Update 2017: United p.s. is now called Transcontinental Service. This service is available on flights between EWR<>LAX, EWR<>SFO, and BOS<>SFO.

FAQs
Are all flights on these routes lie-flat, etc?
Yes -- all non-stop flights from SFO/LAX to/from EWR and SFO<>BOS are configured as such regardless of aircraft used. All scheduled aircraft have a lie-flat premium cabin.

Are these CPU-eligible flights?
No -- no CPU on these flights. It will take RPU/GPU/mileage+copays to upgrade. Generally, these are "hard" upgrades.

Are TODs / Cash upgrades offered?
Yes, $298 cash OW upgrades are regularly offered.

Get a couple of tacos or dumplings in EWR before the flight. The taco place (the 130s concourse) and dumpling place (the one-teens concourse) are both outstanding!

No, not at all. I don't recall exactly but if memory serves me, the J were around $1700-$1900.

I was excited about the dumpling shop, but the reviews on Yelp have been pretty savage. It's also quite overpriced (I know it's airport food, but dim sum is generally dirt cheap). Nonetheless - will aim to grab a bite ahead of time.

Interesting that Yelp is harsh on dumplings. The tacos in the 130s concourse are definitely good! PS late night snack is not worth staying up for.

Best aircraft SFO-EWR business class?

I see there are two different 757-200 aircraft flying the SFO-EWR route and I was wondering if either had a better chance of being a newer plane, or if one was better than the other. One version has 16 business class seats, the other has 28. I have read that there are a lot of the older Continental planes flying this route which have been updated for the PS service, but they are not the same as the purpose-built planes for PS. (There's also the 777 but the times don't work so that's not an option). Thanks for any advice!

Hi flyaway1234, welcome to FlyerTalk!

The 28J configuration is the one which was purpose-built for flying p.s. and the sCO 16J one also flies international TATL routes (and the occasional domestic). I believe the community has a slight preference for the 28J sUA planes, but personally I wouldn't let that trump schedule as far as convenience goes. And the best flight is always the one with that P, PN, or R space that you're looking for

I agree with with findark - schedule and space are more important. Consider yourself lucky the 777 doesn't work for you - J seats are far less comfortable than the PS seats...unless you were one of the few moved into GF!

While the manufacture date might be similar, the sUA p.s. were upgraded more recently and the cabin is newer/fresher than the sCO planes.

Yep, flew again in 777 J last night, upgrade at time of purchase. No storage shelf over one's shoulder. No foot space for personal item, takeoff and landing. All pairs are a bit intimate, the closest being the middle two of the center four, where I had a stranger unintentionally spooning into me one flight to Europe.

One has the same sense as coach of claustrophobic unease we're all pros at tolerating. The difference is a better meal, better screen, and the chance to pretend none of this is happening while fully reclined.

When they rip these out and update to Polaris, the 777 should be nice. In the meantime, now that I've been buying p.s. J for most flights, I don't ever see myself actually paying for 777 J.

If you are 1K/GS and pay for 777 J you are likely to end up in F. (Happened to me recently but unfortunately I had to cancel the trip.)

Yep. I bought two flexible J tickets (Z) on the 772 and was planning on moving to a different flight if I didn't get the 'surprise and delight' upgrade to 'GF'. Both were upgraded. One at T-71 and one at T-32

Will any of these P.S. 757s getting a Polaris hard product update? I've been on 8 P.S. flights this year (5 of them in J) and the state of the current interior is pretty appalling.

Was on N590UA (a nearly 20 year old 757) this past weekend and the seats/walls had a noticeable grimy, faded look. My seat controls and remote had a stickiness about them. The lady next to me was wiping down the entire seat area (though this is probably prudent on all flights), and at the end of the flight a guy presented a FA with a plastic covering that had broken off his seat shell. And I would highly recommend not looking inside the overhead baggage bins as I shudder to think about when the last time those were wiped down.

It's a damn shame cause the 757 is a great bird (heck, it's part of my username), and it'd be nice if UA put at least some effort in putting the "premium" in P.S.

Unfortunately UA's success at filling up the premium cabin on this route has exceeded expectations so I don't expect any investments here soon.

The official answer is no in the near future, at least for the hard product.

How will the switch to United Polaris affect United p.s.® Premium Service flights?
Beginning in mid-2017, United p.s. transcontinental business class service will feature some of the amenities that are offered with United Polaris business class, but overall p.s. business class service will not change significantly.
However, with rumors of UA cancelling the engine update for the 757J fleet (sUA 28J ones), there's a potential where they will increase widebody flying to replace the retiring 757s, but that's just pure speculation for fleet planning 2 years out.
