Indeed. You're flying out just when the parties really start to get going. :D

Yes. Y/B gets you a seat in F if there's one available.

I had a Y fare that I changed flights on (moved to an earlier flight) and was told that there was not a Y up seat available; however there was an A for $50 more. I wanted to get home, so I paid it. I've seen other cases online where Yups weren't available, but F was still for sale (this was in Nov.) so bought an A fare instead.

Hrmm... just got the email from CO about winter storm heading to NY/NJ tonight/tomorrow.

Wonder what the chances are my flight to LGA will be cx tomorrow... for an interview. Ugghh.

That shouldn't happen:

Full Fare Economy Y and Discount Full Fare Economy B fare classes or Northwest Airlines -26/-27 fare: Allows all Elite members to upgrade at the time of ticketing when a seat is available. If a member is already ticketed and wants to request the upgrade, they can visit Manage Reservations or call their Elite Priority Line and provide their confirmation number.
Source.

The language is unequivocal - "when a seat is available." No mention of certain fare buckets having to be available. Either the agent was wrong, or CO isn't being up front about its Y/B upgrade policies.

Anything interesting to do in CMH?

It's CMH or BTV for a short mileage run. I'm thinking BTV simply for more miles.

I'm thinking what may have occurred in baglady's case was that the Y bucket was not available on the earlier flight. Sometimes CO will zero out Y fares, when it thinks it can actually sell F seats on a flight. If there was no Y fare-bucket to move to on the earlier flight, then A may have been the only option for obtaining an F seat.

ETA - Also, sometimes Y is just completely sold out on the other flight, meaning that the only way to get F is to buy-up (assuming there's an F seat for sale).

In the one case, it could have been the agent; in the other it would have been co.com - either way; I've had two specific cases where Y up wasn't available but A was.

That happened to me last year. The CSR pretty clearly explained that buying a Y seat is buying a coach seat, even if it puts me, immediately, in First. Being that Y was 0'ed out the only way to get my arse on the plane was to actually pony up for the First.

Seeing as our auditors would need an extra pack of Pull-Ups after plotzing themselves if I tried to get reimbursement for a domestic trip in paid First, I opted against it and ended up sitting wherever I was banging my  against the wall.

Multiply any chances of cxl by a factor of 10 if it's an RJ.

It looks like I'm about to have an expense auditing department...

The Significant Otter.

Luckily, it is a 737-700 on the flight out, which is all that really matters. It's a CHQ flight home, so the chances of that going, even on a sunny day... is... well... ;)

I've got one of those too. I'm trying to teach her the standard  exemption that involves paying for convenience. But, this is me who got half the tax refund that she did this year.

That makes complete sense.
