FAQ

1. Are these cards churnable?
Yes, they are. BUT you’ll have to wait anywhere from 12 to 26 months before applying again. Approvals have happened at the 13 month mark and denials at 24.
There is no set 18 month rule, but always err on the side of caution when churning.
Also- it’s from DATE OF APPROVAL and not from date of cancellation.

2.What are the most current rules in applying for these cards?
#ONLY ONE APPLICATION in a day (make that 30 hours to be safe)
#No more than 2 apps in 65 (approximately) days.
Example:
Day 1 40K personal platinum
Day 2 or later 25-30K personal gold
65+ days later 40K business

While the day limits are a little flexible by a few days either way and YMMV, the rules themselves are not flexible.

3. How long does it take for the Admiral passes to arrive?
For the better part, it takes about 3 months. This is not a set number, and some have received theirs sooner. It's been deduced that the passes are handled by a 3rd party that mails them in batches. Please don’t call Citi for the passes, because you’ll mostly find a CSR who doesn't know better and will give you wrong information.

4. Can I apply for a business card if I don’t have a business?
Technically, you can. But you may be asked for a 4506-T form, or to provide proof of business or/and a copy of a bill with your business name on it. If you don't already have a credit history for the business name you plan to use (meaning this is your first rodeo) then it is recommended you use your name as the business name with no income and 0 as years in business.

5. How do I get the statement credit?
First, you have to make sure if the offer you signed up for gave you A $150 credit or UP TO A $150 statement credit. For the 1st, any AA coded purchase ($50 AA GC seems to be the simplest option here) will/should trigger it. For the 2nd, you’ll have to spend $150 to get the $150 credit.
For more information on what will work and what won’t, please see here (thanks sdsearch) and here (thanks dogbyte)

6. Does the $150 account credit (for AA purchases using the VISA or AMEX) count against the spending required to receive the initial mileage bonus?
No. It does not. (Put differently: any account credit you receive has no impact on your spending total for purposes of earning the "X thousand miles for $Y spent in the first Z months" bonus.)

7. Can I buy Visa gift cards to meet my minimum spend?
There’s a very good chance that it’ll be coded as a cash advance.
It’s recommended to call citi and have them set your Cash Advance limit to zero. (thanks KennyBSAT)

8. Do I get 10% back when redeeming miles for awards?
It depends. First, the rebate program (which began in April 2012) applies only to holders of these cards:
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage Visa Signature
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World Elite MasterCard
  • Citi Select AAdvantage American Express
It does not apply if you hold only the Citi Gold World MasterCard.

Also, the maximum rebate for any cardholder in a single calendar year is 10,000 miles. Having more than one qualifying Citi AA card will not allow you to receive a larger rebate; the restriction applies per AAdvantage account.

9. At what locations are my one day Club passes valid?
All valid locations are listed here.

Hi, I have a quick question about these cards. Most people say that you have to wait around 20 months before reapplying for another 50k miles but the time seems to vary from person to person. What happens if you apply too early? Do you just get denied for the credit card or do you get the credit card but without the 50k offer attached? And does an early try reset the clock and make you wait another year?

And with the business card there is no 20 month wait limit but most people wait around 6 months before applying again?

Thanks!!

Citi denies you. Chase will at times issue a card but give no bonus.

I have seen people miss at say 20 months, then try and succeed a few months later.

Any reason why Citi would pull my credit twice? I applied for the Amex version, didn't get instant approval, chat window popped up, was approved after confirming my address. Today I get an alert, and Citi pulled my Experian twice. I assume this is not normal?

In other news, I applied for two other cards the same day, both pulled Experian. Is it still true that these only "count" as one pull, or whatever?

They always pull it twice if you apply for two cards. After the fact, Experian will combine the two pulls if they occur on the same day and are from the exact same entity.

If you only applied for one card, they do not usually pull the credit twice but, again, if it's the exact same entity the pulls will be combined.

Only the exact same entity. So if it were two AA cards, yes. If it were two Hilton cards, yes. If it were one AA and one Hilton, probably not, because they are processed in different departments at Citi.

And very infrequently, something will happen where the "entity" doesn't look exactly the same. Happy was getting separate pulls for a while because there was a typo in Citi's address occasionally.

my understanding from other threads (many have asked this question) was that citi has a combined limit of two card approvals every 60 days.

you become eligible to have new personal cards approved 60-65 days after your last personal card approval.

you become eligible to be approved for a new business card 90-95 days after your last business card approval.

Applications, not just approvals. It's an important distinction.

Denied for the Citi Biz card on the basis of having previously had this card. I did not receive instant approval, but later received the denial letter in the mail. As I previously did have a Citi Biz card, I didn't feel like I had any options for reconsideration, so I didn't even bother to call reconsideration line. My previous Citi Biz card was opened well over a year ago and was closed about 6 weeks prior to this app. Has anyone else run into this?

Thanks for the response. I only applied for one card.

Companion Certificate Expiring in Nov 12?

Hi all,

I looked around this thread and others to see if my question had been asked prior, and if it has, I couldn't find it.

I just received my 2 Citi AA cards last month and just received the companion certificates. However, they have an expiration of November 30th, 2012. I would love to use these, but I have no air travel planned until December, and then again in March and April 2013.

Has anyone had any success in getting these certificates extended, or receiving new ones?

They always pull Experian for me but it depends on where you live. Credit Boards has a database that is updated by users.

Interesting data point: applied for both Citi Visa and AMEX in late Aug, none got instant approval, both requesting verification of new address, sent in utilities bill copy, then AMEX got approved while Visa got denied saying could not verify address and phone number. Is there a phone number I should call to reconsider? Remember the recon phone number was posted before, but could not find it by searching. Thanks!
