I'd like to get an iPhone for all the apps as well, but I have an iTouch now and I really struggle with the virtual keyboard. I find the Blackberry so much more accurate and quick. I don't know if there's a trick to the virtual keyboard or what, but I just don't get it.

I'm trying to decide what to do with my phone. I currently have a T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve 8900, which I like, but the main reason I've had a BlackBerry the last four years was due to work. Since August, I've been carrying around two BlackBerry devices, since my employer changed the old mobile phone plan where they just reimbursed us, and put us on a corporate plan with a company-issued device. So, here are my options:
  1. Keep the phone I have.
  2. Keep T-Mobile and upgrade to the new BlackBerry Bold 9700 when it launches in the near future. That would solve the slower data speeds that I have on the current device, but not some of the general complaint I have about BlackBerry regarding web browsing, navigation with the trackball/trackpad, and availability of apps.
  3. Ditch the T-Mobile account I've had for nearly 10 years, from back when it was Voicestream. Pay $200 or so in early termination fees. Switch to AT&T and get an iPhone, which has more of the features I want in a device. The downside would be cost, which is probably similar to option 2 (I won't qualify for a full upgrade from T-Mobile for another 18 months), going to a device with no keyboard, and giving up a few features that are better on the BlackBerry than the iPhone, such as the camera, and UMA access. I also would have a slightly more expensive monthly bill, but after the up front cost of acquisition, the monthly expenses wouldn't be significantly different.

I'm not sure what I should do.

Why not unlock the 8900 and sell it on ebay. Take said cash and the $200 you would have spent and purchase an unlocked iPhone and not have to suffer on AT&Ts awful network?

Between selling your 8900, $200 and the cost of the iPhone at AT&T, the cost is likely the same.

The trick is to just stick with it and use it regularly. Eventually, you get used to it and you should be able to type just as fast and as accurately as you would on a BB.

After almost being run over by an Atlanta city police officer speeding through a parking lot at 35-40 MPH talking on her cell phone, and witnessing three cars running stop signs while the drivers were talking on the phone, and witnessing another driver driving on the wrong side of the street while talking on her phone, all in a 20 minute trip from my loft to the Office Depot less than a mile away, I'm more in favor than ever of a nation-wide ban on using a cell phone without a hands-free device while driving. I swear, Atlanta has the worst drivers anywhere, and I drive in multiple states and cities every week. I don't see the crap I see here every weekend in every places with nearly the same frequency. I've had it with this crap. People here are idiots in their cars, and I'm tired of a routine errand feeling like I'm going to be killed because of these morons who can't drive unless they have a phone held up to their face.

I've thought about that. The 8900 would go on eBay if I upgrade regardless. It's in great shape and should get a decent amount.

The only problem with unlocking the iPhone is I'd still lack 3G access. T-Mobile's 3G runs on a different band from AT&Ts, and the iPhone 3GS would only get EDGE data on the T-Mobile network. In that situation I'd be just as well to keep the current device and save the hassle.

I'm slowly getting better with using my partner's iPhone, but I still find it more difficult to type on accurately than a real keyboard.

In my perfect world, the iPhone would exist with a camera that's as good as the newest BlackBerry devices, and support UMA, and be available on a variety of networks, and have a slideout keyboard. Oh, and I'd be able to choose that device with any carrier, without any sacrifice of features.

Obviously my perfect world doesn't exist, and neither does that phone. But it should.

Not that I would promote such a thing, but if one was to call Tmo tech support and tell them that their Blackberry keeps rebooting and one has already reflashed the firmware, Tmo will send a refurb/new BB out and thus one could sell said device as new and not used fetching some extra money.

I'd ask J.Edward since he uses his iPhone on the Tmo network. I've never had much of an issue with EDGE personally plus the iPhone does have WiFi to leverage.

Additionally, i've found ATT's 3g to be useless at times and slower than EDGE with how over burdened it is.

Good Evening Box:

Hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday/Sunday! Hard to believe that in just a few short hours that CO will be gone from ST (which is not a bad thing I know). As an NW elite, my strategy used to be, cheap fares on NW (knowing I'd get an upgrade) then more expensive fares on CO ("y-ups") and the like. IMHO, *A and CO will be a great fit!^

It's funny, I did exactly the opposite of you this summer and ditched my 2G iPhone for a T-Mo 8900. Now, I can't speak for the 3G(S), but the 8900 is a far better phone than the iPhone. My main complaint on the iPhone was call volume and overall speed of the device. I installed the 3.0 software and it was so slow thereafter. It would normally take 20-30 seconds for application to launch.

I do miss the browser on the iPhone, but I don't honestly do a ton of mobile browsing. If I really need to, I can just pop out the laptop with my aircard.

The 8900 will play mp3's which is nice in a pinch. I also bought one of the new 16GB iPod Nanos.
