Yes, but ...
- Before day of travel, your original fare class needs to be avaible or there may be a fare difference. Also, you may get charged for a mileage redeposit
- Day of travel is easier, as UA may open up the fare classes but by then the seat choices in economy may be limited and there is still the mileage redeposit issue

The best way to handle this is to apply the mileage upgrade request only to the segments you are willing to accept. It takes an phone agent to do this.

While the holiday week travel will be down, this will be less likely to clear. Non-holiday week, this is an impossible upgrade for a UA Silver.

Check after the 1st

I will non-confidently guess moderate chances. From the seat map there are potentially about 30 higher-status passengers, but the actual number is probably lower. A MUA would quite likely clear.

Chance of Mileage Upgrade Award? EWR-CDG Sep 26

Hello, couldn't find any posts in this forum on upgrade experiences/availability between EWR and CDG. I have an R fare (premier plus) ticket and I used a MUA for 20,000 miles and $425 for a Polaris upgrade. Currently on the waitlist. Wondering if this will be more likely to clear sooner or later or at the gate, or not at all. Here is the availability:

United 57 September 26, 2019
Available fare classes: J9 JN9 C9 D9 Z7 ZN7 P0 PN0 PZ0 IN0 I0O 9O N9 A9 R0 RN0 Y9 YN9 B9 M9 E9 U9 H9 HN9 Q9 V9 W9 S9 T9 L9 K0 G0 N9 XN3 X0

Would appreciate any insight into this!

OK not the best at this and will be curious to hear what other here have to say. But with J9 and flight still quite aways out on a very popular route even though it is a Thursday flight I would still say don't expect to clear until very close in, perhaps even day of flight. I assume you are not GS. Just my 2 cents.

Do you have status?

Business class is booked 11/44. Premium Plus is booked 10/21. Paid Premium Plus customers are supposed to have priority over paid economy customers (although, Global Services instruments would trump that prior to the gate, and might still trump it at the gate also; nobody’s really sure).

I’d say, all signs point to neutral. Thursday can be a popular business travel date; 11/44 is actually pretty high load for three months in advance. However, being on an R fare should help propel you up the list. It’s too early to tell for sure, but it doesn’t look hopeless.

J9 isn’t relevant in this context. 9 is the maximum that an inventory bucket can display. In order to know the actual load, you have to look at the flight status page.

UA seems to like to hold upgrades to the gate sometimes. Nobody’s really sure why. They may process them all at T-24, or when the hidden upgrade list stops processing at about T-3, or they may just run them at the gate. There’s no way to tell.

Not unless there are major storms at EWR. It’s unlikely they will upgrade anyone unless there is a missed connection. They’ll sell those four seats.

I'd expect them to start clearing around T-24, though I suppose they might make you wait to the gate.

C9 D0 is just silly booked 29/50.

Yes,
I understand holding off upgrades until boarding, but I would expect them to release D, Z or even P inventory to encourage sales at this point.

Hoping for a comfortable flight back home
