If anything, I've found obtaining organic and non-mass produced produce and meats easier living in the city than in a rural area. You can't find that stuff at all in the area where I grew up, which, while being quite rural, is not especially agricultural. Grocery stores there are full of nothing but crap. Yet, in Houston, the better quality and fresher stuff is quite easy to find in a variety of places. I've had a similar experience in Atlanta, and when shopping in places like NYC, Philly, DC, and Boston, I've seen a lot of it too. I think part of it has to do with cost and average income levels, as many times the better stuff does cost a little more. In economically depressed rural areas, where the majority of shoppers are buying on price alone, the demand simply isn't there for items produced organically, or in smaller, more localized operations, if it costs more. Stores like Super Wal-Mart and their pre-packaged meat and produce departments have also helped to facilitate making finding those items in more rural areas more difficult. On the other hand, in some areas, if there is an abudance of agricultural industry, it's not as difficult, or expensive, to buy from a local producer.

For those who like that genre, Ray Mears has done several survival-themed series for the BBC since the 90s. His shows are pretty good (especially Extreme Survival, Bushcraft, and Walkabout).

Sorry...on the Diamond Head facing side. :p

I made the trek (only a 15 min walk) up to Rainbow for breakfast. I think I made a mistake in ordering (fried rice instead of meat) but it is pretty darn delicious. I'm debating now if I should order second breakfast to eat on the beach or pool deck in an hour.

I use to eat there every day while in high school, as my former school is located on Diamond Head. We would show up at exactly 10am for lunch. I would order the chili or hamburger steak. My drink of choice was always Fruit Punch, never Coke.

There have been times when I had to pee to save my life but never a time when drinking it would save my life. :D

I wonder if someone has hacked the T-Mobile site? I logged into my account to pay my bill, and on the right side of the screen where they post offers and such, there's a section promoting the MobileLife service. Under that, in the sample photo album, is cartoon porn, including multiple pictures of a nude Betty Boop enjoying herself .

And, I believe, that's really just "reality" TV grossness. Remembering my AF ('Force' not 'France') survival training, drinking it shuts down the kidneys in short order, and can induce various kinds of poisoning. What we were taught is that is placed inside a "solar still," where the heat evaporates the water, which condenses on the plastic cover, where it drops back into a fresh water receptacle.

Not the stuff that makes good "reality" TV, but a way to recycle the water. C-Mike (or any other current or ex- military), do you remember anything from your survival training?

OMG....that show on House was wrong! He had some poor guy drink a woman's urine. In fact I believe House told him that urine was sterile and ok to drink. Last time I believe a TV Doctor show. :D

I do know that drink salt water is a quick way to death.

One problem I have with those "man alone against the wild," with just the camera crew, director, production company rep and bonding company stooge present, was lampooned by Mad Magazine years ago, in the form of photo journalism. Like the exclusive pictures of the first man to reach the summit of some unclimbed peak. The photo, of course, being shot down at the climber making the last few feet. The photographer had climbed up earlier, in order to get the historic shot.

That is why survivor man was cool, he'd have to set a cam on a tripod get a sweeping shot of him going, then trek back to pickup the camera....one of those sucks to be you moments but still cool. No doubt this was a major factor in the stresses and mental ability for one to handle this type of show only so long. the body and brain both can only handle so much.

If House said it's okay, then my memory must be wrong. He certainly would not do or say anything that was not totally in a patient's interest. He's a modern day Albert Schweitzer, only cuter. ;)

The other sentence I left in your quote, though, seems to suggest something beyond sterility might be at issue, huh?
