CAUTION: In February 2019, American Airlines changed the coding of gift card transactions. Although there are a few successful data points since, in general, Gift Card purchases are now explicitly identified, and no longer reimbursed by American Express.

Reminder: you must enroll and select your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. http://www.americanexpress.com/airlinechoice -or- "Call the number on the back of your Card to select a qualifying airline."

Data Points on automatically reimbursed incidentals since 2017:

Admirals Club Memberships: Admirals Club Passes: Admirals Club Food/Drinks: Award Cancellation Fee*: Award Taxes/Fees: Baggage*: Change Fee*: Close-In Ticket Fee*: Elite 500-mile Stickers: Elite Challenges: External Reservation Fee: Five Star Service: Infant Fees: MCE/Seat Selection: Mileage Multipler: Pet Fee*: Same Day Flight Change: Upfares: Upgrades:
Wifi is provided by one of three third-party providers and is thus not eligible for the incidental credit.

* For items not automatically reimbursed but which are not excluded by Amex, you can try and request manual reimbursement from American Express; however, you may need to wait 14-28 days first.

Would like to know if any updates to reimbursing for award tickets redeposit/cancellation fee ($150)? The last post about it was back in April 2015... Should I buy the aa.com gift cards and pay for the redeposit/cancellation fee or use my Amex Plat to directly pay for it in order to get the reimbursement benefit for 2017? Thanks.

Gift cards can only be used for airfare, so I don't think buying one to use for the redeposit would work. Not sure if you could use the fee credit, but it is a fee and they're pretty liberal in its application.

i just canceled an award yesterday and used my Platinum card to pay for the $150 fee. I'll let you know if I get reimbursed.

$100 Purchases: need to be on different dates?

Any experiences with buying 2 $100 GCs in separate orders on the same day?

There are many, many reports in this thread of people doing what you describe and seeing the charges reimbursed.

Does this work for a Virtual Gift card?

Also can you use these to upgrade to F at check-in?

so another DP - ordered 2 $100 gift cards, but messed up and did it on the same order which posted to amex as $200 AA MISC SALE. Realized my mistake, and placed another 2 orders for 100 each. The $100 orders got reimbursed , even though they were placed after the $200, so looks like another DP that over $100 will not be reimbursed.
Also - the order posted on dec 30, but the reimbursement happened on jan2, can somebody confirm that will come out of my 2016 credits even though i got credited in 2017?

You can confirm this by checking your 2017 balance.

I known $100 AA GC works, $200 doesn't work. How about $150?

Waited until the very last minute on AA. I purchased 2 - $100 e-giftcards from AA on a personal platinum at 9:45pm CST on Dec 31. It posted on Dec 31 and was reimbursed on January 2.

Don't wait until the last minute, I got lucky because AA was going to start site maintenance at 10:00pm on Dec 31, so if I would have waited longer it may not have processed.

Also I can confirm that I still have $200 in credit until Dec 2017. So I can do this again for 2017.
