Face-based unlocking without an "attention aware" aspect -- an aspect which seems to often be related to what the eyeballs are doing -- would sort of make FaceID less useful at securing the information/device than is already the case.
FaceID builds a 3D map using infrared, and the infrared can read through lenses of eyewear. (3d is also why it won’t be tricked by a photograph)
The frame of glasses is within acceptable bounds of the face model. But a face mask covers too much contours of the face and exceeds the bounds, therefore it’s rejected.
