Saskatoon sounds like a fun place to fly to in F for the heck of it.

I've been there a couple of times, and it's actually pretty nice place to visit.

There's the obvious safety buffer included in road projects to keep cars away from the road crew, but if ssullivan wasn't exaggerating and it was 20 miles, that's a touch much. (My father did road labor in a former life...and as if The Box didn't know, I'm one of those people that tends to know a little bit about everything.)

Leisure weekend travel suggestions?

Wife and I are looking for a weekend travel destination. Our preference is more Northern climes than Southern/tropical. Looking at leaving on a Thursday night and returning Sunday. International is OK (both have passports).

My first thought was SEA because we've been there for a short visit and didn't see enough. Reasonable flight, and I can hopefully (maybe!) get an afternoon in plane spotting.

Plan on purchasing airfare and using miles (Marriott) for hotel. Rental car is OK. Dates are 6/27, 7/4 (bad idea?) or 7/11.

Thanks! :)

You could go to Toronto, Portland (Maine), or my favorite, Niagra Falls. (You could fly into Buffalo and stay at the Marriott right on the falls.

Aside from my July 4 IAH-FRA-CPT-FRA-MXP-JFK-MIA-IAH, I don't think it will go too much higher.

Great Circle calls that routing a hair over 23K. How much of that 23K will go toward your BIS total given your policy of not including awards in that number, I'm not sure. But 135K BIS excl. freebies is still complete lunacy.

Fly into SEA, look around for a day (that's all you really need for SEA), then either take the ferry or fly Horizon to Victoria, B.C. Stunning place. Be sure to visit Butchart Gardens (Photos Here). For hotels in town, the Fairmont Empress is right on the harborfront, and has gorgeous views. Heck, skip Seattle altogether. Victoria is the place to be!

No. Awards go into the BIS calculation (am not counting EQMs, just BIS). My EQM totals would be way out of whack (over 200K), because I earn EQMs at 300% on F fares with BD.

Edited - So far, the only award I have flown on this year was IAH-FRA-OSL; FRA-IAH. So, about 11,000mi. of that total are award flights.

Emphasis mine.

Re: SEA

Excellent planespotters locale thanks to Boeing, of course. I would love to go there, just to see if my girlfriend passes out walking thru Pike's Market...she's not a seafood girl, though she is slowly coming around.

Hmm....we're looking for a similar plan, though specifically for the 7/4 weekend. I was thinking that leaving the country might be the best plan, but I'm not sure. Time to check if the PTY fares are still low for that weekend...

And I'd skip Niagra, at least not for a full weekend. Maybe fly in to BUF and out of YYZ and drive the difference or something. But Niagra only takes a few hours, and that is if you do the boat shtick (which wasn't all bad). Otherwise the town is really, really bad.

Hey, you just reminded me. We have a family friend in Langford, B.C. that we've been looking for an excuse to see. :D

I'm going to FLL for the 4th of July weekend, specifically arriving the night of the 2nd and leaving on the 6th, and am not finding any great deals on a rental car. The best I can get is a Pontaica G6 at Avis with my corporate rate for $183 with all taxes and fees. I realize it's a holiday weekend, but I figured it was the low season on FLL and the rental prices would be better. Am I missing something, or out of touch on rental prices?

PTY is around 400 for that weekend

Try AWD A113400 with Avis. Should be a much better rate, including 200 miles/day and fuel refill at the pump prices. I use it and never tank up, saving me 15 minutes on my race back to the airport which is always convenient.

In other news, my EQM's for this year are pretty low. Only 18k on CO, which is probably the lowest its ever been on my "carrier of choice" since I started my "professional life." It's diluted thanks to some trips on other carriers, but mainly my company has been shying away from travel thanks to the cost of everything.

Only 2 trips booked for June so far. Both only East coast hops. :( Probably one out to the West Coast at the end of June, another definite in July, and then - uhm - who knows. I'm confident I'll make Plat for 09, but it probably won't be until Dec. and I might have to fly to SAV for Christmas via IAH to accomplish it.

The nature of my job is I generally don't know where I'll be more than a week in advance, so there's a possibility I could have over 100k EQM's by Sept. But, as of right now, all is quiet on the horizon. :(

This is what my job is like, though I have no work trips planned. :(
