AA agents have occasionally allowed passengers with booked travel wishing to cancel because of Coronavirus concerns to cancel without fees, but this is not AA official policy. Possible reasons:
Events, meetings, etc. you were to attend have been cancelled due to Coronavirus concerns, so your trip would be in vain.
You have documentable health conditions that your doctor feels are sufficient to cancel travel plans.

As a point of reference, I cancelled a flight and requested a refund on 7/28. This morning I received an email that my refund is complete (went from pending review to issued to card). Email states to allow up to 7 days for funds to be returned to original form of payment, but from my experience it does not take that long.

I wonder why they are only allowing changes for travel up to Sep 30?

I booked a one was flight from MCO-SAN in F back in March for travel in Oct. I have now moved this holiday to 2021 but I can’t do anything with this flight since my travel is after Sep 30, so according it AA it’s business as usual!

I wonder if there is any chance of that date being extended?

The DFW-HND, HND-BKK, BKK-HND, and HND-DFW legs were all JL codeshares.

When Thailand closed their borders, JL cancelled the HND-BKK and BKK-HND flights. The DFW-HND and HND-DFW flights are still there, but Japan has closed their borders as well. AA is now showing my destination as "Bangkok, Japan" (yes, really!), but has not cancelled the trip.

As I read it, there is zero chance that Thailand or Japan will open their borders in time for the trip as planned. What are my options?
Well, THAT was a pleasant surprise!

I just got an unsolicited phone call from American Airlines. (The phone caller ID recognized the number as "AA Booking".) They were calling to ask if I was still planning on going on the trip. I said No, because the borders were closed, and I'd been planning on calling them to cancel and request a refund. She said that was good, because otherwise she'd have had to explain that the borders were closed. She went on to say that she could cancel the trip for me, and give me instructions on exactly how to request the refund.

Which we did.

I'm going to check the AA website later today to verify that it is cancelled, and do the refund request step.

AA just rose a few points in my estimation. They still have a LOOOONG way to go to catch up with JL, but this is a step in the right direction.

Should take 7 business days, not including the day u submit the request, for AA to process.

Hello, I had a round trip ticket for travel on April 1st, non-refundable, to LAS. Vegas started to shut down towards the end of March (shows cancelled, hotel closed down), so I cancelled my ticket as soon as AA announced the change fee waiver. The flights were not cancelled by AA so no refund for me (I tried anyway). I know that I have until the end of 2021 to travel, but do I have to travel on the same routing, or can I use the credit towards a routing to any city? Thank you.

It appears that I spoke too soon.

I checked the "prefunds" site. AA wants a $300 "cancellation fee". I telephoned. The telephone agent claimed it was because the hops from HSV-DFW and DFW-HND were still flying. I tried to explain that my destination was Bangkok, not Japan, and that BOTH Thailand AND Japan had closed their borders. No joy. I'm leaving it as a credit for now, and will call them again, then probably start the letter writing.

Similar situation here. In February, We booked SEA-RSW on October 10, return Oct 17. With that part of FL being a Covid hotspot, we aren't going, but still have no indication that the dates have moved even though we're approaching 60 days out.

Has anyone had any success for dates beyond Sept 30?

Given that AA are continuing to make schedule adjustments I would probably hold off making a decision just now.

In terms of changing the origin and destination, I would say yes but would probably check first. AA's website specifically says that "You're allowed to change your origin and destination cities" but that I don't think that was originally the case when they first issued the waiver. For example, I wasn't able to use a UK - US ticket to subsequently purchase a US - UK one. I had to put it in for a refund which then went back on to my UK credit card and book a brand new ticket.

I am sure someone a little more knowledgeable will be able to comment more definitively.
I'm back. I received 3 emails from AA stating that the 3 PNRs had schedule changes. Two of them were over 60 minutes. Three were booked 31st January and one was booked 1st February 2020. One of them is a minor change and I assume that I will get nothing on that as I will not be in the USA in order to travel. All these are I class. Am I correct in my assumptions.

AA's standard for a refund is a cancellation or change of 4+ hours or "illegal" connection (now specified in the COC to meet DOT rules).

Entirely separate from cancelling for future credit with fee-waived.

Anyone have experience with changing a ticket recently for a trip that had used eVIPs (expiry Jan20)? Correct to assume for this that if C is avail on the new dates, even if into 2021, then the same certs will be used, despite them having ”expired” back in Jan20?

Just what I wanted to read, thanks. I want to confirm the following entire trip is refundable:

I have a SOF-LHR-JFK-LAX-LAS round trip (TP run) in November (booked in March; in I-class mainly). The very first leg SOF-LHR has been moved by exactly 5 hours.. The remainder of the run is all still present and correct (albeit with a 40 min connection at LAX on the way back). But on the basis that the starting leg has moved 5 hours, I can get a refund.

And if so, can I just press the "cancel trip' button and it will all work through in time? I don't want to lose a $300 cancellation fee or anything

I know my alternative would be to re-book the trip for 2021, but I'm not keen on that ...right now. I still want to do the trip but just don't want hassle if we move it with so much uncertainty still around us all (but in particular flying from the UK to the US). I have a US trip still booked in February so hoping that becomes possible.

This is a popular run, I've cancelled one myself

It was early on in the crisis but I had to call, I couldn't do it online -- the website kept threatening to take 300USD or give me a credit for later. The whole call probably lasted less than 5 minutes, and if you call in the morning Europe time then you should get through quickly. After that you get sent to the refunds website which you can do online.

And to finish this off, call made morning UK time, through in 3 minutes, very helpful operator who gave me the prefund address. But they are certainly making it hard work - calling then TWO separate refund applications.
Only oddity was the online version of my AA booking didn't show a cancellation, just a 'we can't find your details, call reservations' message. I was glad that I knew the BA flight was in fact cancelled.
Now to wait....
