My hypothesis as to why applications are taking so long right now is that since the program was launched in 2007, all of the first batch of users are now renewing (2007+5= 2012). I'm guessing they simply didn't forecast the volume of renewals and have failed to plan for the increase in workload.
I'm at six weeks and waiting like others...

Just wanted to write a note that Nexus seems to have a longer processing time nowadays. I just applied for my baby and it has been 7 weeks without a status change. Already wrote an email to inquire about the status and got admonished that it hasn't been 8 weeks yet (they say to email after 8 weeks of not hearing) and that there is no way to expedite the process. Sheesh. Back in 2010 it took 6 days for an application to be processed for me and my husband. Not sure why it takes so long to do a background check on an infant, unless there is now a huge queue for this program.

I'm at six weeks and waiting like others... I am one of the original 2007 holders, mine expired April 13th..I totally forgot about my Nexus expiring this year, and didn't apply on the website till 2nd week of March...So I am also at six weeks and waiting. |
Also there are more applicants due to awareness of the program via promotions at land crossing and US bound CBP flight checkpoints.
If you are waiting in a lineup of 15+ vehicles or lineup of 200+ US bound passengers and seeing these NEXUS users waltz by you would seriously consider applying for one as well. |

I got my NEXUS in mid-2007 and did not realize that you had to go throguh the full application process all over again until I was in their YYZ centre a week ago to get my kids' passes done. They reminded me that mine was expiring soon and that I needed to re-apply.
Silly me - I just assumed they'd actually notify members that their cards were expiring and that they needed to re-apply instead of expecting us all to notice. I suspect there will be a bunch of unhappy campers who go to the machine one day and find out their card has expired. :( Looks like I might be without NEXUS for a few weeks in June. Unfortunately I have at least two trips booked to the US in the first part of June. |

I sounded like the OP of this question wants to use public transport only? (Or I guess rent a car, per 2nd reply.) Here's my two cents (soon to be non-existent in Canada, where they have decided to stop making pennies!)...
I drive from Boston to Canada a lot, that's why I applied (still awaiting approval). I cross often at Thousand Islands, just north of Watertown NY. That's further than the Champlain border, at 370 miles, but I like the drive thru upstate NY (and am always en route to Kingston or near, where I am now). I hope to do an interview here. Currently I am without my own vehicle, so I have had to look at public transport options. You can take a bus to Burlington but I couldn't see how to cross (or get to and stop at) the border from there, though you can rent a car in Burlington very cheaply and presumably drive to the border. I'm actually doing a one-way one-day rental soon from Watertown and it's not very expensive, so I'd agree with the 2nd suggestion above about renting a car for a day to drive to the Champlain border. Though Thousand Islands is much prettier... :) Flights to YYZ weren't that cheap and I checked a number of times, even though Porter is showing some specials in the paper right now. Last I looked it was cheaper to go to Toronto City airport (YTZ), but not sure if they have an office there? The bus is a HUGE pain from Boston, so I'd give that a miss. Like I said you can go to Burlington but then how to get to the border? And you can go to Syracuse then get another to Watertown but it basically takes all day one way, so you'd have to do an overnight, which would negate the cheaper price of the bus. Train is interesting, I know you can go to Albany and change to Montreal, or go to Buffalo and cab to the border? But again it's a long journey, probably can't do rtn in one day like in a car. Not sure if this is at all helpful, but figured I'd throw in my experience. I plan to get GE after Nexus, and it sounds like you do too, best to go ahead and GET Nexus, or like the post at top says, you'll probably lose the fee and have to pay again for GE. That's a $150 cost total, right? Cheaper to rent car & drive in one day up & back. |
Wife Denied - Ombudsman? Chances of Success?
Canadian family of 3, myself, 15yr old son, and wife applied for Nexus. Son and I were approved, wife was denied.
Reason given was immigration violation. I will try and sum up circumstances as briefly as possible: Neither one of us had ANY idea this would be on her record, and are actually rather shocked. About 20 years ago, when we had just started dating we were both on a small boat with a group of friends in the Niagara River. I actually forget the actual problem, but I think it was some kind of engine trouble, or running out of gas, something similar. We pulled into a dock on the U.S. side. After solving our trouble we went into the attached bar to have a drink before getting on our way. We noticed a couple of officials watching us, and approached them to ask why. They asked us if we had gotten off a huge yacht parked beside our small boat. We told them no. They asked for ID, told us they were doing a drug surveillance operation on the larger boat. They then told us if we ever cross by boat into the U.S we have to call customs and report. They gave us the phone number and wished us a good day. We went back to our table, finished our drinks and left. It was such a minor occurrence, neither one of us thought anything about it. No tickets were give, no mention of anything other than call if you come over again. We have been to the U.S. countless times since, by car, air and foot. Neither one of us own a boat, or even have a boaters license. We both have squeaky clean records, my wife is a pre-school teacher and has never even had a parking ticket. You can imagine our surprise when we were told that she could not have Nexus because of this incident. What makes it even stranger is that I was with her, and I was approved. We have sent a description of the incident to the Ombudsman. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this process? How long do you think it will be until we hear back? Will they let us know their decision one way or the other? What do you think her chances are of being approved in the end? Any thoughts or previous experiences appreciated. |

Welcome to FT!
Same here... I'll wait it out. Too bad, since I am near a center now but going away from it for a few weeks... I am going to the US from Edmonton in late may and was hoping to have my nexus card by then... doesn't look like that will be the case :( from what i read on the site, once you get your conditional approval on the website, there is a really long wait to get the interview/iris scan, etc at the enrolment centres. thats too bad because i wanted to take advantage of the nexus card and won't be going anywhere again until muuuch later this year. |

That used to be required but is being phased out. When I used the box at the Whirlpool Bridge Nexus, the CBSA agent asked me what I had written on the card. The only thing the card does for you is link your declaration to your credit card for payment. I assume if you are over the tax-free amount, turning in the card avoids a trip to secondary. Under the present system, it seems better to give the card to the agent than to put it in the slot and be tested for no reason.

Why would you expect that? Do you get notice that it is time to renew your passport?
I do get notifcation to renew other government documents - e.g. driver's license, health card. |

Did they specifically tell you the immigration incident was that specific boating incident, or is that an assumption on your part?
She told her story, and the agent told her to write to the ombudsman. Not 100% sure if he confirmed it absolutely, so I guess it is part assumption. However there have never been ANY other problems, and other than mistaken identity it really can't be anything else. Would really love to know if anyone has had any sucess writing the ombudsman in a similar case. |
End of this week will be week 7 on my NEXUS application -- still showing "Pending Review". Already have GE.
Anyone go over 8 weeks yet and contact the ombudsman? |
