FAQ

1. Are these cards churnable?
Yes, they are. BUT you’ll have to wait anywhere from 12 to 26 months before applying again. Approvals have happened at the 13 month mark and denials at 24.
There is no set 18 month rule, but always err on the side of caution when churning.
Also- it’s from DATE OF APPROVAL and not from date of cancellation.

2.What are the most current rules in applying for these cards?
#ONLY ONE APPLICATION in a day (make that 30 hours to be safe)
#No more than 2 apps in 65 (approximately) days.
Example:
Day 1 40K personal platinum
Day 2 or later 25-30K personal gold
65+ days later 40K business

While the day limits are a little flexible by a few days either way and YMMV, the rules themselves are not flexible.

3. How long does it take for the Admiral passes to arrive?
For the better part, it takes about 3 months. This is not a set number, and some have received theirs sooner. It's been deduced that the passes are handled by a 3rd party that mails them in batches. Please don’t call Citi for the passes, because you’ll mostly find a CSR who doesn't know better and will give you wrong information.

4. Can I apply for a business card if I don’t have a business?
Technically, you can. But you may be asked for a 4506-T form, or to provide proof of business or/and a copy of a bill with your business name on it. If you don't already have a credit history for the business name you plan to use (meaning this is your first rodeo) then it is recommended you use your name as the business name with no income and 0 as years in business.

5. How do I get the statement credit?
First, you have to make sure if the offer you signed up for gave you A $150 credit or UP TO A $150 statement credit. For the 1st, any AA coded purchase ($50 AA GC seems to be the simplest option here) will/should trigger it. For the 2nd, you’ll have to spend $150 to get the $150 credit.
For more information on what will work and what won’t, please see here (thanks sdsearch) and here (thanks dogbyte)

6. Does the $150 account credit (for AA purchases using the VISA or AMEX) count against the spending required to receive the initial mileage bonus?
No. It does not. (Put differently: any account credit you receive has no impact on your spending total for purposes of earning the "X thousand miles for $Y spent in the first Z months" bonus.)

7. Can I buy Visa gift cards to meet my minimum spend?
There’s a very good chance that it’ll be coded as a cash advance.
It’s recommended to call citi and have them set your Cash Advance limit to zero. (thanks KennyBSAT)

8. Do I get 10% back when redeeming miles for awards?
It depends. First, the rebate program (which began in April 2012) applies only to holders of these cards:
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage Visa Signature
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World Elite MasterCard
  • Citi Select AAdvantage American Express
It does not apply if you hold only the Citi Gold World MasterCard.

Also, the maximum rebate for any cardholder in a single calendar year is 10,000 miles. Having more than one qualifying Citi AA card will not allow you to receive a larger rebate; the restriction applies per AAdvantage account.

9. At what locations are my one day Club passes valid?
All valid locations are listed here.

My wife still had a visa (from 2010 75k signup) and applied for another visa and amex....we recently moved and they couldnt verify some info on her app (even though my apps were approved with our new address, with no problem) so I had to write letters, submit enough information to get a mortgage, and prove her identity, address, and income....they still denied her....I refused to give up, and after writing to the executive reconsideration department and getting a actual thinking person to look at her documentation they agreed to reconsider, but would have to run another credit check because this whole process took over 30 days and they needed a fresh look...a few days later she was finally approved.
during the reconsideration process they sent her a replacement for her old visa, we cancelled it with no problems.

Citi is so bassackwards...they approve me no questions asked (and I'm currently unemployed) and put her under the microscope. She was recently transferred to DFW and got a big raise with a company she has been with 20+ years, we bought a new house, sold our old one, have no debt, and all 3 of her FICO scores are 800+
If we didnt live in an AA hub city, I wouldn't deal with Citi's retarded company at all.
For your application, Citi sent a replacement card after you applied. If they had send you the replacement card 12 mo before you applied -- then I wonder if that would reset the 18 -- 24 Mo clock?

For your wife, she also received a replacement card after she applied. Again if she had gotton a replacement card before she applied, would Citi see the "recently activated -- new card" and deny her based on the "not a first time card member" reason we see posted here all the time?

I'm answering this way just to clarify the point I'm trying to make about resetting the 18 -- 24 Mo clock -- or not, since we don't really know.
Also I'm sypathetic with anyone who tries to prove that their old Citi card is really cancelled. Even when Citi sends a letter saying your business card is cancelled, it doesn't list Authorised User accounts seperately or state the date that the different cards or master account were actually closed.

Nope. My wife and I each got only 10K Miles back this year but that's the limit. I had multiple personal accounts that would count for this promotion. We received 4 seperate letters in early Apr '12 detailing terms of the promotion due to 4 applicable Citi Cards we have.

I meant to say that the only remotely possible way to have multiple 10K rebate back could be if you have different AA accounts that are tied to different AA credit cards. So anyone can disprove that?

I have never gotten a reference number from any Citi App and calling in has never been a problem. Granted, on the Citi AA Personal apps my wife and I did we were instantly approved, so I only really know about calling on the AA Business and Citi HHonors accounts.

The one that was under #4 that was recently killed? Just trying to determine why they would say the offer no longer exists.

Question for you...

I applied and got approved for both using the same blind links as you. When I called to double-check bonuses, only one said I'd get a $100 credit on ANY spend, whereas the other was a $ for $ match. Curious as to how we could use the same links and get different results.

-Sept 7th '12: Received email confirmation for Visa (but nothing for AMEX)
-Sept 10th '12: Received 2 separate confirmation letters in mail for Visa and AMEX
-Sept 10th '12: Also received both cards in mail (never got AMEX email confirmation) (that was 4 separate envelopes I received today)
-Sept 10th '12: Activated both cards today; it was an automated system that hung up on me after activation. I then called customer service on back of card and confirmed the 50,000 bonus by spending $3K by January 5th 2013; a $100 statement credit upon first AA direct purchase; free checked bag for up to 4 people in my reservation; and priority boarding

-Other Citi cards I have: Two Citi Dividend Platinum Selects ($10K and $6K limits) and a Citi ThankYou Preferred ($10K limit). I last applied for a Citi card in November 2011 (for Citi ThankYou preferred, a targeted offer with 60,000 bonus points and double points for one year). I also have Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards, Chase Freedom, Sapphire, US Bank Cash+, BoA cards, AMEX Blue Sky, etc, etc.

Thanks for everyone's data points and tips here.

Was working with a friend today who didn't think she could meet $3000 x 2 minimum spend. So she signed up for a Visa using the link in post 1 and a 40k MC that I found.

Don't think I've seen it mentioned here. It's 40k after $1000 spend in 4 months, plus companion cert.

I think some of the discrepancies may be due to people misheard or remembered incorrectly what the exact terms are, as they are almost the same. I am one of them. So therefore, I am going to write Citi an email and ask, so that the response is clear cut in writing, then call to verify what is written to me.

That is the one we designed to back in March. That worked well for us as right after getting the card we had international trips that the AA cards were not worth it to use aboard due to the forex fee. So we had just a bit over a month to finish the spend, so $1K was much easier. We also like to have a MC versus an AMEX.

The companion cert likely would come with either June or Nov expiration date. Ours in March got the cert in Mid May with June 30 exp date which is the date to COMPLETE travel.

There are black out dates in Nov holiday weeks.

Adding a data point to this thread. Thank you to the FT community for providing such awesome knowledge. I used the two browser trick and applied for both the personal Visa and Amex cards on Sept 1. I didn't get instant approval (I'm thinking because I didn't want to supply my cell phone #), so I called in for the Visa card about a day later, and waited about a week and online-chatted with the Amex person. I was approved for both cards, received the Visa one about a week ago and the Amex today. I just called to activate the Amex card and asked about the bonus offer that was attached to the card, and the rep confirmed that it was a 50k bonus with $3k spend in 4 months. I didn't ask when I activated the Visa card, but I am hoping the same bonus was attached (don't know why I was too chicken to ask!) Hopefully this helps anyone who is still interested in applying but isn't sure if the offer is still alive or not.

Extending Date of Companion Cert

I called last week and the operator told me as soon as I asked the question that it's extended to April, 2013. She said there would be no problem booking the trip anytime before April. It was unclear whether the travel had to be completed by April, or just booked by then. She said that they werent putting it in writing, but that all the agents knew about the extension. Seemed weird to me, but she was emphatic and seemed to know what she was talking about.

Cert is always by travel completion date.

It is good that the cert is extended to Apr 30. Citi probably does not want to order another stack of certs and just send out existing certs but came to agreement with AA to extend a series of numbers to Apr 30.

A friend got his cert dd 11/30 a month or so ago. When he called about extension, he was told his cert (by the Star File) has already been extended. Otherwise it would be 06/30.

The Star File if it is N*/CBDOMUJ11 is extended to Nov 30.
Blackout dates are 11/16-21, and 11/24-26.
Travel MUST COMPLETE by 11/30. That means your return date must be 11/30 the latest.
Phone booking fee is waived - so this is good news.
The bad news are:
1) must be purchased 14 days in advance.
2) must mail in the cert to get ticketed - it takes 2 weeks to ticket.

Those got Apr 30 2013 date must have a different Star File.

So the Star File you mentioned is extended to November 30, 2013 automatically ? That extends it for one year from the Nov 30th, 2012 date written on the certificate, right?

Does getting a credit increase on an AA amex re-set the clock for the two year timeframe before applying again?

Last December I got an e-mail offering me a free amex card with $25,000 miles as long as I kept another one of my city cards open and shared the credit line. I foolishly accepted and hence have to wait two years from Dec 2011 to apply for another pair of AA's which I would have been able to apply for had I not taken this offer.

Now they have offered to raise my credit limit on the card. I will refuse if it will reset the clock. I hardly use the card and took it because it was free.

Appreciate some advise,
Felicity
