Not necessarily. This could just be a side effect of cacheing.

Basically, the airlines have learned expensive lesson that showing true availibility for redemption bookings is costly, because of the very large numbers of searches people do. True availability requires a call back to the revenue management system, taking into account POS/POC/frequent flyer tier/ currency/ current demand/ supply balance etc etc

So rather than show each other the true availability on search, you use a cache, and only update the cache when required. But there is then a risk that the cache and reality are out of sync, and when pax actually makes booking, so sorry, not available.

The way to reduce this risk is to be conservative on what the cache shows. So even if CX has 6 seats, you tell your partners you only have 1. And you only need to update the cache when you go to 0, (or more seats opened up) rather than updating the cache from 6 to 4 back up to 5 etc.

For that case the cache was off for 48 hours, until CX withdrew the ~12 seats from redemption on Friday 26/8

That was suggested to me privately. This is known behaviour for JL Domestic (which only ever shows 4 seats) or LAN domestic (7 seats).

Since there's no way for me to test the theory cost free (well, short of booking BAEC and then cancelling within 24 hours) I didn't really try.

But it'd be horrible for planning purposes if CX is really drip-feeding availablity to its partners - are we all going to have to "test" CX availability on BAEC and cancelling if we get it wrong?

Seems like some temporary glitch, BAEC shows CX562 2Y and CX594 7Y now. Which accords w AM.

stupid question, but how do you know they've cleared your waitlist. Do they call? Text? Email? Do you keep watching BA for award space and call back? Curious as to the earliest they've ever cleared your waitlist.

I usually receive an email saying there's been a change in my booking. Then when I log into my MP account it's confirmed, then call MP to issue the ticket.

Regarding waitlisting on a CX flight as an MPC member:

I made a request for an award booking in J class for my mum a CX return flight from HKG to LHR in December (peak period, I know) back in July, while she was still a basic Green member. She recently re-qualified as a Silver member last week.

Does this upgrade in status affect her chances at nabbing a seat here?

I am of the opinion that the process is automatic with changes to the member tier/status... as I thought the same should happen to a DM being downgraded to GO for example?

Won't be the same PNR - AM call cantre can only redeem it as two redemptions.

So I assume if I want to create a multi leg journey I'd have to call up, wait list and would need the 70% of miles required? As my miles are in amex atm.

Can't lock. You will be forced to issue PE and reissue J if it is subsequently released.

You can waitlist on the Business, probably 30 days at a time. You cannot hold the PE unless you ticket it. USD100.

Little tip I just learned. I had set some waitlist reservations. I just learned that they expire without notification.

So as my target flight is getting close, I took a look and see they they just disappeared. With no notice. :-(

So... worth keeping an eye on that.

Yeah this has been happening since they switched over to Amadeus a few years ago.

Most waitlists have deadlines*. They're given in emails if booked online and in any case will show up in CX MMB:

* exception is when you've already issued a ticket and you're waiting for another flight, same route and same class for rebooking. E.g. my mother has the 8am from Sydney in beginning of Jan and is waiting for 11am and 3pm.
