Found out the job MR BL emailed me was one he is looking at. So with my travel and him traveling up to 100%, I think our nanny might quit. Or I'll have to hire another one. Or pay her double.

CO 1E, regarding CM's proposal, if we don't ask for exactly what we want, we are afraid we won't get it ;)

But it does make one wonder if NW ever fixes their broken APUs, or just depend indefinitely on using the air carts to get the engines going when one dies.

I am somewhat surprised to hear that they have so many APU issues. At the EWR mini-DO we were talking with the guy on the tour of the engine rebuild facility and he mentioned that the APU is considered a critical part of the ETOPS program and that if there are two failures of the same part (i.e. APUs across the entire fleet) the ETOPS cert can be suspended. I do not know if non-ETOPS aircraft can contribute to such a suspension nor do I know if the NW A320s are ETOPS (I assume not), but it was an interesting tidbit during the tour.

I was thinking I should take a knee on Daytona Beach when we're down there in September. Does anyone in the Box know that area well enough to recommend a spot? We're doing two nights Daytona and two nights MCO on a timeshare promo. She has said that she does not want to get married on the beach, but would like the proposal to happen on the beach. We're doing PHL-CLE-MCO on 11 Sept, and return on 15th. I did seriously consider trying to do it via PA on the flight to MCO, but I've been warned that a public proposal is a bad idea. She's a beach person and that does seem like the best idea, but that just seems too easy. I've done 14 proposal setups for clients (flowers, dinner, misdirection, you name it) and I'm coming up blank for myself - talk about annoying.

Have you ever been to DAB before? Not high on my list at all. It just isn't a nice city thanks to the regular trashing that it sees from visitors during bike week, Spring Break and the Daytona 500. The folks don't try real hard to keep up the properties and things are not all that great. The Hilton is pretty nice overall, and I got a sweet upgrade as a Diamond, but there is not much else to recommend the town.

That being said, an engagement would certainly make the place more enjoyable. There is plenty of open beach there. Walking along it should make for a reasonable backdrop at some point.

FWIW, I don't know if I would want to remember my proposal being on Daytona Beach but there are some good spots around there if you're okay driving a few miles.

I saw your blog post on DAB. Funny stuff. I only picked DAB because I want to tour the racetrack and see the beach. I'm not into NASCAR at all; I'm going to see it and say I was there, and check out the museum. (For the record, I'm much much more of an F1 guy.)

I don't even necessarily have to do it on the trip - I'm just kicking around ideas and trying to not have her see it coming.

The museum is okay but if you are an F1 fan, you'll be disappointed ;)

I can send you a NASCAR cooler to hide the ring in and you can propose to her on the track :D

My JFK->EWR transit was actually timely (thanks to all the sage advice I received here in The Box). Have even had time to get to the PC, have a drink, and make this post. 21,158 miles down, 2,030 to go...

rkkwan, sounds like you made out like a bandit with the Westin Times Square.

I'll agree that DAB s not the nicest city that FL has to offer. ;) However, you should certainly be able to find a nice location on the beach to pop the question.

A day trip up to St. Augustine could be a nice option as well...

Got Platinum Card in the mail today

Not the most impressive welcome package, but fair enough. Got 4 CO Currency, Hertz No. 1 Club Gold invitation, National Executive Status invitation, Free Cocktail and 1000 miles on W Stays till the end of this year and two luggage identification cards.

But most important: My CO Platinum membership card :)

My parents have a place in St. Augustine and I grew up an hour and a half away. I've been going there for ~20 years now, plus or minus a couple. I love it. Definitely in my top 10 beaches in the world (the Crescent Beach area, south of town). It is generally uncrowded and quiet, with very wide sandy beach areas and nice water. The main down side is no snorkeling/diving to keep you entertained if you need more than the great sand and the water. Not much in the way of surf either, but I don't so that also doesn't bother me.

And the 500 year old fort isn't bad for a visit. It is about 60 minutes right up I-95 if you want that as an option. I can provide more details as well. I'll be there again in late August and can stage something if you want.

We may have a winner. This can, of course, be discussed in further detail at The Penalty Box New Jersey Golf Micro-DO. Rumors of comped golf are swirling about...I should know something for sure in the next day or two.

I just might take you up on that, sir. Many thanks. I'm thinking the beach and the fort might make for a nice combination.

Comped golf is a good thing! I look forward to it! The course looks pretty nice as well. Now, I just need to figure out how inexpensively I can fly from EWR/ABE to ACY. :)

BTW congrats on the 7000th Box post!

Hate to tell you, but it doesn't exist. Though if you are down in PBI beforehand, you can (shudder) take NK to ACY. If you end up doing that, let me know.

ETA: Or did I not pick up on sarcasm again?

sdm1130 Jul 7, 2008 6:03 pm

Unfortunately, I have to leave PBI tomorrow evening. :(

No sarcasm - it could make for some interesting FM lines...

EDIT: Hmm - I forgot DL pulled out of ACY... Doesn't look like it would be possible.

I'm back at it again trying to figure out how to us my NW miles on CO.

So, to upgrade one way of my NRT trip I need to have an H or Y fare. Both of my segments are V so I'll need to change one and am trying to estimate how much that would be (before worrying about availability and all that). Trying to do a change on CO.com is giving me an error so I did this, but I wonder if I am off base or not:

Price two RT tickets today using the same dates but with the H fare:$3500
Price of the two RT V class ticket: $2150
Difference between H-RT and V-RT: $1350
Estimate of fare difference for two one segment changes: $675
Change fee for two people (but 1 pnr): $200
Total to change one segment for two people to H: $875

So, is my logic sound?

Considering what a few hours in Y was like to FLL $875 for two doesn't sound bad, I'll take it one way w/the miles.

No help from the box? Is this something for the front page?

If it is a V fare both directions then you are pretty close on the numbers since they should be equal in both directions. Where are you flying from?

You can also just call the co.com helpdesk or the elite line and ask how much it'll cost. ;)

BTW, make sure that there are upgrade seats available before paying extra. Otherwise you'll be throwing money away. You cannot waitlist using NW miles.
