I have a general dislike of the FaceID thing, but I find it useful for one purpose: if I happen to be using a phone mounted on a bike handlebar on a day where I'm not using sunglasses. Other than that I'd prefer to have the fingerprint sensor, if it comes to choosing between biometric features to unlock the phones.

The FaceID problem I encounter comes when using some iridium-coated lenses on sunglasses I use while biking at times. Tipping my head back while trying to give the camera a peak below the frames sometimes works but it's just not reliable enough that way to be convenient. So on some days where I'm biking I go out with one of the fingerprint-using phones instead of the FaceID ones, and that's because of the sunglasses.

It really would have been helpful if Apple had released an IOS update for FaceID months ago that allowed you to create multiples "faces" that would be authorized to your account provided a certain % of the face was the same as the master image - so unlocking with a mask, sunglasses, or other obstructions would be easy.

Face-based unlocking without an "attention aware" aspect -- an aspect which seems to often be related to what the eyeballs are doing -- would sort of make FaceID less useful at securing the information/device than is already the case.

If FaceID were to be set to work while wearing all sunglasses, then wouldn't a static picture of the person in all those sunglasses always work to unlock a phone set to unlock with FaceID?

The frame of glasses is within acceptable bounds of the face model. But a face mask covers too much contours of the face and exceeds the bounds, therefore its rejected.

FaceID builds a 3D map using infrared, and the infrared can read through lenses of eyewear. (3d is also why it wont be tricked by a photograph)

You seem determined to invent reasons why Apple FaceID can't work for you. Instead of going through all the motions why not just try it with your extra special sunglasses? Many others have and it seems to work for them.

As my posts earlier indicated, it works ok enough for me while biking except when I am biking with sunglasses. No inventing involved by me there either.

So just to clarify my thinking, FaceID works for you with your bike sunglasses EXCEPT when you are biking? Perhaps you should try setting up the second identity while wearing the sunglasses in a biking position as if you were on a ride? It may be that a setup sitting at a desk does not compute to a monkey/football riding scan. It might not be the glasses at all. Just a thought.

When I have a free hand and am not on the move, FaceID is less useful for me than it is when I am driving a wheeled vehicle of some sort or another.
It is definitely some sunglasses' use for me that makes FaceID sub-functional for me during some of my activities.

Fair enough, however my suggestion was to set your second FaceID while in a riding position with your sunglasses on while in exactly the position that it currently fails in. Is it possible that it would then recognize you since that is how you would be positioned when you needed it to function? I find mine is very accurate and serviceable to the point that I have my wife as my second FaceID scan so that she can get into my phone easily if necessary. It works great for two different people. We also share our unlock code for our two iPhones.
