Often when you notice Web slowness where it takes a minute before your browser "clicks" and starts downloading, the problem isn't with the Web server you are trying to access, but rather with the DNS server your computer is using. DNS is how hostnames (which are useful to human beings but less useful to computers) are translated into IP addresses. We find it easier to remember the hostname www.flyertalk.com, but computers find it easier to work with the IP address 216.167.74.244.

Usually you are using the DNS server of your Internet Service Provider. For example, I use PacBell DSL, and I've definitely noticed that ever since I started service in late May, I've been experiencing slow DNS servers on a sporadic basis. My connection is still alive and happy, and I know this since I have an interactive "telnet" session which is still alive and working just fine while my Web browser is sitting there waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Once it gets the IP address of the Web server I am trying to access, though, the actual Web page download is pretty speedy.

That's probably more information than those of you who aren't computer geeks really wanted to know.... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I was having problems with no other web sites, and actually this seems to have stopped (well, maybe) in the last hour.

Shareholder Jun 14, 2000 9:46 am

It's Wednesday, and the site is slower than ever before. Thought you guys were working to fix this, to move your servers or something. Any hope to resolve this once and for all?

motnot Jun 14, 2000 9:49 am

See, I'm not the only one!

JRF Jun 14, 2000 9:53 am

So slow this afternoon it was timing out.

Shareholder Jun 14, 2000 9:54 am

I've got a cable modem, so no timing out problems. But things are better now, after 6 pm MST. Seems any posts today have been frozen at 9:52/3. Any answers about these odd occurances today?

Dorian Jun 14, 2000 10:01 am

I was on 64k ISDN yesterday....couldn't get at the site.....some graphic placeholders would load, but then all would time out.

Sharholder! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I get you. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I'm working on the time issue at the moment and will get to the speed issue as soon as I can.

Thank you all for your feedback and for your patience.

And at 9:44 MT it is starting to slow down again. Michael, what's going on? Please answer. I'll check the time problem posting to see if you've responded there. (Gawd, we're beginning to act like addicts whose drinks or heroine has been watered down...!)

Shareholder Jun 22, 2000 8:12 am

Congratulations Michael! We got through a Wednesday without the site bogging down and slowing to a snail's pace. You deserve a pint on all of us if Randy ever let's you escape from the House of Miles. Maybe he'll send you up to Montreal to join us next month, if he can't make it himself. Or at least to the Red Green show in Toronto in September. We'd like to meet the man behind the servers...

Than again, maybe you'd prefer Cancun this weekend!

the site was slow yesterday (as every Wednesday) from 6PM (GMT+1) to about 9PM (GMT+1) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

but I was glad, that was I was not tempted to be on Flyertalk - this was just when the incredible soccer match Jugoslavia - Spain (European Championship) was played and televised: with the decisive two Spain goals in the last two minutes http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Thank you Shareholder. I think overall it was a slightly more succesful Wednesday than we've had in awhile but we still have a ways to go. I'll keep on it until we have an adequate solution.

I really appreciate everybodys support and enthusiasm.

Is all well with the boards... its taking me ages to load up the pages even though Im using a 512Kb connection.... does my use of a Winsock proxy cause any speed issues...??

YES!!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Really, a lot faster. Yesterday I couldn't even get back to the listings after viewing a post, it was so slow.

THANKS

nologic Mar 8, 2001 8:51 am

Yes, much faster. I wonder if they actually did something or if there was an unexpected surge in volume.

LexPassenger Mar 8, 2001 10:47 am

Michael, today's a lot better (Thurs noonish EST). Thanks for all the work you guys do, btw! Even search worked okay.

Michael,
It is extremely slow loading up pages today. I have DSL with 1.2 Mbps download speed, and your site is crawling.

Eugene Mar 8, 2001 7:06 pm

It's pretty fast here, no problem today.

nologic Mar 9, 2001 11:04 am

Very quick right now (1 pm EST), but it was slow earlier.

nologic Mar 10, 2001 9:24 am

Very slow now...frustrating.

Water Polo Ref Mar 11, 2001 7:51 am

My experience with this site is that generally everything comes up pretty quickly. What slows it down is the selection and then display of the banner ads at the bottom of the pages.

There doesn't seem to be a problem at work where I have a very fast connection, but at home or on the road where I have to rely on a modem, things can get bogged down a bit.

This is a problem that is not isolated to FT. I have noticed it with several other groups that either have a variable banner ad system (different banners every so often in the same space) or ones that need to access banners from another location.

nologic Mar 14, 2001 2:32 pm

Very slow for me right now. Anyone else?

I'm on a cable modem and other sites are coming in fast and furious.

Water Polo Ref Mar 14, 2001 2:33 pm

Nice and fast ... off University multiple T3 lines.

matjes Mar 29, 2001 11:39 pm

Flyertalk EXRELEMY SLOW

Since today, the flyertalk bulleting boards are extremely slow, to the point of unuseablility.

The main page builds up very fast, so does the main banner on top and any static elements. But theList of boards, or the list of topics inside a board takes so long, that usually my proxy times out the connection and I only get about 30-50% of the page drawn.
As an example, the main board list stops somewhere between G and K most of the time.

It seems to me that the UBB engine is too busy doing other things, while your HTTPD server seems to have sufficient resources to serve static content.

Please FIX this as ou makes flyertalk unusable!

dgolds Mar 30, 2001 9:03 am

The slow speed you're experiencing might be a problem in the link between wherever you are and the FlyerTalk server.

Resonse time from SFO was great yesterday and today.

dan at WebFlyer Mar 30, 2001 9:14 am

matjes, sorry about the lag... yes, we've been wrestling with this for a while, and appreciate our audience sticking with us through the slow times.

We're working on another bulletin board solution that appears to have better optimization techniques which will hopefully alleviate this slowness...

I hope you'll put some thought into getting rid of unnecessary stuff. This thread's page is currently about 1/3 code for the "Hop To" box. Who cares? 5k of redundant code being loaded for every single thread we look at is just an immense waste of bandwidth.

home.webflyer.com very slow or completely down

Hi webflyer people,

The home.webflyer.com server (I know it's actually hosted by urbanite and not by you folks) has been very slow if not completely down during the last couple of days. Could you guys investigate please? (i.e. complain that something bearing your name works so poorly? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif )

Thanks,
FewMiles..

Yes, it was a bit slow, particularly yesterday, for me!

dan at WebFlyer May 10, 2001 9:50 am

Actually folks, it looks like those pages will be going away soon.

Urbanite, the company that provides the service, has decided to radically change their business model, in light of the changing internet economy. This change has made it impossible for WebFlyer to keep offering this service, even if we were to start charging for it (and we don't want to do that).

I was actually establishing a list of our homepage members in order to blast out a notice of this today when I came across this post. I'll still send that notice out today or early tomorrow, but consider this an advance warning.

Free services seem to be dropping like flies, and I apologize for this sudden notice, but we were informed late in the game.

We have been informed that our homepages will be turned off May 19th. The fact that their servers seem to be suddenly crawling makes me a little nervous that things are already going on behind the scenes.

I would advise looking for a new free home or at least archiving your pages on your computers in case the performance continues to degrade or outright fail.

FewMiles May 10, 2001 10:50 am

Dan, thanks for the quick reply and the warning. I will start searching for a new "home" for my website ASAP.

FewMiles..

Well, I managed to move all my website stuff to tripod.

Dan, thanks again for the heads up. On behalf of all the homepage users, please give Urbanite big heck for all this! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/mad.gif

Slow Today!

Seems to be agonizingly slow today! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

LEB Jul 11, 2001 3:33 pm

Same problem here. I wasn't seeing any modem lights so I was wondering if it was just causing IE (6.0) to thrash while formatting the page.

JRF Jul 11, 2001 6:05 pm

Very Very Very slow here and I am on DSL.

airbus320 Jul 11, 2001 7:37 pm

Same problem experienced here in Canada.

FewMiles Jul 11, 2001 9:39 pm

A bit better now, though still a bit sluggish.
