I hate the subway, and really dislike the shopping. :)

no farms to buy local beef, chicken, cheese, milk, etc not to mention lack of land to grow a pecan tree.

I'd probably manage out in NJ between EWR and PHL, at least you can drive to a store and back home.

I love the subway. But then, I took Metro all the time in Houston, too, and take MARTA to/from the airport in Atlanta most weeks.

Us city living foodies find the places to get the fresh stuff. Just takes a little research to seek them out.

I kinda laughed internally about the 5 people I have seen today carrying two handfuls of groceries home....I guess if I lived int he city I'd adapt and just buy food that would fit in a backpack for the day/meal instead of getting soem good bargains on larger amounts.

Still not my thing ;)

then again in miami, I saw a guy that went down to dadeland just because bestbuy was near the metro rail, then he managed to get a 42" PROJECTION TV that was on bargain sale back up the platform and back to his condo, but he was so tired I had to help him get the thing in the condo and elevator....

Yeah, you do end up making more trips to buy less. But, when living in a much smaller space, you don't have as much room to store a bunch of crap either. It's an entirely different way of doing things. Not bad, just different.

Or just buy the normal amount and have a cart or have the grocery deliver it.

There are plenty of places to get very fresh/local (<200 miles) meats, cheeses, produce and many other things. They are not particularly obvious to someone visiting for the first time but they are very much available.

Does HNL count?

The sushi place I want to try for dinner is full. :( I'm waiting to see if a seat at the counter opens up anytime soon.

OMG, I am going to be in HNL on Wednesday thru Sunday. I am taking a grim reaper costume on the trip to join in the madness - If anyone is there, just look for the 250 pound ambient reaper (who may have been overserved at the Hyatt lounge). :D

BTW, which sushi place? As you can tell, I love to get HNL recommendations... I have only been there 3 times so far this year...
