Dude, I was doing research for one of my profs in undergrad. I was the master of the card and microfilm! Ugghhh, if I could count the hours spent in the basement of the library!

Except that according to what I have seen in the press lately, Key is on the verge of having to be bought out.

I had a Key account in college and ended up dropping them because they weren't really present in the NYC area. They just bought a regional bank though and have upped their presence.

I forgot about them, and might need to look into that.

Thanks.

BoA seems to be the logical choice but their fee schedule is ridiculous. It's almost USAirways esque. I think if you sneeze within 500 ft. of a BoA branch or ATM they ding you $10.

I had a Wells Fargo line of credit when I bought furniture upon graduating from college, because I got 20% off the order. I paid it off in full as soon as I received the bill and after receiving a 0 balance statement I thought the account would be closed. It wasn't.

I ran a credit report many moons later and found all of these late charges and delinquency notes from WF. I called them up and they said that my account had reached a 0 balance but I never closed it, so they kept it open "for my convenience." Yadda yadda yadda, they assessed some sort of "account maintenance" fee, but because I moved I never received the invoice so I never paid / challenged it. They never bothered to track me down, instead they kept putting late fees on it.

After about 3 months of fighting with them they dropped all the fees and admitted that they screwed up. It took another year to get them to reverse the damage they did to my credit history.

I'll never even use one of their ATMs. Scum of the earth.

And, from what I hear, their shenanigans are partly to blame for the sub-prime mess.

In my opinion, the entire banking industry is full of weasels. A well run bank should be able to operate as a sound business based on making sound loans and sound investments. Why banks feel compelled to play games with customers is beyond me.

I'm sure there will be several people reading this post that work in the banking industry and, although I never like to see anyone get laid off, a part of me is happy the banking industry is crumbling. Banks are a victim of their own greed. It's unfortunate they're crippling the rest of us though.

Moral of the story: screwing your customers is not a sustainable business model. Whether you're a bank, airline, or anything else.

Heh. We had teh intertoobz by the time I was in undergrad. The web was still fairly primitive in '98, though, compared to what we have today. Amazing how much it has grown in just a decade.

NO - there are 2! :D

I tried moving over to HSBC but I can't deal with them. Their website sucks, their customer service is abysmal and apparently their whole back-end infrastructure is saddled by its own over-complexity. I feel like I'm dealing with the government every time I interact with them.

I would suggust USAA. They dont have branches but don't charge for ATM withdrawals and they rebate 10 non-USAA ATM withdrawal fees a month. You can deposit checks via the internet and they are accepted for that days deposits up too 9 pm I believe. If you use the CC for purchases you get a return of .5% on all charges.

Also if you have other bank accounts you can easily link them to the USAA one and move money around easily and instantly into USAA typical. Here is the website link too: https://www.usaa.com/inet/ent_utils/..._bank_checking Also they do free online bill pay.

I will mention that you may want to call and see what services you have access to as some of the above use to have restrictions if you were not an insurance customer as well. If you have any questions let me know.

I have some horror stories from Huntington and 5/3 as well. So quick to report and oh so painful to correct. I really appreciate the "you are guilty until you prove we were wrong to 5 levels of management" approach they all seem to take.

My father and I don't talk much, but there are benefits to getting together. Like access to some of the most primo planespotting turf ever.

Can non service-members (and their families) qualify for a USAA account? I love USAA, but didn't think anyone could just sign up.
