the check in/lounge area through a back pathway up stairs to TSA precheck. Its a shorter walk to check-in at SkyPriority and easier if you have a carry on and don't want to drag it up a flight of stairs. 11/3/17)

Airlines joining DL in T2/3 for landside and departures:
- AeroMexico (T2)
- Virgin Atlantic (T2)
- WestJet (T3)

Landside T2 only, departures from TBIT:
- Virgin Australia
- Volaris

Landside T3 only, departures from TBIT:
- Avianca/Taca
- Copa (effective April 7)
- InterJet

Will there be secure links between T2-T3 and TBIT: Yes, the final plan is to let pax walk between all airside.

After a few flights of easy connections via T2 I finally got to enjoy the pleasure of how messed up this is. On a flight HNL-LAX on Saturday into T2. No problem. Spending the night in LA and then back LAX-MCO Sunday on a separate rez. Delta app says gate 133 in T2. Now we all know that doesn't exist. Flightaware tells me gate 133 in TBIT. The man driving the National Rental Car bus says he has never heard of a Delta flight leaving TBIT, only T2 or T3. I call Delta Plat line and they say go to T2. I listened against my better judgement (knowing that 133 was in TBIT and we had only carryons) and went through T2. Got to experience the joy of going through T2 security and taking the shuttle to TBIT. What a pain in the rear that was.

Is T2 security especially tough? I have a flight in a few weeks that I believe will be out of T2.

I would say not especially tough. I've been through 2 times as Pre and was a breeze. On Sunday I went through regular screening b/c the wife did not have Pre. I had a backpack w/ a Surface, Kindle, and cell phone and I guess the xr didn't like all the electronics. I had to submit to manual search of my backpack. Otherwise all ok.

The 3pm MCO flight has been going out of TBIT Gate 133 for the past month or so. DL doesn't have Check In facilities in TBIT however only DL flights to ATL/DTW/JFK/DCA/Hawaii/and INTL flights can check in at T2 and all other flight must go to T3.

If you have PreCheck it's better to clear security at T2 and take the shuttle to 133, or T4 and walk over.

Considerably more gates and a direct connection to TBIT flights. Neither of which was possible in the old location.

DL has a multi-year plan to build all the other fancy features they used to have into their new terminals.

Not that DL cares about this but it also allowed VX and AS to co-locate and allowed the LAA and LUS ops to come closer together. Someone back in 2010 actually posted something on a blog title "How To Fix LAX Alliance Issue" and it was almost spot on with what actually happend with the only difference being AS using some of T3.

This. And they got an extra four or six gates the day they moved into T2/3. All the other benefits are marketing hype: the opportunity to get more gates was entirely what this was about, not a promise of better facilities in 2055 or whenever. They could have made T5 as gorgeous as they're claiming the T2/3 facility will be if making the facility pretty or nice for customers were there top goal. (That's not to say they're not investing heavily to make this facility very nice in the long run and tolerable in the short term; by all indications, they are.)

They had a direct connection to TBIT in T5 (thanks to AA's investment). T3 will be a bit closer to some TBIT gates than T5 is, once the T3 connector opens, but I have trouble believing that that was a driving factor.

I disagree completely. Making your customers walk thru your biggest competitor's terminal?? AA would set up signs to poach DL customers "If you were an AA customer, you'd be at your gate already".

I disagree that's a "direct connection"

It was definitely not a "direct" connection as you had to walk through T4 and DL never had any Gates in TBIT until the move when they got access to Gate 133.

Fair enough, though if it weren't for the terminal shuffle, AA would still be split between T4, T6, and TBIT and would thus also still have their customers walking through Delta's terminal (though they don't have to go upstairs into T5, they did have to walk along that long DL-branded tunnel).

But I still maintain that Delta is spending however many billions of dollars they are on this primarily for the extra gates, not primarily to make their customers' experience better. (I don't begrudge them that choice; I think it's the right one. And I think it's very clear that this terminal swap makes things better, in the long run, for LAWA, AA, ASVX, and DL and their customers, but DL customers get significant short- and mid-term pain.)

27 ADG-III (e.g., 737) gates

(Anything other than that will result in a number of gate dependencies. Remember Delta will have to share its gates with VS and SU.)
