If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

RNE, suggesting that shutdowns are why one should always have credit cards from at least three banks.
Very good advice here (as well as in your signature).

You don't leave for a few weeks, that should be more than enough time to get a new card from another financial institution. Barclay's Aviator card does not charge FX fees. But get the story from the shut down department before you decide whether to get another card.

I have an Amex Plat and a barclaycard (barclaycard only has 1000 limit and has never been used)

I recently applied for the new marriott card and the hyatt card, both declined which was a bit surprising as although my fico score isnt amazing its a bit above 700 (I have carried a balance on the card at times, although my overall credit usage is down to about 20% at the moment)
That was what triggered it. The 2 new cards did you in. Low end of FICO and history of carrying outstanding balances added to the flags generated by the system.

If you can get a human being at Chase Lending Dept you may have a chance for them to reverse the shut down which is most likely is triggered by system without any human even reviews the shut down but with the low FICO and the high end cards, in the current risk adverse model Chase is actively used, it might be an uphill battle.

You may need to get a card from another bank so your trip would not be affected, since your Barclay's card has too low a limit for the trip purpose and AMEX is NOT accepted at many smaller shops, incl many restaurants and local lodgings.

Trip or no trip, everyone should have credit cards from at least three or four issuers in case of shutdown, loss of card, fraud, etc. Cards with no annual fee are easy to find and easy to keep open.

Not so sure about that. 700+ FICO and carrying a balance (currently below 20%) would not ordinarily trigger a shutdown, even with recent new credit applications. If you carried high balances for a while, and credit score dropped below 650, it might get you a review. But carrying a balance makes you a profitable customer. If Chase shut all those customers down, they wouldn't make any money.

I'm guessing there are other factors at play here.

not that part part but the two declined apps in a row in addition to it make it a possible reason for the algorithm to kick in.

Knowing when all of the cards were obtained would shed some light as well.

Without casting any aspersions on the OP, a vague "700+ FICO" could be 701 (not good) and a vague "Below 20%" could be 19.9% (not good). Both conditions could prompt a review, particularly the latter. While, yes, credit card issuers like people who carry a balance, they don't like overextended borrowers. A ratio near 20% is pretty extended.

RNE, opining that good people with the best of intentions can nevertheless get into a fix and be unable to pay their bills. Banks still remember all the 2008 bankruptcies by people who had stellar credit scores.

There's no way that 20% utilization is considered "pretty extended" by banks unless the person has at least double or triple their income in available credit.

Utilization is a factor in calculating FICO scores, but card delinquencies are increasing and Chase is probably testing an algorithm that looks at other factors to predict default.

It could be a simple test: customer who carries a balance tries to open more than one new line of credit. The algorithm isn't looking at rewards, only at borrowing.

I wanted to add this data point for people who may be in my position.

I was interested in applying for the Chase BA card to get the 75,000 point bonus upon spending $10,000 (I probably won't go for the full 100,000 points).

I was worried about triggering a shut down though. I've had the BA card at least twice before. Maybe three times. I cancel before renewal, wait until 24 months after receiving the bonus, and then I apply again.

I have the Chase Hyatt card, I spend nothing on it each year, just the $75 fee to get the free night certificate.

I also have the legacy IHG select card and two months ago, I was approved for the IHG Premier card.

I also have a Chase Ink business credit card, I only spend $200 a month on it for my cell phone/cable bill to get the 5X points.

So I had three active personal cards and a business card. My online card management portfolio showed a total of 19 Chase cards, so 15 of them had been canceled (churning). 3+ years ago when I had the Chase Sapphire I used it as my primary card, but these days I only out minimum spend or bonused spend on the Chase cards.

Credit score is good, around 800 I think. I have about five other cards from other issuers. I pay off all my cards every month and when I get a new card I almost always call to have the credit limit lowered to $10,000.

Anyway, I was worried about denial and shut down when I applied for this Chase BA card. My online application got the "pending, we'll let you know" message. I was worried that if any human being looked at my history with Chase they would see churning and someone playing the minimum/bonused spend game.

Three days after I applied I saw the newly approved Chase BA card in my online portfolio with an $18,000+ credit line.

How long ago did you apply for the BA card? Shutdowns typically occur after an approval, not during the approval process.

I have to say: If Chase shut you down, I wouldn't blame them. I can't believe banks let customers abuse them to the tune of 19 cards opened and 15 cards closed.

Just the fact that you are approved doesn't imply they won't shut you down. They approved my application and them a week or so later I was shut down (later reversed). Not that it implies you will be shut down either.
As long as banks allow (and even encourage) churning people will use this option (there is no misuse if you make sure of an option someone else freely grants you) ... the rules are getting stricter and less churnable but it is still possible to do so.
