And I hope they were able to fix the entertainment system. It was not working on 664 this morning, and I was in First Class. Fortunately I had my iPad with me and caught up with Season 4 of MadMen. Other than that a great flight on a domestic 747-400. This marked my 20th domestic 747-400 flight this summer. The 747-400 old or new has been the best.

Non-reconfigured (Old) 747 N194UA in service

it would appear that the "old" version 747 is operating UA893 SFO-ICN Oct 2nd and UA892 ICN-SFO Oct 3rd ( per UA Cargo )
This would work out for me as I've been on a w/l for over 2 months on 893 and it's been basically sold out for the last 1.5 months. More C seats is a good thing this Sat.

UA 973 on 10/1

Well, OLCI would not let me checkin for UA 973 tomorrow (originally the old 747 which has apparently been switched to the new 747 config). This means chances for UDU are looking bleak (I am PreExec). Now I worry that my current E+ seat will become and plain E on the new plane since the rows are not the same. UGH! Should also be a zoo at the gate tomorrow.

Remember, the new config has 374 seats, while the old one has 347. I had this happen to me last Saturday trying to go to ORD on 664. I kept my seat in E+, and even got a gate upgrade to the new C. I think you'll be fine, but I don't think the gate will be very crowded.

I was on yesterday's 973 and had expected the worst but in the end found it to be a pretty smooth situation.

I did OLCI with old (Y) seat assignment at 24-hours out. Overnight, upgrade cleared without seat assignment into NC. OLCI was closed all day and it wasn't until the airport at 1pm that I was able to get a BP -- and the agent at that point selected my seat for me from a wide-open seat map.

Gate area itself was quite controlled. Business had 55 people on the waitlist and ~8 open seats, and that increased when ~8 people moved from C to F.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the whole situation.

Looks like 664 and 973 have been switched to 47C on Monday, October 4. I'm on 973 in 39G...keeping my fingers crossed to be able to get back into E+. Don't recall ever getting upgraded on ORD-SFO-ORD route as a 1P.

Keep the faith--the thread has at least one report of a 1P scoring a UDU on a 74C on this route...

Yup. I got a gate upgrade on 664 on a Saturday morning. All hope is not lost!

Exclamation Heads-up ICN, PVG

N194UA coming your way:

FlightNumber(date) ORG-DST

- 893(02) SFO-ICN
- 892(03) ICN-SFO
- 857(03) SFO-PVG
- 858(05) PVG-SFO

No further updates in UALCargo--it shows the B747 back on SFO-ORD from 10/6, which, again, I don't believe for a second.

This plane has been doing a series of somewhat predictable, alternating SFO-ICN and SFO-PVG turns over the past few weeks. (The one SFO-NRT-ORD-SFO being a distinct exception.) Upcoming C travelers on SFO-ICN and SFO-PVG routings should continue to take heed!

Let's hope for that. I did OLCI 23 hrs 59 min before the flight. .bomb automatically assigned me an equivalent E+ seat (22G vs 39G), but I opted for 45A instead, as E+ seemed to be quite full at the moment. Don't plan on sleeping, so galley noise is not an issue.

I was asked to confirm that I want to sit in E- during check-in...is that new?

Nope, this happens regularly if you're E+ eligible and select a E- seat. It's nice because it wards off the less savvy 1P/1K from those coveted "E-" exit rows on the widebodies.

Next up: NRT, PVG

The old config returns from PVG on the morning of Oct 5. And back over the Pacific it goes...

- 837(5) SFO-NRT
- 838(6) NRT-SFO
- 857(6) SFO-PVG
- 858(8) PVG-SFO

Those on 664/973 can expect subs through 10/8. As of post time, UALCargo still shows 664/973 returning to a B747 starting 10/6.

Edit: scratch that, 664/973 are indeed showing 74C right now through 10/8.

I just hope they don't decide to send it to SYD next week!

On the one hand, anything's possible--looks like it pulled a SFO-HKG-ORD in late July. On the other hand, I don't believe it's ever flown to SYD since coming back online. And it generally steers clear of LAX.
