Searching Forums
I don't seem to be able to search forums. Any advice?
|
I find this totally unusable. Too slow, too cluttered. It's like the "Windows XP Home Version" of bulletin board software

Maybe this discussion would be best (and most productive, IMHO) if continued in the proper place?

Patiently hoping it all comes together...
I'm relatively new to FT - and now, am telling myself to be patient for the bugs to get worked out. But it is a bit perplexing to have things take a long time to load (with fairly fast ADSL,) or go to error forms, or load with different appearances and options after a few hours. Some of the graphics do not post correctly (e.g. the "thumbs down" graphic posts as "thumbs up". Definitely not following through on poster's intent...)
Another issue I am noticing is when one posts, the time of post is totally screwed up, even being on another DAY than the post. I really benefit from info on FT, and even try to contribute a bit. But it is very difficult to do either when things are so confuzzed. May the IT gods get this working beyond the vaporware / unevenware phase. I miss it! :D |
Agreed. The new Flyertalk needs to go "Back to the Future".
Bring back the old boards. |

New FT is incredibly slow for me.
Been out of town for several days and just logged on with great interest to the new deal.
First reaction is I do not like it at all, but we all think that on most 'new' things I guess. :) My main problem is it is MILES slower for me than the old FT was. No matter what I go to do ..... it just crawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwls. No idea what time it is set on, (someone posted not mountain time any more but can't waste 5 minutes waiting for that thread to open up) but right now it is all but unusable for me and AFAIK it is early am in the USA, so almost no-one should be using it right now? Has this extreme slowness been the experience of others? I am using identical computer and email server to usual. |
It's set to GMT, but you can edit your profile and select your local time zone there.
It's running just fine for me right now. Looks like they've turned off some of the graphics and colors to speed things up. Friday night I could not get in at all. When you click on FlyerTalk Forums, you'll see how many people are logged on. It seems the more logged on, the slower it will get. Right now there are 321 people using FT, but I've seen it up in the 700's quite a bit. It runs really fast when there's less than 200 people logged on. Once you set up your forums in My FlyerTalk, it will save having to navigate around. You'll find all your preferred forums on one page. |
This site is so frustrating now. Maybe some FTer should start a competing website to offer an improved service. :D
|
This takes longer than.......
I'm on a 56K conenction at home.
To get from clicking on the website name to now (replying to a post) has taken longer than my wait on some occasions at the security line at Terminal D at LAS! Mark, Dallas PS. Admittedly for the 1:00am redeye |
this is absurd

I agree completely the new format really is absurd. randy should just shut it down he just did not know what he was doing and he tried to do it on the cheap. there use to be really good info on ft, but now it takes an hour to find it. forget it |
Please go back to the old format
Now the text boxes are not loading. The background is just white and it is difficult to navigate throught the posts. This is obviously some type of Microsoft Windows webpage software and server given the problems that are plaquing Flyertalk. I wonder if this is some beta version of the new Flyertalk interface. Apple would be the way to go. ^

Hmmmmm . . . The airlines can announce a new mileage perk and you're all eager to wait while they put the new perk together for it to come to fruition.
But . . . let the board where you learn about that new mileage perk revamp the way it delivers the information and you're patience is about as thin as dental floss. If you were paying for this board, you'd have the right to bltch. Since you're not, constructive criticism is best sent to TPTB rather than aired like a hillbilly's dirty laundry in public. This IS after all, flyertalk.com, not trailerpark.gov! I'll admit, it's been one exciting adventure after another since they cranked up the new version. Something different every time you log in. Perhaps it would have been better to leave it down longer until more of the bugs were worked out, I mean, where would you go? It's not like they would loose members to this free board hell this place is like heroin! Regardless of how smoothly a board may run, there will ALWAYS be someone in the background working their fanny off, making sure everyone's desire to bltch & complain goes unimpeded, it's a daily chore, and a full time job to keep a MB running. :-: :-: :-: :-: :-: RANDY: Set up a paypal donation page so those of us who appreciate what you're trying to do can kick in a few bucks to help out. This stuff ain't cheap to run . . . believe me I know! :-: :-: :-: :-: :-: |

Chill out guys, the problems will be resolved. Just takes some time. This was a major software upgrade and there were millions of lines of text that needed to be archived and reloaded into the new architecture.
I'm sure Randy and team will have this place back to normal very soon with a great new look and feel. Just need to remain patient. |

I'm shocked it's UNIX based

Just curious as to how you knew that the new Flyertalk forum is based on a UNIX system? It looks alot like a Windows XP interface to me, which is why I guessed it was a Microsoft based web program. I am surprised that this is UNIX, since it is one of the best systems in terms of speed and reliability. I am using a Power Macintosh G4 with OS 10.3 (Panther) which is UNIX based and have had no problems. The Dell I have at work (Windows 2000 Professional) is a worthless piece of, well, you know. |
Give it time....

Have no trouble with speed of connection...the problem is GETTING connected to the server...succeed about 30% of the time, then just have to leave it for a time...when it connects, great...however still have a problem after reading a thread and returning to AA forum and still server too busy or unable to connect!!
|
been a little faster over here in .AU the past 12 hours or so
Does anyone have a problem with the style sheets not loading? |

It takes about 12-15 sec to load or reload a page for me right now, with an ethernet connection. It is an improvement over not loading at all, but it is still very slow.

S......l......o.......w.....
While I realize the speed will improve with time (at least I hope so anyway)...I'm on a T-1 connection and it's very very slow. I'm not one of those people that believes in "if it ain't broke don't fix it" in every instance, but this is probably one of them that I would have preferred to keep the same.
I'm not complaining as I do appreciate the site but thought I'd offer my opinion as a member. |
Hey, I'm logging in less and less and getting more and more work done. :p
However, it would be nice to come by and check in once a day and not feel like I'm wasting my time. Then again, I could post all my questions and replies to others in one big post. lala |
lalala,
I agree with you. It's so slow that I've gotten down to every two days. It took me five trys to get to the board period today! |
We're zipping along at 1a.m. on the west coast (again). Pity everyone can't be logged on this time and see how the new FT works when you can easily navigate between forums on My FlyerTalk.
|
Please use the technical forum
Folks, welcome to the new-look forums. You may have noticed, this thread is not really AA-specific or AAdvantage-program specific.
As part of the 'new look' FT, we need to ensure that we're starting our threads in the correct place. We have a Technical Issues forum and that's really where this belongs. We also have a nice new 'redirector' facility, which should direct you to any moved threads. Thanks for everybody's participation, and for bearing with Ft Admin while the speed issues are resolved. |
This new format is terrible. With high speed it took 2 minutes of white screen before anything popped up and another two minutes before I got the reply screen.
Why is it that some people feel the need to fix things that ain't broken? P.S. the person who wrote that the blue and white was a bit too bright and distracting was dead on. My eyes hurt. The whole thing is hard to navigate right now. It moves so slowly that you can't even click on various things to trouble shoot and see if that was the area you wanted or not because it takes forever to get into each title. Overall: frustrating and tiresome. This is probably a good guarantee that less people will continue to post and that AA will look elsewhere for feedback. |
Very Slow Page Loads But Even Slower When Using The 'Back' Button
This is in no way meant as a complaint to the IT staff nor is it an admonition to 'hurry up', just an FYI.
I am still experiencing very slow page load and even slower load times when I use the back button on IE 6+/WinXP Pro. I have experienced this on two different systems in two different locations using two different providers. I have no doubt that these problems are being worked on as we speak but I have noticed a lot of people are now posting that they are experiencing very fast speeds and I just wanted to let someone know that this isn't the case for everyone...yet. Thanks. :) |
What I'm getting is not a speed issue as much as it is a working/non-working issue. Either the site will respond really fast, or it will not respond within a 60-second period (at which my browser times out). I suspect it all has to do with the load-balancing and other issues Randy has mentioned (see the "An apology" announcement at the top of any forum). It timed out every time I tried to get in last night, leading me to think the site was taken offline at that point. (I don't think it was.)
Anyway, the point is that although some people are now reporting fast speeds at times, there are lingering problems that the staff is aware of. They are busy trying to work the problems out. While it would be nice to have things perfect from the start, it would be rather difficult to simulate what several hundred simultaneous users do to the system without allowing us to try it. Plus, you would have had zero FT for an extra week. ;) |
4-13-04 Site very slow again
It has been great. Then today someone put the breaks on again.
This is just a FYI |
I'm not noticing any slowdown at this end, but we'll keep an eye out.
|
Right now it's taking 10-30 seconds to open a page or submit a reply.
|
Yes, painfully slow at the moment.
|
I still don't notice any slowdown here, or at home on a dialup (last night). It could be a sporadic network problem between our host and some users.
