Reminder: you must enroll and select AA as your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. "Please call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Summary of Reimbursements.

AMEX AA Reimbursement Approved
  • Admirals Club Memberships
  • Admirals Club Passes
  • Admirals Club Food/Drinks
  • Elite Status Buyback
  • External Reservation Fee
  • Five Star Service
  • MCE/Seat Selection
  • Mileage Multipler
  • Monthly Wifi Subscription through AA
  • Same Day Flight Change
  • Upgrades
  • Baggage
AMEX AA Reimbursement NOT Approved
  • Award Cancellation Fee
  • Close-In Ticket Fee
  • Elite Challenges
  • Gift Cards
  • Inexpensive tickets
  • Infant Fees
  • Miles Purchase from AA.com
  • Wifi (per flight)
50/50 on Whether it gets Approved
  • Award Taxes/Fees
  • Change Fee
  • Pet Fee
  • Upfares

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: Elite Status Buyback: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Gift Cards:
  • No
Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Miles Purchase from AA.com: Monthly AA Wifi Subscription Plan: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit. Monthly Wifi subscription plans through AA appear to be eligible for automatic credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

NOT WORKING: Partial payment by gift card or voucher combined with partial payment by Amex doesn't work. Full payment of a ticket under $100 stopped working sometime in 2020.

With no planned flights it looks like if you are not an AA elite the only real option is the $59 Ambassador Club option. Bought a day pass the other day and $59 was charged and then credited a couple of days later. As a non-elite the upgrade voucher option is a no go.

Any experiences with in-fight WiFi purchases on AA?

As noted in Wikipost, the monthly WiFi subscription works. Scroll back to post 306 and read forward a bit.

From what I have read, airline tickets no matter how small, do not work with AA. So only AC passes unless elite, then 500 mile voucher. I could be wrong.

Correct that flight tickets don't work, but Mileage Multiplier purchases work. For myself, I'm an elite with a Citi AA Exec card for Admirals Club membership, so I have no use for AC passes or checked bag fees, and I have a stockpile of 500-mile upgrades I'll never use. The only option for me is to make Mileage Multiplier purchases. What I do is book super-short award itineraries for dates in the future, then once those have ticketed I pull up the itinerary on AA.com and purchase the cheapest MM option. (I book super short award trips because MM seems to be keyed to the flight distance and I want multiple smaller purchase amounts.) I then cancel the award bookings, leaving me with free miles. If I had any other use for the credit I wouldn't consider MM, but free miles is better than nothing.
mia and daninstl like this.

You are right and I wasn’t clear in my post so sorry for the confusion. What I meant by “no planned flights ” was that I can’t use the credit for seat reservations or bag fees because I have no planned flights ….I wasn’t implying someone could use the credit to book a flight. My bad for not being clear!

So AA don't claw back the mileage multiplier after you cancel the award ticket?

Nope. They’re more than happy to part with the miles for the exorbitant price that they charge for mileage multiplier. And that’s not a knock on the strategy of using the Amex fee credits for mileage multiplier - I use my credits for that also.

Wondering the same thing.

Did you try it? Were you able to do the upgrade for mileage + cash and get the cash portion credited back?

I'm in similar situation and considering upgrading through upgrade offer main cabin to first on aa.com website. Did either of you end up pulling the trigger and getting an upgrade reimbursed? Thanks in advance!

However, not 100% sure if it will work because the email that Amex sent me on July 25th doesn't list "upgrade" as a possible incidental fee.
In similar situation. Did you end up doing this and was it reimbursed? Thanks!

I bought mileage multiplier 4 days ago for flights on 12/31 and 1/3 for 2 passengers. They are still showing as pending.
Does AA wait for the flights to be flown before charging the card? Also, does it could as being purchased on the purchase date or the actual date the charge post?
Oddly, the website said the cost was $54 each, but it turns out the total was $106 and change for 2

Yes, admirals club day passes are specifically valid uses of the credit.
