With its decision to keep their 2x3x2 NEV4 77W for CIO destinations, AF is certainly making a great gift to the competition.
To be fair, FDF/PTP are markets with 99% cheap tourism and VFR. So the type of J seat on those lines has very few impact on customer choice.

AF has been doing the 772 rotation between ORY-JFK and ORY-CAY since the launch of the ORY-JFK route. Currently birds GSPO and GSPL are used for both routes. A similar rotation is done with the 77Ws currently used for FDP and PTP. The introduction of the BEST configuration for ORY-CAY might just be driven by AF's desire to have such rotation of the equipment and not by the route itself.

I think you are right. The BEST cabin is likely dictated by the JFK route rather than CAY.

Hi Goldorak,

It's true that it is mainly tourism (what is VFR by the way?). It is also true that locally, flying AF in C rather than TX or SS is a socially visible indicator.

Nonetheless having a bit of habits on the route I have seen more than once overbooked AF C cabin, resulting in downgrades. I am pretty sure a significant part of O/D business can shift to TX. After all, they are now offering a better hard product for a portion of the price.

Hi Bodory
VFR stands for "visiting friends and relatives". Those routes are very heavy VFR traffic-oriented. Locals working in métropole returning to the islands for vacations or islanders going to métropole for visiting family/friends living there. Thank you for the insider view. Note that with only 14J seats in the COI config, it's easy to get overbooked (especially when you take into consideration "AF family" upgrading themselves in J

I have updated the 772s on the wiki (added the new configuration -28J- as well as the planes that have been converted, based on observations)

This is the same scenario for my usual CDG-SDQ route. Flying AF even in Y is a social visible indicator, for some people it would be a shame to take the TX flight. I think AF does a very good job with the capacity planning in Business class. C is often 75% when the flight is operated by a COI 77W, but consistenly full during winter, when a 772 or 77W Leisure are used. Nevertheless, they struggle to fill out the Y cabin even during the highest seasons.

Another point: brunos stated back in December that all 19 77W had been converted and that there were no more 77W remaining.

The original plan was to convert 25 out of the 43 77W (44 out of 62 Boeing 777), since this announcement, the fleet has grown from 62 to 68. Will AF just leave 24 planes with NEV4?

On top of that, what will happen with the 777s that have new W and Y but NEV4 in J?

Also, for summer season, it seems SFO will have BEST on the days the evening flight AF82/85 is operated.

Of course, the delivery of the extra 77W had been scheduled since 2015, that is not new. All along AF planned to have 25 772s and 19 77Ws (not 25 as you state) with BEST. AFAIK nothing has changed. AF had planned to have only 44 BEST out of 68 777s.

I have a PTY-CDG flight booked on July 7th. I was just notified that this equipment has changed from 772 to 77W.

This is interesting as this route has always consistently been 772 - and of late always BEST.

I wonder what this will do to BEST/non BEST. Need to go look at the cabin...

Update; downgraded from BEST to NEV4. Pain in the neck!

This has also another advantage during the winter months as you have less risks of delays/cancellations because of severe winter weather than in DTW, MSP or CVG.
What does this mean for the coming months, of course I don't know.

I guess I was hoping that there was a chance that AF would have a BEST 77W on one of the ATL flights this summer. I figured if anyone would know, it would be you.
I did another ATL ride this week in BEST, but unfortunately, as feared, no more BEST to ATL from next week. So no more BEST to any Skyteam US hubs, outside JFK which is not a good connection point and also which is a destination loosing soon BEST seats with the replacement of a 777 by A380

It appears there is sometimes a lack of logic and common sense when it comes to offering BEST capacity on key hubs and destinations such as JFK or ATL.

And it's a nonsense to keep some aircrafts (77W 42J, some with a mix of BEST in Y-W and non-BEST in J) with "old" seats....
