In which part of the GE machine the officer did insert the card in and the machine read it?
Are you sure it was a GE kiosk not a NEXUS kiosk or an updated GE kiosk? All the flight info came up just like it would for a passport and their receipts were printed out. I suggest others try it on their next trip through. |

Daughter's NEXUS app 15 March, Conditional approval 15 April.
Appointment available TOMORROW at Ft. Erie (obviously a cancellation because it is just the one appointment slot) but she can't miss school for this. Currently NO appointments at YYZ. Will wait a while to see if a block opens up there before I grab Ft. Erie. |

Yes I am sure it was a GE kiosk. There are 15 of them at Pearson T 1. He took my girls cards and put them on the glass scanner where you would have inserted the passport.

If that's an accurate new development, then it would give an explanation why the US side are phasing out the Nexus kiosks: The GE kiosks can read the NEXUS card and it can be used instead of a passport @:-) ^
Remember that strictly speaking, a passport is a requirement for all international travel by air into Canada so using NEXUS instead of a passport (instead of in addition to it) is not advisable. NEXUS only at ground and marine crossings is just fine though. |

Probably the reverse as it has a coding similar to a passport.

I was surprised this hadn't been mentioned yet. It has the same coding as a passport, and I believe there's a very good reason for this - so that it can be used in the same machines that can scan passports, without requiring hardware upgrades. |

But I do hope this doesn't revive a lot of posts with something like, now that my Nexus card works using GE machines, do I really have to bring my passport. |
I always have passport on my person, but ever since I got the NEXUS card, I store it safely away in purse and use the NEXUS card everywhere I can. If someone asks for the passport, I have it, but I'm not flashing it unless they ask. I thought the GE machine was the one inevitable in the plan, but now that I have this tip about the NEXUS card reading in the machine, I will try that and just leave the passport in the bag in its protective leather cover. I read about some places being sticklers for pristine passports and figured the less abuse it gets, the better.

New passport arrived today. I updated it in GOES, but based on this thread, that may not be enough.
I'm going to wait a day or two or three for any necessary processing to happen before I call the phone number for the Lansdowne office to see what they say. When I went in for my interview, I specifically asked them about updating my passport and whether it could be done at any GE center or if it had to be a NEXUS center. They said they weren't sure but once I got my new passport to call them and they should be able to take care of it over the phone. That was nice. If it isn't already fixed because of my GOES update and they aren't able to fix it over the phone, I'll likely try to update it at the EWR GE center next week when I'm passing through. If that doesn't solve it, then the first chance I'll have to update it is when I'm driving through YVR/Blaine in July, but I'm hopeful that, regardless, I can get the GE portion working to the point that I can use GE when I come back from MVD/PTY next month. I'll keep you all updated (as I don't think anyone has reported trying to update passport details at a GE center or by phone yet). |

Update online immediately after getting the new passport, then give it to an office to do the update when I cross into Canada and am near an office. I've never had a problem, though given I am dual US-Canadian with both on file, flagging for expiry seems low risk, given at least 1 passport would always be up to date. |
Iris Scans - Detroit?
Just got NEXUS conditional approval today. In case anyone was wondering, I applied on March 28, already had Global Entry so that may have sped the process up since it was really only the Canadians that had to do a background check.
I'm hoping to have NEXUS card in hand for an air trip to Toronto over US Memorial Day weekend, and I see I can very easily get appointments at Detroit. Does anyone know if it is possible to cross over to Windsor for the Iris scan after the interview like you can in Champlain or Niagara Falls? If so I'm thinking I'd rather do Detroit than check compulsively for cancellations at the Niagara/Toronto enrollment centers, which would be the closest ones for me. Also, thanks to everyone who has contributed to this great thread over the past 5 years...a wealth of very useful information! |
