I was supposed to be in SFO this week but some things came up at work that required me to be here. I'll be doing a run Saturday morning to AUS to seal Gold for next year, but that's approximately two hours of flying.

She'll have a lot of time to rest which is definitely what she needs.

I know I'm in the vast minority on this, but I think airline/hotel status is stupid. Yes, I very much appreciate -- and take full advantage of -- everything that's given to me because of it. But the way some people wear it like a badge of honor kills me. I suppose it's designed to feed egos, and make people feel better about their brand relationship, but it's not a license to be self-important or look down on anyone else.

So what. I have a job that makes me travel frequently. That makes me no different than anyone else on that plane or in the hotel as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, I find myself getting impatient when people don't know how the system works. But that's more of a cause of people not paying attention to their surroundings than anything else. My experiences in the non-travel world tell me that it has nothing to do with status.

I'm a firm believer that airline status should be renamed:
  • Thanks for your repeat business, here's a bone. [Silver]
  • We appreciate your (company's) money. [Gold]
  • Really? Are you able to maintain friends or family? [Platinum]
  • Honestly, we feel sorry for you.[100K]

ETA -- now give me my $#@&ing companion upgrades. I'M ENTITLED TO IT!

If you want to get yourself perma-Pandied from the UA Forum, post the bolded section over there...then wait 30 minutes and watch the criticism of their forum either get ignored or disappear in another verboten manner.

I have said anytime that it came up in the natural flow of the discussion in several places on FT that there are a certain group of  who take their status way way way too seriously, and my underlying theory is that they take the wrong mental approach to it, and that these people fly and are on the road so much that the wallet candy goes from being an amenity to a very well-integrated part of who they are. It turns into something that is deep-seated and psychologically incorrect. I do not believe that to be true about anyone in The Box, hence why I hang out here.

No, sorry. I'm in FLL 13th-15th. Grandma's 80th.

Was anyone considering bringing their Do IV nametags for those of us who have not met one another? I still have the  necklace that SFOTerry gave me, and I was considering hanging that out the car window as a beacon for icurhere2 to look for upon pickup tomorrow. :D

I'll bring it but keep it in my pocket in case no one else wears theirs. I don't want to be the only  wearing one.

Minor point of digression here. In order to get good at something you have to repeat it. If you're that tool that is holding everyone else up at the shoe carnival, chances are more that you're an infrequent flyer and less that you're just someone with a neutral zone around their head. I'm not trying to split hairs, but there can be very varied causes for stupidity at airports.

Actually, my CO Do IV nametag was one of the first things I remembered to pack.

I can see my fiancee now: "You didn't tell me about the nametags. My God, you are a geek."

I don't disagree at all. For example, most people don't know that the metal "cap" on a ballcap will set-off the metal detector. I have all the patience in the world (usually) as people try and figure out the little subtleties of security.

But when people have to fish through their bag for the BP at the ID check point. I mean, come on. You're just not paying attention.

And, I'm sorry, but your guitar will not fit in the overhead bin on an ERJ. There are certain laws of physics that do apply here, and you're just going to have to accept that.

It's the same thing with people that don't have their passports and cards filled out going through immigration. What did you think was going on at these little booths with immigration officers -- a bake sale?

Gate lice amuse me. It's a plane. It's not just going to up and vanish. If you're at the gate and you have a ticket, you're getting on. Simmer down, pedro.
