If either XNA or VPS are available next weekend, I will probably snag one. Presently, I have no travel scheduled until the 24th

However, I am at a crossroads as to how to proceed with a flight history application that I was going to work on. My focus so far has been on the web application that allows users to export data, track upgrades, and have a little more granular look at the data. The conundrum is figuring out whether to build a mobile app that is accessed via a web address or an iPhone application or both. I'd like to allow users to make a quick entry on the go and then later refine said entry, getting rid of the problem of remembering every flight. With an iPhone app I can do things like make it location aware, so, you get on a plane, click a button "Start Trip", and it records the current location. Walking off the plane click "End Trip/Flight" and it records the ending point. What it sounds like you're building is a UI front-end on the iPhone to a system, not building the system on the phone. I'd talk to the guy from OpenFlights about latching on to his system (or just use the code he's developed, as it is open source) and then leverage your start/stop buttons and the airport data to be able to populate those fields as well as the date fields, but use something on the back-end that has all the other features. |

Shhhh... that NDA you signed says you can't say anything about it. ;)

I believe Apple dropped the NDA for released software (i.e. the SDK) last week.
I've thought about talking to the OpenFlights creator, though I am a critic of the mapping/GIS stuff behind it. |

Plenty of fall foliage up here in ROC this weekend. Rent a car and drive to Letchworth State Park. There's even a festival on in the city itself: link. Eat BBQ at Dinosaur. Normally I wouldn't advise traveling to ROC for leisure, but this is one of the better weekends in the year to do it if you've never been here and want to add it to your FlightMemory... ;)
I think this is my first post in the Box, btw. |
So, are you looking at creating a tool to track upgrades and provide related data or one that will track flights and have mapping capabilities (similar to FM)? Or both?
The use of OpenLayers on OpenFlights was an interesting thought but I think the OF creator pushed OL beyond its limits. IMO, the maps quickly become cluttered and hard to navigate. I think mapping flights would be equally challenging on the iPhone - at least from a design/UI perspective. |

Sortof. You can now share if Apple has approved your software, but you still cannot if they haven't. At least someone starting up now can leverage the knowledge of someone who's already gone through the process, but technically I wouldn't be allowed to show my code to one of them for troubleshooting help if it hadn't been approved yet. At least that is how I understand the rule. Stupid.
I guess everything is up in the air until the new NDA is actually sent out and the exact language is reviewed. |

I think mapping flights would be equally challenging on the iPhone - at least from a design/UI perspective. Some functionality I plan on having is seeing a single route and details about that route, seeing a "trip" with multiple segments - think IAH-EWR-FRA-AMS-IAH as a trip and you can view the segments within the trip, possible link to photo galleries to add pictures from a trip, and planned/completed trips - you know you are going to Houston in four weeks, you fly there and just click "complete" on trip. I see things like Placely and TripIt as great trip planners and trackers but I'd like to focus more on the flying side of it. Also, the NDA changes allow for discussion about the SDK itself. |

I have a photo question actually a 2 part question 1 If Im shooting with an ultra wide angle lens ( Sony 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 DT AF ) , does it need more light , It seems like the shots come out darker 2 could the hood for the lens cause the problem Suggestions 2. The hood is supposed to block light entering from odd angles and therefore help with flare. Darkness depends on where your light is coming from. (ETA: What are you shooting that you're that wide? Could be a white balance setting...upon further ETA, could have something to do with the f/4.5 thing too.) In other news, the date hath set: March 20, 2011. In the space of a few hours last night, we picked a date, a venue, confirmed that the religious official of my choice will comp me a service as a thanks for brides I referred to her, and picked the save the dates/invites. There will also be a groom's cake: Palm chocolate. ^^ |

I think this is my first post in the Box, btw. We've got a Dinosaur here in NYC, too. Not as many CO miles, but a much easier commute. |
