Brrr… my office area at home is freezing this morning! In order to keep from baking upstairs on a cold night, we have to set the downstairs thermostat to about 65°. So now it's cold down here, and with our high ceilings, it's taking forever to warm up.

This is definitely the coldest morning of the winter so far for us. It's about 10°F outside!

My brother, the B6-A320 pilot, is busy re-reading his flight manual, because according to the media, he has the ability to dump fuel. He's just not really sure where THAT is in the manual.

I told him to take one of the reporters with him, they seem to know all about it...

-6 for me. I think my hair froze on the walk in from the parking garage.

It was a balmy -9 this morning when I woke up!!! It has warmed up to -8 now :)

I can't even get the cat off my lap - she's so cold in the house. We usually keep it at 59 during the day when I work at home, but that's just too cold today. And I'm not doing any work either ;)

Yesterday I played cat bed all day while working. He spent almost the entire morning in my lap.

This morning he's keeping warm by running wild around the house.

I hate project managers at clients who never travel trying to dictate what hotel in their city I stay in. I understand the need to control costs, but rather than say "You absolutely will stay in XYZ Hotel and have it direct billed to us," give me a max price you're willing to reimburse and let me stay where I want with the understanding I won't ask you to reimburse anything over that rate. What really irks me even more is that I can get a room at one of my preferred hotel brands for a cheaper rate than the client has negotiated with the nasty Holiday Inn they're wanting me to stay at. To their credit, they also gave me a few other options — but the Holiday Inn is the lesser of those evils. Other choices include a Super 8, Motel 6, Ramada, Howard Johnson Express… Yet I can't stay at the Hilton Garden Inn that's 15 miles away on a rate that's $5.00 cheaper than the stupid Holiday Inn because they don't have a direct billing arrangement with that hotel, and aren't willing to set one up. Same thing applies to the Courtyard by Marriott that's just up the street from the HGI.

So, I'm not going to question the decision, but I am surprised: I woke up this morning to emails letting me know that my upgrades had gone through for both my flights this Sunday. They arrived at roughly 56 hours out. I'm a Silver.

I don't get it. I appreciate it, but I don't get it.

It's because EUA is shut down for the next few days as CO migrates its fare classes to a new code structure. CO Insider has a thread on here explaining what they're doing, and that they would be rather generous with the EUAs in advance of the weekend EUA shutdown.

See the Fare Class change thread. Freakish upgrade behavior is expected this weekend because of the fare bucket migration.

Morning, Box.

I don't know if I buy that. Yes in that they have a job in the media, but they are far, far from mainstream media, and they would not appreciate being called "media".

I have some stories. ;)

At the end of the day I respect what they do and how they get it done. Sometimes it makes them, or me, look like an idiot, but it's all part of the media dance. I supply them with the tools they need to get the job done and they appreciate that. There's a lot of give and take between the media and Corp. Comm.

I watched the whole US thing yesterday from a couple different perspectives. One was from the emergency response side, as there's always something to learn from something like this. I can drill until I'm blue in the face about what to do if a plane falls in our backyard (we do have these drills, we're under the landing path for HPN and once the ATC patterns are shifted, EWR) but until it actually happens, and all the variables are defined, you never really know how it will go.

The other thing I was looking at was US' response from a crisis comm. standpoint. I use scenarios like this in media trainings that I run.

It seems that, in typical US fashion, they executed the plan - kinda/sorta. The fact that their website buckled under the weight of the traffic didn't help matters. Although the overwhelmingly positive messages that are coming out of this certainly are in their favor.

I listened to O+A this morning on the way in and heard some funny lines. They were discussing on whether this was actually a crash or a landing. A guy had a great point - if it didn't involve land, how could it be considered a landing?
The other one that sealed it was "when your baggage claim is the Fulton Fish Market -- that's a crash."

The more I see reports about what happened, the more impressed I am with the skill of the pilot. Not only did he accomplish a successful ditch, but avoided a number of other tragic possibilities.

Check-in has been restricted to the gate. Airport check-in is required.

Did they say anything good? I forgot to turn on the radio.
