Pilots are being told to expect near-term vacancy bid and training uptick to staff the "imminent acquisition of 30-40 used A319 & A320".

Plans are already in place for an additional ~15 A319s (ex-CZ) and 2 A320 (origin unknown), which falls short of the 30-40 number cited in the memo.

Interesting...

Fire sale from Air Berlin?

Potentially, but AB 320s have CFM power, and to date, all the A319/320s UA has either acquired or expressed interest in have IAE motors.

The CFM56-5 on the Airbii has some similarities to the CFM56-7 of the 737NG fleet, but they'd need to take on a pretty sizable number of frames to make such a subfleet viable and interchangeable (from an operational perspective) with the existing fleet, which flows throughout the domestic system.

Agreed then, probably not Air Berlin (I was just grasping at straws).

So to continue to grasp:
  • Maybe more from CA?
  • Maybe AZ?
  • Maybe AS is dumping their Aribus frames they will get from VX?

VX uses CFM engines, too, so rule that out.

They will get aircraft from whoever is selling. The last operator isn't all that relevant. But of those you listed, only China Southern (CZ) has A319/320s with IAE engines. The IAE engine seems to be not nearly as common on the A320 series as the CFM is. I think this has been one of the stumbling blocks for UA looking to buy used aircraft - there aren't many IAE A319/320s out there and for sale.

AZ, AirBerlin, Air Canada, Air China, Allegiant, DL all fly CFM.

IAE airlines that might work (there are a lot more)

Air New Zeeland (unlikely as that't their only narrowbody).

AA has 25 GECAS leased former Am West with IAE. Rest of their large 319 and 320 combined fleet are CFM.

BA has 67 IAE units

China Southern is an obvious choice with lots of 319 and 320s with IAE engines.

Wow! That is quite the increase. Almost like adding five 772s!
