Hmm... Belize, Mexico City, or maybe something else? I'm trying to find us award tickets to something relatively close, but outside the US, for Labor Day weekend. We'd be flying out of Atlanta on Friday morning and back the following Monday afternoon/evening. Looks like there's decent standard award availability from CO to BZE and MEX that weekend. We've never been to either one, so I'm asking The Box for ideas. Which would be better for a long weekend? Any other ideas for similar destinations to check?

Go to BZE. I got my PADI Dive Certification there, and the snorkeling/SCUBA is absolutely stunning. From BZE it's a short flight to Ambergris Caye, where there are plenty of beach resorts to choose from. Avoid staying in Belize City itself, as it's a total dump.

Haven't been yet, but we're spending our honeymoon on Ambergris Caye at the Victoria House.

We were originally going here: http://www.robertsgrove.com/html/index.html on the remote island but on talking to the management they said the accommodations are definitely more suited to diving and not a honeymoon.

Plus, you get to fly into SPR on Tropic Air ;)

I'd suggest RTB if you can get a flight...fantastic scuba diving, extremely cheap, and a very nice island. much nicer than BZE I think.

Avoid the Best Western Belize City (if that dump still exists) at all costs :D

Seconded. We went there for our honeymoon. Although, Labor Day is in the prime of hurricane season.

The kicker to this is that without permission you may not attach it to any part of the building nor put wiring thru any wall. As a practical matter, that generally restricts such devices to those who possess large picture windows or balconies facing south and who mount the dish on a chair or tripod type support.

I've also seen a bucket permanently devoted to dish duty...fill with poured concrete and an aluminum pole.

Odd. That sounds eerily similar to my yearly Festivus celebration.

A long weekend on the islands (Cayes) off of Belize is a great getaway. ^ Good advice to avoid most BZE hotels. Lots of nice rental houses on Ambergris Caye, usually very affordable. A simple search will produce many good options.

That's what I had until a couple of years ago when I convinced my landlord that drilling 4 holes won't cause a water leak - especially into brick construction.

Yes, but rather than attempt to pin the head of household, the Feat of Strength is keeping your Dish signal viewable in more than about 4mph of wind. Tripod or non-building-mount dishes are kinda like flying US...you know it's gonna suck, just a matter of how much.

I believe the Tenth Anniversary of Seinfeld's final episode falls this week. Where did the time go?

MilesDavis May 12, 2008 2:23 pm

I missed this earlier, but that's where we stayed. It's been 10 years this June. I believe they have a pool now. The outdoor grass huts were fun, but after a few days we wished we had an air conditioned room (for obvious honeymoon reasons :D). The restaurant there had awesome bean dip with chips. It was fun driving the golf carts down the dirt road into town. Enjoy! ^
