As of 9/21:
Flights under 900 miles
Flights over 2,200 miles* / over 4.5 hours
**Some domestic and short-haul international flights will include a fruit and cheese plate instead of tray meal service and will also have snack basket service before landing.
cmd320 notation (unofficial): the 2,200mi + section for F and J is a bit misleading. Domestic flights within the continental US other than premium transcons (JFK-LAX/SFO, MIA-LAX on 77W) do not receive a full meal and instead only see a sandwich/fruit and cheese plate.
fly747first notation (official) MIA LAX on 772 receives full meal and amenities as Flagship Business except for lounge access

I flew the MIA/LAXMIA 77W flights last week with similar meals. I really praise AA given what most of it's competitors are doing. Not lost on me is that many Main Cabin fares would have been non upgradeable BE fares pre COVID. Whomever has Parker's ear on F catering should be applauded.

What's worse is that on the 10 am flights out LAX, lots of times you get breakfast menus and then the crew has to tell you that lunch will be served and some FAs don't make an effort to explain the entree options

Indeed and a prime example of how hypocritical U.S. airlines are... if UA wants to save money, they should fire the VP of Inflight who came up with such a poor idea. No company needs to pay someone six figures for that lousy performance!

Sure, using a preschool kids dole cup instead of fresh fruit saves what, maybe 50 cents a meal, let's call it a dollar and be generous. But then the focus of their meal service becomes disbelieve they would serve canned fruit in a premium cabin instead of being congratulated for being one of the few airlines still serving a hot meal in these trying times.

10/27, LAX-JFK in J. Meal orders taken before departure, pre-meal drink service with pistachios, proactive refills throughout flight, and cookies and mints before landing. Fantastic, friendly crew.
