Safety updates to inflight dining
Your safety and the safety of our employees is our highest priority. To try and further limit potential exposure to coronavirus (COVID-19) on board, we’re temporarily adjusting our inflight service as of March 29 and will be moving to primarily pre-packaged foods and sealed beverages. Preorder meals and food for purchase will not be available. We’re also unable to offer special meals except for Kosher meals on flights to and from Tel Aviv.
Beverage changes for all flights
We will be offering sealed beverages on all flights. If you’re on a flight under 1 hour, you’ll receive beverages on request. We’ll also offer coffee and tea on domestic flights departing before 9:45 a.m. and on all international and premium transcontinental flights. Non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary, and alcoholic beverages are complimentary in premium cabins. Wine and beer are also complimentary in United Economy® on long-haul international flights.

We won't have snacks available in United Economy for flights under 2 hours and 20 minutes or in United First® for flights under 1 hour. As always, you're welcome to bring snacks on board. For flights between 1 hour and 2 hours and 20 minutes in United First, you'll receive an "all-in-one" snack bag with a wrapped sanitizer wipe, 8.5-ounce bottled water and two snacks.
For flights 2 hours and 20 minutes or longer, you'll receive an "all-in-one" snack bag with a wrapped sanitizer wipe, 8.5-ounce bottled water and two snacks in United Economy. In the premium cabin, you'll be offered a snack box.

This. Over the past 4 weeks I've flown UA 4 times across the Atlantic. One flight was miserable - bored, vacant FAs, one drink and they disappeared, lukewarm food. Two were exceptional - attentive crew, asked for our drink preferences and knew what kind of wines were on board, didn't disappear after meal service, kept snack baskets stocked, and poured drinks throughout the flight. One was somewhere in between.

For those who need to get their drink on - American extended the main cabin alcohol sales until Jan 22.

Also worth noting that this is always the way the big three airlines work. E.g., even in non-pandemic times, I've seen absolutely wonderful things AA does and UA does not do (such as Flagship First) and also absolutely awful things AA does that UA does not do (such as pulling IFE off their planes and installing microscopically small lavs).
Every airline not subsidized by a government does a bunch of stuff to cut costs- but they do DIFFERENT stuff to cut costs.

United are very much a subsidized airline - billions in assistance - one of the most subsidized airlines in the world.

Good point. For years, UA, DL and AA shamelessly cried crocodile tears via the "Open Skies Agreement," blaming those nasty subsidies for cheaper airfares and wonderful inflight service by the ME3. Since Subsidies 'R Us now, the US cabal has shifted the blame for cold sandwiches in a plastic bag to a virus.

Sure, UA/DL/AA could have fired tens of thousands of employees and the billions would have been spent via unemployment and other assistance but when demand picked back up good luck recalling all those pilots, FA's, ramp workers, maintenance workers, etc - sure, some would come back and many others would have taken other jobs. Had they not had the payroll assistance program - I can only imagine what airfare would like today with limited staff a limited schedule AND the same service you see today.

Just got off UA1836(20) EWR-MCO. No pre-departure beverage. One round of drinks for the entire flight. No slop-wich offered. Takeoff box or a pack of cookies.
Good thing we hit up the Garden State Diner. We’re saving our snack boxes for a light meal at Disney someday.
Crew was friendly. It was on par for what I expected based off of this forum, but still depressing.
