I've sadly revisited both of those fairly recently - NCAA Tournament Game in North Little Rock, Arkansas in 2008; stayed in Missouri coming back from the Berkshire Annual Meeting in May.

Wrong or not, that has to put you in some vanishingly tiny fraction of the American public. Aside from some inveterate, civilization-ends-at-the-Hudson New Yorkers, I doubt there are many with a state/country ratio like that.

And I thought that the cocktail party drop line, that most Americans outside the Beltway can't name both senators of three different states, was a discriminator.

Not me - don't need much more Beatles. Amazon has a special offer where one gets a whole $1 in MP3 downloads for dropping $180 on the set.

I can't even name both from my own state (don't know the junior's name). But I also don't know what that (or any other random stat) proves. So I don't pay much attention to politics? Maybe it is because I'm not in the country enough. :p

Okay. This is gnawing at me, and neither dinner nor search engine gave me the definitive answer. Is it "Were it me,..." or "Were it I..."? Both sound right, but I think the subjunctive gets the second person. Anybody know?

what makes people think 'leather = comfort' leather has ZERO to do with comfort in any way, padding in the seat, seat pitch, and seat design make a seat comfortable, NOTIHNG to do with leather.

I believe it is the former - restructuring like Chomsky might suggest that the structure parallels the hypothetical "If it were me" in meaning ...

I believe it is the former -- I just re-arrange it to 'If it were me...I...'

I agree and would add that some of the NW cloth seats were much more comfortable than leather alternatives.

Of course it proves nothing. In fact, it was only the wine at dinner that made me make any association in the first place. You more countries-than states stat, however, is genuinely impressive, and hardly random.

My goodness -- we are often thinking along the same lines!^

Being from MD, I sadly know too many of the current Senate class. I also know (and have met) both of TN's senators; one is fairly well respected (as Senators go), a former governor and university chancellor. The other is a DB and ticks me off.
