Andy, what we have here is a code three. Yep a real situation... Now, can I have my bullet?

I wanted to see if AA was still flying ATRs between LBB and DFW and sure enough they are... May have to make that trip just to add the equipment type.

The seat maps at AA.com are really improved, too bad I probably will only fly them if I have to.

I guess CM got that impression from too much domestic flying in this age of mini-airplanes (Quote Gordon Bethune shortly before he departed from CO: "Nobody ever went broke flying small airplanes full.")

Over the years I have been on EWR 29 in DC-10s and various other heavies both departing and landing. I also have been under a 777 coming in as I drove up the Turnpike. If you think a 737 looks impressive swooping down just over your head, imagine what the heavy looks like. You just know that the roof of your car will not support it when it lands on top of you.

The 29 approach is pretty cool to look at when they come in as if headed for 22, then swing left over the bay, circle right and head for 29. What's even better is when you see a line of aircraft headed for 22 and only some of them do this! The best views of this that I've seen are IMHO from the Turnpike driving south near the Pulaski Skyway.

Corrected I stand and  indeed to a heavy using 29. I just checked the runway lengths again and I can't imagine the pucker factor for crew and pax alike when there's only 6800 feet to work with. Seems kinda SXM-ish.

My girlfriend hates taking the Turnpike. Not because of the traffic or the potholes. But she's afraid we're going to get into an accident driving past EWR as my eyes are anywhere but on the road.

... hey, I need to know how I'm doing when I race the SQ345.

I've caught myself doing this more than I care to admit.

xyzzy, too much time on my hands combined with FlightMemory has led me to realize that you are sharing a ride to the Do with my mother and cruisr. Look for two blondes snorting while they laugh.

+1.

I've also been guilty of trying to race certain aircraft. :D

We'll recognize cruisr :p

I, too, spend more time than I should looking at EWR from the Turnpike -- but I've not tried to race. I know I'll lose

ConciergeMike Jan 9, 2009 9:41 pm

My favorite look at EWR is when the approach is from the south, maybe about a half hour before dusk...the string of nav lights on the Turnpike visual always makes me go :D

"Yes officer, I understand. But, you see, this jerk in an RJ was trying to... yes... an RJ... you know, one of those lawn dart lookin' aircraft... so, yeah... anyway... I was trying to..."

ConciergeMike Jan 9, 2009 9:44 pm

Oh, random CO shareholder value news: said mother was incorrectly charged $30 for bags on an itinerary ticketed pre-fees. Result? a $50 cert. I'm only cranky over it because it was me that didn't get the cert.

So, where are all the NorthWelta defectors? I imagine we'll be seeing quite a few coming our way in the next few weeks, as it fully sinks in that their airline has tossed them under the bus. January is an excellent time for telling naughty airlines to stick it.

Lots of US folk felt that way, as well. If DL keeps it up, I'm pretty sure there will be some significant attrition

Since I have defected from three airlines' top tier in the past five years, I can attest to the fact that DL is now close on the heels of CO vis-a-vis customer (I'm the customer) satisfaction. The NW people, who are currently POed about losing WorldPerks and thrown into SkyMiles due to the apparently ridiculously high redemption rates will end up being more or less satisfied as soon as DL throws its regularly scheduled tons of bonus miles at them.

Aside from that, due to the massive reach that the system now has and the very high rate of upgrades for top tier flyers, very few of them will be going elsewhere. I would guess that a Platinum on NW gets upgraded three or four times for every once a Plat gets the UG on CO. And DL is probably at least twice as good as CO in that respect.

However, as a defector from US, I can vouch that since that takeover by HP, the amenities, comfort, service, and miles earnings have gone into the toilet. The only things left are the lovely CP Angels and the 100% domestic upgrades into seats that HP has diminished in comfort by reducing pitch to the lowest among the six (check that, five) big domestic carriers. My flight on that airline last week has led me to vow "no mas." It is the end of an affair.

On a clear night from high elevations around me I can see the planes stacked up to go into both LGA and EWR. Very impressive.

I first noticed this on 9/11 a few years back when I was looking at the towers of light. :(

But sadly, I don't think US is going anywhere. They're pretty much down to captive business travel and the residents of the hubs who feel that there's no other choice and/or are unwilling to connect or research their options...but that and Barclays buying miles seems to be enough. I've gone from being a hopeful doomsayer to realizing that apathy is keeping them alive.
