I see, thanks for clarifying. Does the 0 mean it is sold out or not available (i.e. May possibly be released later)?

Could I trouble you to check CX252, CX238, CX250 and CX256 for 4 March as well? Basically I am keen to leave on any fight that day if possible. Many thanks in advance!

Is there any point calling up as a BA Emerald to see if they can "force through" an upgrade (already waitlisted) from J to F on JFK-YVR and back? Ticketed via BA.

percysmith Feb 9, 2017 6:44 pm

Does non-CX status have any effect on redemptions?

Unfortunately it seems that J is so full throughout the day, so is PEY... Is that peak season for UK->HK traffic? The premium loading is so high.

That's not full - plenty of seats for sale. Just not cheaply. Wonder why...

I scanned the seat maps pretty quickly and they look quite filled up. Which means in reality inventory is even tighter. Does op want to try ex-MAN (J9 C9 D8 I5)?

Nope.
OTOH am surprised to know non-160 stock can be AM upgraded.

I'm still looking at

CX252: 11 empty seats
CX238: 12
CX250: 17
CX256: 11

I've redeemed seats on less empty cabins, but close in

Anyway, is seat map a reliable indicator of redemption clearance possibility? I thought someone said it wasn't.

I think while it may not be 100% reliable, it is a good proxy as most J class bookings come with ASRs. At least you know if most seats are taken then chances are slim.

On HKG-ORD route, I can basically predict when the U seats will start popping up closing to departure depending on number of seats taken on seat map.

ldshaw Mar 5, 2017 7:51 am

am going to Okinawa but waitlisted for economy class I called the MPC but they said they pretty much don't know anything e.g., when the system will release more seats

April 26 KA 378 12:15 15:55
April 28 KA 379 16:55 18:35

This is not even over easter weekend nor labor day weekend

I still see plenty of seats available for sale through cathay website, what are my chances to have this itinerary redeemed?

percysmith Mar 5, 2017 8:13 am

I managed to clear OKA 1-4 May on 20 April last year. Didn't go eventually, it rained.

My apologies if this has been asked before. tried searching.

I have both an F and J ticket on the same flight booked with AA miles on CX.
The flight is not for another 3 months.
I am hoping to upgrade the J to F if another seat opens up. As of now its showing F5 (6 total seats).
The F is booked in my name and the J is booked in my wifes. The plan is to upgrade/downgrade one of them as soon as something opens up in either cabin (preferably both F)

Would it help that i waitlisted on Asia Miles for another F seat and if it clears, just cancel it? How often do those actually clear months out?
The F seat booked is in my name, and the waitlist i created is also in my name as i have no intention of booking it thru CX- hope thats not a problem either.

There are a few potential problems:
* If you cancel your Asia Miles waitlist when it clears, it doesn't mean it will return to the award pool. It may go to another AM waitlist, to a BA award if he/she just happens to see it, or to another AA award, or to..., or even return to revenue pool.
* The Asia Miles waitlist is in your name. If it ever clears, it can only be ticketed in your name.
* I encountered a few cases when AM issued tickets automatically when cleared. They told me at booking. Make sure that is not the case.

thanks for the help!

1) i would be ready to book immediately when cancelling the waitlist should it clear.
2) its in my name, but i dont intend to book with AM anyway.
3) i cant imagine they would ticket it...online it didnt even ask for a CC...they would ticket it without a CC?

That's good. They cannot ticket. Most of my awards were for upgrades and, until 3-4 months ago, there wasn't any additional charge.

If you are just changing the date or flight only (with the same itinerary and class) online, it's 1000 miles per change.

should i buy class r?

Hi guys, I am on.the waitlist to have my PE, R upgrade to biz. My ticket is not issued yet because I 'd like to make sure that the upgrade is confirmed; otherwise i'd buy the PE standard. Does anyone can help to see my.chances or any suggestion on to wait or not to wait. I checked the flight and not many seat assigned in the biz class. My itin is as follows:

apr 7th, mci-lax-hkg. CX 885, So it would be only lax to hkg leg is upgradable.
apr 26th, hkg-ord-mci, cx806

Thanks a lot of the help!!

jacobsleather Mar 12, 2017 6:19 pm

You may have no choice but take a gamble on the R class ticket. If you're diamond you can sometimes get lucky and have them release a revenue ticket for you on the spot. Sometimes they refuse, the upgrade waitlist never clears, you can ask at the airport and get lucky then. And sometimes you loose.

Maybe someone here has an EF subscription and can search the loading for you.

I also judged by seat map (both not bad - <20 taken which normally IME suggests release of U within 2-3 weeks of departure. May be a bit later for Sunday ex-HKG but won't be too worried)

Actually let's revert to something more basic - 4/7 CX885 is currently available as a standard business redemption, so it's very likely to be upgradable.

Not 4/26 CX806 right now, but may be closer in.

Ah, indeed. That's right. But just in case OP has exactly 45k AM then they may not want to do that (one way 27.5k upgrade for now). Out of curiosity, how would the mileage requirement be counted in this scenario with ORD and LAX falling into two separate bands?

percysmith Mar 12, 2017 9:36 pm

Wait for both ways to be available, then lodge upgrade request for 45,000 (mixed class/band redemptions charged at the lower of return or two one-ways (in this case the former))

Thank you guys! So it sounds like I got good chance on both ways (Lax-HKG ; HKG-ORD). I am not diamond but gold and got more than enough miles to have this upgrade both ways. Does it help to increase the chances?

Thanks!

is there any availability from march 25 to april 15 , i notice waitlist and everything seems full from lax to hkg

blum81 Mar 15, 2017 12:15 am

Hi everyone.

I'm wait-listed on CX888 HKG-YVR April 1 but my EF account is showing the following

F1 A1 J8 C7 D4 I1 W2 R1 E0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M0 L1 V0 S0 N0 Q0 O0

When you look at the seat map there's about 9 open seats, and 5 that are marked blocked.

I've never had to wait this long for a confirmation. Anyone have any ideas on whether my booking will clear? Gold priority member, but not sure how much that actually helps.

If I don't get confirmation, i'll have to resort to instant upgrade upon check in. Any thoughts on whether I'd get a bump up? Seems to be a pretty full flight in PE/E

Thanks in advance!

percysmith Mar 15, 2017 12:43 am

For CX889 9 March and CX837 10 March I was made to wait 55 and 67 hours before departure.

I have given up and book BR instead.

Hi Percysmith and all.

Looks like this will be the first time I've never had an upgrade confirmed. My upgrade is about to expire March 28th 6:00pm HK Time. What's the best plan of action after it expires? Keep calling in or just hope at check in I can get an instant upgrade?

If it expires I'll end up letting go of the MNL to HKG upgrade as I really don't care about that one as it's more the longhaul I'm concerened about.

The question I have for everyone is can I do an instant upgrade for MNL to HKG and HKG to YVR from the Manila check in counter? Or can they only do the outgoing sector from Manila?

Just need to figure out whether the MNL counter can upgrade the HKG-YVR sector or if I should be running straight to the Cathay counter when I land.

I had several instances in the past few years where I got my J upgrade cleared within the final 24 to 55 hours. That can happen even with J availability as J3 C3 D1 I0 and somehow when I call in they have U class availability. I am just a lowly SL. This is on HKG-YYZ and YYZ-HKG.

Thanks for the feedback etkuo. I called in earlier this morning and the agent was able to extend my waitlist another day, so it'll expire on the 29th.

Hopefully I get the same luck as you.

Hallo, O learned and experienced Ones.

I seem to be having a lot more trouble confirming redemption upgrades to business and full redemption business seats to LHR over the last few months.

The problem has become acute in the last few weeks in particular when seeking a Thursday or Friday departure ex HKG, even when those are not public or school holiday weekends. It looks like they are simply waitlisting us when before they'd confirm a seat.

Something like 13 years a DM now, I am finding this very frustrating indeed. Logical argument with the agent on the MPC Diamond line, and waiting for them to "ask my supervisor" doesn't seem to bring much joy, either.

Has any other DM so suffered recently? Do you know of a recent tightening of revenue management in this way?

This change in service, whether just me or general, will obviously affect the way I look at DM as a valuable thing to have.....

Can someone please give me an idea if the possibility of getting my award flight is still likely?

13APR CX 315 HKG - MAD (waitlisted for PE)

We're two. One is MPC green, the other has no status and is just part of the other one's redemption group.

Our waitlist is expiring on the 10th, if it doesn't clear before that, will they be able to still extend it? Been waitlisted since June. Thanks so much!
