G'day, Box. The rain has finally stopped here so I spent a little time with the lawnmower sucking up some leaves.

Now, I'm watching Survivorman@:-) since I never know when I'm going to make a wrong turn in the woods.;)

I shudder at the thought of needing to own a car.

And when a New Yorker really needs to use a car, in-town rental locations abound. For example, Battery Park residents can rent from Avis on the two block walk to their local grocery store.

True, though I haven't seen this one. I enjoy Les much more than Man vs. Wild. Bear Grylls is a bit too 'out there' for me(and he cheats). I don't really think I'll belay down a cliff using my shoelaces.

I think this is true of most big cities on the East Coast, at least. Being a locovore is in fashion, remember. In the Philly area you can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone from Lancaster County selling meats or produce, and there is lots of cheese and wine and beer and so forth produced locally.

I think it all depends on what you're used to. I lived in NYC for a number of years and was never quite comfortable there, despite its many advantages and the fact that I like urban living. I used to say that my minimum criteria for a city are a decent symphony orchestra and an American League team; clearly Philly doesn't meet both of these criteria but it strikes me in many ways as a bigger version of my hometown, with all of its pluses and minuses. We have become very comfortable here.

There is also Zipcar, no? Here there are two competing short-term car rental/share services for precisely this reason. We need cars because we live in the suburbs and my office is nowhere near public transport, but when I worked in the city of Philadelphia we made do with one car just fine.

Believe me, I know all about that them. Don't underestimate the value of ZipCar, either. Or Hertz Connect (their version of the same idea). ^

I've only used Zipcar in Atlanta; there is/was a location on W Peachtree close to the BoA tower/Bell South/Ga State area.

Posting that mention of Avis in Battery Park triggered one of those feelings of sadness and loss that still come all too often: remembering the CO CTO in World Trade north, by the departure/arrival point of the EWR bus.

Walked up and among the young sheep, scratching the ears of one that has grown very tame; nothing has ever given her reason to sense loss or fear. Somehow, that helped.

You woke up that late? Cool photo. Room photo or from the outdoor stair landing next to the elevators?
