I'm new to AF, (formerly an LH/*A loyalist) and frankly I was a bit surprised and disappointed at the lack of a flatbed business class seat... until I flew CPT-CDG last week on a 777. Much better experience (although I did have a bit of backache tbh)...

I'm struggling to understand from this thread whether there is a general AF commitment to upgrade seats across all the fleet, or is it just a bunch of 777s that get 'the comfy chair'?

Hi jcmetrokraft,

Air France has the following plans:
  • Refurbish 44 Boeing 777 planes. There will be some 777-300ER planes that will not receive the new BEST configuration. Some of them will have only 2 rows of Business Class, the so-called "COI" (Caraibes Océan Indien) version rostered on flights between Paris and the French Overseas Departments in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean (Réunion), as well as to a number of low yield destinations. Then there are a couple of 777-300ERs that will have a somewhat larger Business Class cabin and will also retain the angled-flat seats. These planes are rostered *generall* on lower yield destinations (for instance, Rio de Janeiro, Miami). But of course, as substitutions happen all the time, you may find yourself on a plane that is supposed to have the new BEST seats but doesn't, and the other way around. You can see the status of refits in the Wiki at the start of this thread.
  • Air France's fleet of Airbus 330-200s will come next. But refits have not started yet
  • Last will be the A380 fleet.
  • Air France's Airbus A340s will not be refitted with the new BEST seats as they'll leave the fleet soon.

I hope this helps. You'll find that the Air France BEST cabin product is superior to the Lufthansa one as the LH product does not have single seats and not aisle access from every seat, the old Air France seats - which are not lie-flat - are inferior to the Lufthansa product, which are (some people may disagree, but that is sort of overall consensus).

I'm flying MIA-CDG in September. Right now the seat maps show 2-3-2 configuration for Business class. Do you know if the plane will have the "old" 2-3-2 seats or will they at least be "refurbished" 2-3-2 seats?

It will have the "old" (=NEV4) seat. Refurbished BEST would have a 1-2-1 config.

Just a precision, 24 777s will not be retrofitted. The majority of AF longhaul planes (58 out of 102 do not have BEST and will not by end-2017.

Certainly feels like on some route that only 0.06% of their planes have the BEST seats

Just updated the Wiki with the BEST routes for summer 2017. Source is expertflyer.

I trust this is helpful.

Also, I tried to update the fleet overview.

All Boeing 777-200ER aircraft have now been fitted with the BEST cabin. However, I don't know which ones have the quick change cabin and which ones don't, so I didn't know in which bucket to post.

For the 777-300ER I think the refit program is (almost) finished as well?
  • All planes supposed to have a Premiere cabin are refitted
  • All planes supposed to have no P/BEST cabin have been refitted
  • All planes supposed to remain in a no P/NEV 4 configuration remain that way
  • All planes supposed to be in the COI configuration with NEV4 seats remain that way

Hence, all Business class cabins are now in their "final" stage. No more NEV3 and NEV2 seats, all seats are either BEST or NEV4.

Should we start a new thread and a new Wiki with the progress of the refurbishment of the A330 cabins?

Thank you San Gottardo
and yes, I think it will be useful to have a separate thread for the A332 refurbishment when it will start.

All are good suggestions.

I assume that your "list" refers to 77W, as all 772 have now BEST. Then I don't see what is a "No P/BEST". I believed that all 77W are (will be in a few months) either P with BEST or no P with NEV4.

Do we have news on the A330 refit? It was announced a year ago, but has it been confirmed? And it is to start by end-2017, so has the seat been selected?

Not started yet, AFAIK. And yes I believe the seat has been chosen as it was already announced last year that Zodiac is the supplier. I am guessing it will be the same as in the B789 or very similar.

What is surprising is that we got no news whatsoever in more than a year. With the fiasco of the A350 (CX is really suffering with the quality of seats and toilets), I wonder if AF changed its mind.

- SFO (AF082/083)

Seems to only be on Mon/Wed/Fri most of summer schedule. Tues/Thurs/Sat/Sun seem to be not BEST.

Is that both ways, BEST only on MWF whether going E or W?

When they fly SFO-CDG on BEST, does it not turn around the next day for CDG-SFO? Then that plane flies SFO-CDG again the day after that?

Or are they swapping planes every other day?

They are based in a France, so this is the other way around. The plane which flies CDG-SFO turns around 2 or 3 hrs later for SFO-CDG.
