Richard Gephardt

Flying into National, Richard Gephardt sat behind me in coach. He was offered a seat in first but declined. Coach was empty.

Two weeks ago, LAX-DFW. Clint Black. He was escorted to his seat in first class late in the boarding process by one of those special services agents. I was a row behind him, and in the middle (767-300). He wore black, with a plain black baseball cap. Late in the flight, he was chattign with the FAs up by the front galley and left side, front door. I walked up the jet brdige behind him when we arrived at DFW. He seemed pretty nice.

At the end we asked him for his autograph. One of the F movies being offered was Twisted, which he was in. So we took the little card that had all the movies listed and asked him to autograph it. He had overhead us tell the FAs that we were on our honeymoon. So on the card he wrote 'Happy Marriage!' Definitely a neat person to be sitting next to for such a long flight.

That is really cool he took noticed and personalized it like that. Good for him. We hear too much of the sh!tty celebs.

DFW to STL on 24 August, Dan Dierdorf, former pro football defenseman for the St. Louis Cardinals football team, sitting across the aisle from me in 1st. He was totally squeezed into his seat. Upon exiting the aircraft after landing in STL I followed him up the jetbridge, he walked with a limp, etc. Amazing what years of football will do to the body...

Also, on my flight last night LGA-STL two hip-hop stars occupied 3E,F. I'm not sure if they went through all the Courvoisier onboard.

Finally had my first celebrity sighting (I'm usually ABQ-OMA or ABQ-DCA, and I don't count politicians). I was on SEA-DFW yesterday when I looked up from my book and noticed some really big hair peeking over the seat in front of me. Tall hair. A bit of looking around and I realized that it was the 80s alternative band The Cure and the guy with the tall hair was Robert Smith. Nice guys.

That's funny -- that's how I killed down time when I worked in reservations...

A former SF 49ers lineman, Bubba Paris, used to tell me that playing in the NFL was "like getting in 12 bad car accidents every year"...

ObCelebSighting: Not on a plane, shared an elevator at the Mirage in LAS with Richard Petty "The King" (NASCAR) and Bill Broderick, the (at the time) NASCAR Pace Car driver and Victory Lane coordinator (He had a very large white beard, and was often seen in the Victory Lane ceremonies. Bill passed away a few years ago, IIRC). Both were very nice and personable.

William Shatner has a horse farm somewhere outside Lexington. I found this out when his stable manager double parked a green Benz and blocked me in. I commented to someone who recognized the car and driver and said "Oh, Shatner must be in town."

I met Jack Kemp in the elevator at the Crown Room in Orlando.

I also saw JK Simmons (Skoda on Law & Order and also in Oz) in the Admirals Club at JFK and later on the flight to LAX. He was reading the paper and the AC was nearly empty (I think we were the only two in there) so I went to another part of the room and let him read his paper.

John Goodman on a TWA flight from MSY to STL.

As long as she showered after the win...

Just last night (9/2/2004), Angie Harmon on my LAX-DFW flight. She was up in the Admiral's Club earlier. I'm 99% positive Tom Arnold was as well. She wasn't escorted by anybody. She left the club about 10 minutes before me. I saw her at the gate, standing around with all the other masses of First Class and Group 1 folks.

Who exactly gets that special service? Two weeks ago, Clint Black gets it. Last week, nothing for Ms. Harmon.

(Oh yeah... She is REALLY attractive in person too )

I guess I am terribly insensitive in recognizing people's face. Years ago when I happened to sit right next to Cameron Diaz on a JFK-LAX flight, I had absolutely no idea who was sitting next to me until some people came and talked to her. In fact, I am still not sure if it was really her.

I don't know... to me, they all look so different in person.

I suspect that whoever arranges the celeb's travel makes the request for special handling (one such agency specializing in celebs is World Travel BTI's "High-Touch Special Services" Group, formerly Hoffman Travel).

Last Saturday, Tisha Campbell (The wife in My Wife and Kids with Damon Wayans) was on my flight AA917 JFK-MIA, she in F, me in Y as always... Also there were a couple of very tall athletic types in F that were probably basketball players but I don't know who. MTV Awards were the following day in Miami so they were probably going down for that.
