What to do in Dallas?

Hey box buds,

We are heading to DFW June 6 (the bf has a conference at the Gaylord), but we are spending a couple nights at the W downtown over the weekend.

As we have never been to big D - any recommendations for good steak places we should hit? Or anything else that is a must-visit?

Thanks for your expert advice!

John

Steak?! Well, I guess that's acceptable but you should definitely try to find a good TexMex place.

Hmmmm, let's see, where are my favorite places in the Big D...

EWR-BWI usually involves about 35-45 minutes of wheels up time in an ERJ, depending on which approach they use into BWI. The Q400 takes a bit longer.

My condolences that you are having Dallas foisted upon you. I hear Ft. Worth is actually quite nice, though. A friend of mine that lives up there even tells me they have a Flying Saucer of their own...

There is a N9ne Steakhouse adjacent to the W , the steaks are expensive , but they are excellent.

Dunno if your (COFlyerCLE) hotel plans are already set, but I can definitely recommend that W. Great rooms.

They are. I got a great deal with the Points + Cash thing - it was $90/night and 4600 points. Not a bad deal.

I've heard great things about this W, so we are looking forward to it.

If that is a standard of civilization, it is a bar low enough to trip over - LIT has a Flying Saucer. :D

Here are some pics from my stay there last October. I got a Kool Korner room, which is Junior-Suite Sized, and had a huge balcony overlooking the Basketball/Hockey Arena. Sorry for the blurry pics. We were a bit drunk by the time I shot the photos, and night-shot mode on my digicam requires a steady hand...

I don't need any bars to trip over after visiting the Saucer. I can trip well-enough after such a visit without assistance. :D

Yes, but you're in Texas, so you have to have steak one night and TexMex the next ;)

Ft. Worth is, in my opinion, much nicer than Dallas. I commuted from the Las Colinas area to Ft. Worth everyday to consult with a large "imports" place that was HQed there. I thought the city was much more peaceful, slower paced, and more enjoyable.

Good luck! I have often had affection for the notion of working for an airline. As an airplane geek, it would probably be great. However, as far as any IT jobs I've seen them advertise for, it would also be a 50% pay cut for me, and that pretty much kills the deal.

Wish me luck. Unfortunately, if I get the job, I will take a pay cut. Fortunately, the cost of living in Houston is reasonable, so I could handle the pay cut. I already have a place to live (my gf's place) about a mile from CO HQs in Midtown. :) I could walk or bike to work - no $$$ spent on gasoline. The worst part would be not earning miles on CO anymore and no more EUAs. ;)

I like Ft. Worth as well. Definitely worth a trip over there one day. There's also some good steak places in Ft. Worth, although I can't really recommend any in particular. I'm not usually one to order steak (with the exception of random places in podunk Ohio :p). Edited to add: I did just think of one Ft. Worth restaurant worth looking into. I've never been to the Ft. Worth location, but there is a location of Reata there in Downtown. The other, and original, location is down in Alpine, where I've spent a lot of time in the last year for work. It's quite good. I've had a steak there, as well as the chicken fried steak, barbecue shrimp enchiladas, and the chile rellenos and all have been excellent, if not outstanding. And if you go, you absolutely must save room for their signature dessert, the white chocolate bread pudding tamale.

I also second Hartmann's suggestion of TexMex. Dallas doesn't have quite the plethora of great choices for that cuisine that Houston and San Antonio do, but there are some good choices. And how can you visit Texas without gorging on chips and salsa, enchiladas, tacos, fajitas, and margaritas at least once?
