I wonder if the c-17 crash rumor....was just someone not used to them flying at treetop level?
I have c130s and C17s fly over just above the level of my house the C130s make a bit of vibration but the c17s shake the place so bad it is like an earthquake.

A 4,000 foot strip is about twice what they need to practice on. The C-17 had a spec in the original RFP that it be able to get off an unimproved airstrip with some sort of load (not full, but something) within 1,500 feet. I don't think they'd practice on a municipal strip, they aren't made to handle that sort of load from each tire. I'd imagine if they intentionally tried to land in a non distressed situation on a 4000ft strip and messed it up the city would be giving the feds a ring for complete repair pretty quick. |
Looks like i'll be flying DL for 25k to get Plat for next year. :)
How many earned statuses can I have for this year. Hmmm. |
For the NY people, I found a source for pig candy (chocolate covered bacon). Roni Sue in Union Square. www.roni-sue.com

Poo. I'm out. Devils tickets.
True...is there anything else around there that would merit flying that low? Nothing military, no drop zone, firing range, etc.? There is a NG base training center that is operated by the engineering battalion they do all kinds of demolitions and such in the area for drug houses now. |

GNV is a municipal strip that gets used all the time for practice runs out of NAS-JAX. We used to watch the big birds do touch-and-gos and the like all the time. Then again, GNV is much longer than 4K.
They land at ABI all the time, I have seen B1Bs and C5s doing touch and go around and around. of note GNV and ABI both are called 'regional' and not just 'municipal' |
