FAQ

1. Are these cards churnable?
Yes, they are. BUT you’ll have to wait anywhere from 12 to 26 months before applying again. Approvals have happened at the 13 month mark and denials at 24.
There is no set 18 month rule, but always err on the side of caution when churning.
Also- it’s from DATE OF APPROVAL and not from date of cancellation.

2.What are the most current rules in applying for these cards?
#ONLY ONE APPLICATION in a day (make that 30 hours to be safe)
#No more than 2 apps in 65 (approximately) days.
Example:
Day 1 40K personal platinum
Day 2 or later 25-30K personal gold
65+ days later 40K business

While the day limits are a little flexible by a few days either way and YMMV, the rules themselves are not flexible.

3. How long does it take for the Admiral passes to arrive?
For the better part, it takes about 3 months. This is not a set number, and some have received theirs sooner. It's been deduced that the passes are handled by a 3rd party that mails them in batches. Please don’t call Citi for the passes, because you’ll mostly find a CSR who doesn't know better and will give you wrong information.

4. Can I apply for a business card if I don’t have a business?
Technically, you can. But you may be asked for a 4506-T form, or to provide proof of business or/and a copy of a bill with your business name on it. If you don't already have a credit history for the business name you plan to use (meaning this is your first rodeo) then it is recommended you use your name as the business name with no income and 0 as years in business.

5. How do I get the statement credit?
First, you have to make sure if the offer you signed up for gave you A $150 credit or UP TO A $150 statement credit. For the 1st, any AA coded purchase ($50 AA GC seems to be the simplest option here) will/should trigger it. For the 2nd, you’ll have to spend $150 to get the $150 credit.
For more information on what will work and what won’t, please see here (thanks sdsearch) and here (thanks dogbyte)

6. Does the $150 account credit (for AA purchases using the VISA or AMEX) count against the spending required to receive the initial mileage bonus?
No. It does not. (Put differently: any account credit you receive has no impact on your spending total for purposes of earning the "X thousand miles for $Y spent in the first Z months" bonus.)

7. Can I buy Visa gift cards to meet my minimum spend?
There’s a very good chance that it’ll be coded as a cash advance.
It’s recommended to call citi and have them set your Cash Advance limit to zero. (thanks KennyBSAT)

8. Do I get 10% back when redeeming miles for awards?
It depends. First, the rebate program (which began in April 2012) applies only to holders of these cards:
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage Visa Signature
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard
  • Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World Elite MasterCard
  • Citi Select AAdvantage American Express
It does not apply if you hold only the Citi Gold World MasterCard.

Also, the maximum rebate for any cardholder in a single calendar year is 10,000 miles. Having more than one qualifying Citi AA card will not allow you to receive a larger rebate; the restriction applies per AAdvantage account.

9. At what locations are my one day Club passes valid?
All valid locations are listed here.

If I have to talk/chat to reconsideration line, do they move credit from the existing card to the new card(s)?

Thanks!

Don't cancel the existing card first. It could actually hurt your credit score. If you need to, Citibank can move part of that existing credit line to the new cards. But it may not even be an issue.

Okay, I thought they may have been on to me w/ the 2-browser trick or something. Guess not. Got approved this morning for both cards!

Data Point: used links for AMEX and VISA on two different browsers. Had to go through chat windows for both before approval- it seemed that they wanted permission to use my cell phone number to call me for any future suspected fraudulent activity.

They confirmed the 50k bonus offer without my asking. I did not ask about the companion tickets because I don't want them anyways.

This is exactly what happened to me. Had to do the chat windows and they verified my phone numbers. Then it went off for further processing and I was approved the next day for both.

Did you find out whether you were approved immediately?

<<$100 statement credit for the first eligible AA purchase made within 12 months >>

What is eligible AA purchase ? If I book a ticket using miles and pay taxes with my Citi AA card, will this qualify? Will any purchase qualify? Where can I read more about this.
Thank you!

Is there any drawbacks to downgrading to bronze? Figured its no annual fees, keep my credit line. Does anyone knw if this bronze card will not alow me o churn in two years? It'll alo allow me to spnd a few bucks once in a while to renew my points.

Downgrading to bronze or canceling altogether shouldn't affect your ability to churn. In fact, you can re-apply for another AA card while you still have an active, identical card in your wallet. Looks like you just need to wait 18 months or so from the time of your last application before applying again.

Any purchase billed to AA, yes. Any purchase of something AA billed to someone else (including points.com), no.

Please read post 1987 for more info.

More generally, new arrivals, before posting a question in any long-running FT thread, you really should do at least two things:
  1. Read the first page (by default, 20 posts). Post #1 is often updated regularly to reflect the latest developments.
  2. Read the last 60-80 posts (normally, 3-4 pages). Certain recurring questions -- including yours, in all likelihood -- will be answered there. Don't clutter the thread by repeating a question that has just been answered in the last few days. And to be blunt, people will be less inclined to help you if you act like a lazy freeloader.
Following these tips will get you a faster and, if your question requires an individual response, more polite and welcoming answer.

How exact is the 90 days

I have read that the 65 days to wait after personal to apply for biz is inexact... in that the start of the count can be +/- a few days. Does the same apply for 90 days between Citi apps? I applied last on June 6th and am wondering if I can pull the trigger on Sep 5 (91 days) or if I should wait an extra couple of days (in which case I would wait until Sep 10th to avoid doing all my apps on a Friday)

I couldn't find a similar situation when searching the thread so I apologize if this has already been answered...

I signed up for the citiBiz offer that included 50k miles, 2 lounge passes, & $150 credit (fly7 offer?) awhile ago. Recently, I purchased a $7 drink onboard a AA flight and it showed up correctly on the statement as a AA purchase. However, I never saw the credit so I sent a secure message and they responded saying:

"We received your recent inquiry regarding a $150.00 statement credit and we will be happy to try and assist you today.

On 1/XX/12 your account was enrolled in an offer to earn a $150.00 statement credit after your first ticket purchase with American Airlines within 12 months. You have until 1/31/13 to meet your threshold.

We are unable to locate the charge for a ticket purchase...."

This message was obviously shortened up, but the important part is bolded & underlined. Was this ever an offer requirement? I don't have a screenshot of the offer anymore so I don't have proof, but I thought all of the statement credits were triggered by ANY purchase on AA.
