Two potential action items, imminent deadlines

Retroactive credit window halving; act before March 1
A little-noticed aspect of RR 2.0 is that the window for claiming retroactive flight credit is halving, from 24 months to 12 months. As explained at Last chance for old retro credit (12+ months), you must act before March 1st to receive retroactive credit for flights taken more than 12 months ago. With the MySouthwest transition outage set to begin, you may need to submit all retroactive credit requests by phone to beat the deadline.
Lucrative RR Visa offer(s) ending
As reported by bruinfan90, the page advertising the lucrative 16 credit / $500 gift card / first year free RR Visa offer has disappeared from mychasecreditcards.com. If you really wanted that offer you can, at least for now, still use the online application page at the following URL:
Code:
https://applynowdc1.chase.com/FlexAppWeb/renderApp.do?SPID=CYJZ
That page could also disappear at any moment, and there is no guarantee that Chase will still honor the offer. If you decide to try it, be sure to save a screen capture or printout of the offer and contact Chase to confirm the offer terms before using the new card. Recall that this offer requires $5,000 spending within 90 days of account opening to earn the gift cards. Note that the page describing the similar offer that lacked the fee waiver is still "live." Separately, the two free flights offer is still being advertised, but it is specifically described as a limited-time opportunity, so it may not last much longer.

Of course nobody can accurately predict whether Chase will roll out more lucrative or less lucrative offers with the arrival of RR 2.0.
Update: The direct link to the application page for the two free flights offer is:
Code:
https://applynowdc1.chase.com/FlexAppWeb/renderApp.do?CELL=68ND&PROMO=DF01&SPID=D9Q2
The direct link to the Denver Special Offer application no longer mentions the $500 of gift cards, so it is not included here.

Schedule opening this morning through November 4, 2011

Southwest will open the bookings this morning through November 4, 2011. Since Ding does a decent job of notification shortly after the fact, our new moderator ftnoob suggested that we use this newsflash to give people a reminder shortly before the schedule opens. We would appreciate feedback on whether you, the readers, regard this as an improvement.

In other news, the roll-out of the new Rapid Rewards has not been rapid or smooth. The following southwest.com website implementation issues may still cause you trouble:

Firefox compatibility. If you are using a version other than 3.6.15, you should read this post: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...l#post16013677

Rolling qualification for A-list and CP appears to be different from prior practice and deficient in three ways: (a) you only receive rolling qualification information in RR email, probably monthly; (b) you can no longer get a detailed list of your earning activity for the past year to do the computation yourself; and (c) rolling qualification is not being computed daily, and it is reportedly planned to occur only at the end of each month. If you qualify mid-month to mid-month but not month-end to month-end, of if you are in a hurry to enjoy your benefits, you will need to make a phone call to RR 214-932-0333. See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...mail-only.html

Rolling qualification for A-List Preferred was never promised and may not occur at all. If it does, it will likely be on the same schedule evaluating as the other types of rolling qualification. See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...12-months.html

Companion Pass expiration dates are sometimes shown differently on the two spots on the website. Post cards delivered to notify members of recent qualification still show now-incorrect mid-year expiration dates. See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...-rr-2-0-a.html

There are reports that standard awards are sometimes not being redeposited when award travel is canceled. This behavior is not consistent and may be rare. See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...cellation.html

There are reports that blackout dates are being enforced when booking standard awards. This behavior appears to be consistent and is definitely an error. However the change reservation pages appear not to have this limitation, so you may be able to book your standard award on an available date then change it to a "blackout" date. See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...cellation.html

Oops error messages at the last step when booking standard awards may be fixed now: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...one-hitch.html

Boarding Pass ranking for A-List and A-List Preferred was erroneous last week. It may or may not be working as intended now, but it appears to be working differently than before. See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...ed-roster.html

If you want to book a custom connection on a standard award, see the useful trick in this thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...l#post15967373

As of today, ticketless travel funds remain transferable. At some point in the future they will become locked to the current passenger name, probably without any warning.

Perhaps as a consolation gift for all the website troubles, Southwest could bring back the pillows and blankets...

24-month award revival is back! (For old awards only)

Finally we have an item of good news to report on Rapid Rewards.

As we notified you in this thread on February 9 and again on February 26, the ability to pay $50 to re-issue expired awards was curtailed on March 1. Starting March 1 only awards that expired within the past 12 months (reduced from 24 months) could be re-issued.

Because of numerous complaints, presumably about the stealth nature of this change, Southwest has decided to re-open the window for re-issuing standard awards to 24 months after they expire. Your older awards should now appear in the online list of awards available for re-issuance.

This does not change the fact that any award issued or re-issued on or after March 1, 2011 cannot be extended or re-issued. When those newer awards expire, that's the end of them. Only pre-March 2011 awards have special status.

In other news, Southwest's acquisition of AirTran is now scheduled to close on May 2. AirTran will continue to operate as a separate subsidiary for some time, perhaps past the end of 2011. Southwest will be free to make announcements about the frequent flier program transition after May 2, but the timing will be up to them.

On May 24, Southwest's computers are scheduled to crash for 24 hours in conjunction with an extension of the booking schedule through January 6, 2012. This extension is the big one, covering both Thanksgiving and Christmas. You have to wonder at the undiminished faith that Southwest has in the ability of its servers to handle sustained high web traffic.

Schedule opening this morning to January 6, 2012

"The big one" is upon us: WN flights for the busy Thanksgiving/Christmas/Chanukah, (Festivus?) holidays are scheduled to become bookable on 24-May-2011. Remember that the old "around 10:00 AM Central" policy no longer applies. Presumably as a strategy to avoid the expense of deploying adequate server resources, recent schedule openings are estimated to have occurred in the 6:00 AM (Herb Time/aka Central Time) hour. If you need to book at the earliest possible instant, you'll need to glue yourself to your computer and constantly refresh the flight search page. To avoid any nasty Master Session Timeout surprises, you should also plan to delete southwest.com cookies every 10 minutes or so. Note: it is best not to log in first! You may encounter booking problems and inconsistent behavior due to website overload.

In other news, the feared permanent locking of Ticketless Travel Funds to one passenger has come to pass. Implementation had been postponed indefinitely. That turned out to be until April 29, 2011.

In other software enhancements, Southwest made some website changes that killed our ability to use portable Ding URLs to access those sales. Within a few days our own ftnoob had the situation in hand with a new bookmarklet that works from your existing portable Ding URL.

ftnoob continues to work on other improvements to the Southwest website.

The moderators are conducting an experiment in the Southwest forum called the Official Food Fighting Thread. Its goal is to allow people who love to denigrate Southwest and its customers to have all the fun they want without devaluing the reading experience for others. The Food Fight thread is a bit of a free-fire zone, but, like a real-life food fight, it can be a lot of fun if get into the spirit of it. Ability to creatively exaggerate is a plus.

Posts in other threads that are content-free flame bait will be quickly moved into the Food Fight thread, proving a renewable source of new throwing material.

$40/$80/$120 Anniversary Sale for Travel 8/23-11/16

Southwest launched a $40/$80/$120 Anniversary Sale this morning, as shared by our friend diablonhn. Like previous years' late summer/fall "wow" sales, fares depend on distance. This sale ends 11:59 PDT June 23, 2011, so act fast!

Schedule opening imminient (moved up to MONDAY)

The schedule opening that lightly grazes the start of the busy Spring Break travel period is upon us, moved up from the previously projected Tuesday, 26-March to Monday, 25-March. Presumably the recent trend of pre-dawn schedule openings will continue, so if you are hot under the collar to burn off some RR 1.x SAs in this time frame, limber up your keyboarding and mousing muscles and head on over to southwest.com ASAP Monday morning.

Elsewhere:

*** BREAKING NEWS ***
The August issue of Inside Flyer magazine has a story looking at RR 2.0 and it has very recently become available available online. This brand new thread could become rather interesting quite soon!
*** END BREAKING NEWS ***

In case you missed any of these threads or tidbits, other recent news of note on the old 501 includes:
  • There is a limited time offer (reportedly ending 06-Aug) for 50,000 RR points on first use of the RR Premier Visa. The offer has been discussed on our forum as well as on MilesBuzz.
  • As first reported by toomanybooks, through 31-Aug Hyatt has a very attractive promo offering the chance to earn up to 19,000 RR points.
  • If you need a points-earning hotel room after the sweet Hyatt offer ends, or somewhere lacking a property in the Hyatt family, take a look at the Marriott 4x (starting 2nd stay) promo or the La Quinta 2x promo. See the RR promotions page at southwest.com...which also mentions recent flying promos for DEN, and PHL...but not the targeted BS promos mentioned in the forum nor the HHonors 2x promo announced via Email.
  • Everybody's favorite SWA CEO, Herb Kelleher, has been in the news twice recently. He was interviewed by AP and featured on a CNBC Titans program. Visit the HK CNBC Titans web page for some related articles as well as a couple "web extra" videos.
  • Inside Flyer Managing Editor Lynda Hanwella interviewed Chris Herndon, SWA's "Sr. Manager Loyalty Marketing" Director for the article mentioned above in *BREAKING NEWS*. Your forum moderators suggested she ask Chris about the company's apparent abandonment of support of their FT customers. Soon after Lynda did just that, we were delighted to learn that a group of SWA customer relations representatives had been assigned to participate in our forum, apparently with far-reaching authority to quickly address customer service issues. The results thus far have been very impressive, with several examples of drawn out ordeals being resolved quite expediently. As a result, your FT membership now carries a new and very valuable benefit: the ability to contact an SWA Customer Relations employee via FT private message for personal attention regarding your concern! Yes, that means you can bypass the constant SWA Customer Relations busy signals and interminable wait times, as well as SWA's rather lame online contact system!!!
  • We encourage you to head on over to the Welcome aboard thread to learn a bit more about Gabe, Verity, and Whit(ney) (et. al.?), each of whom has a profile page on blogsouthwest.com.
  • On a related note, SWABrian has informed us he has new duties that seem superbly suited to his interests and skills. Read his announcement at: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...-swabrian.html If you haven't been following SWA's blog, or in particular Brian's Flashback Friday series, take an amazing journey back to the very early days of SWA's reservations department via the text and very old photos at the entry titled "Thank You for Calling Southwest Airlines."
  • SWA's web site continues to break down in more ways than even the most hardened cynic could possibly imagine, witch, oops, which probably explains why one awesome bit of good news escaped nearly everyone's attention: The Wicked Witch (aka the horrific city flyout box) has at last been slayed!

Unusual (holiday) SWA schedule extension imminent

SWA is still indicating their schedule will be extended on Monday, September 5, the Labor Day holiday. The new last bookable date is supposed to be April 9, 2012.

If recent history holds you will have to be a real early bird on the holiday if you want the worm. On the other hand, perhaps the holiday opening will serve as an alternative way to spread the load such that the pre-dawn opening won't be necessary. A remote third possibility is that SWA expects this opening to create so much demand that both the holiday and early hour will be needed to avoid a system meltdown.

Oops: Schedule extended yesterday (Sunday)

Southwest loaded its new flight schedule, through August 10, 2012, at about 3 PM Central Time on Sunday November 13. This was a day earlier than originally announced, an advance that was noted by FT member Denise W on November 7 but which I forgot about. On Sunday I was preoccupied attempting to evade a massive devaluation of British Airways Executive Club miles when the new redemption scheme takes effect Wednesday.

The next schedule extension is projected to occur on January 16, 2012, for travel through September 28, 2012. Since January 16 is a Monday again, look for an extension occurring mid-day on Sunday the 15th or early in the morning (about 6:30 AM Central Time) on Monday.

In other news:

1. The option to apply for an AirTran credit card and earn a sign-up bonus that might later transfer to Rapid Rewards disappeared a few days ago, just a month before I planned to do that.
See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/airtr...visa-gone.html

2. Check your Rapid Rewards account to see if you can sign up for a double points promotion first posted by FT member FindAWay. It gives you double points for Chicago to/from California from 11/09/2011 to 03/31/2012.
See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...31-2012-a.html

3. Southwest's web site now displays actual departure and arrival times for past flights on the flight status page. We've been asking for this for years!

4. FT member mritty has noticed that the explicit allowance of hidden city ticketing has been dropped from Southwest's Customer Service Commitment. This occured during the last 12 months according to research by ftnoob. We don't know why the language was changed, because there appears to be no policy change.
See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...y-allowed.html

5. FT member Peter Silberman noted a change in the Contract of Carriage that allows Southwest to cancel the rest of your itinerary if you no-show a flight. If you needed it, here is another reason to book your trips as one-way reservations.
See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...ge-change.html

6. FT member 707Flyer writes that Southwest is considering adding 4 seats to the standard 137-seat configuration. One row will be added forward of 11ABC and one seat will be added at 11F. The new seats will be thinner, so that current legroom will be preserved even with the extra row. The exit row legroom for 11ABC and 12F will of course decrease dramatically.
See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...300-700-a.html

7. Last but not least, FT member iahphx tells us how to get $25 off a round trip on Southwest for travel through January 30, 2012. You need 7 day advance purchase and blackouts are Nov 22-29 and Dec 15-Jan 2. Travel can be anywhere on the system. It's not restricted to trips to and from Florida. Also, you should allow several days, up to a week, to receive the discount code by email.

Schedule now open through September 28, 2012

Southwest opened bookings this morning through September 28, 2012. Ding has not yet announced the opening. The travel tools page does not yet show a date for the next extension.

In other news:

1. Southwest has announced plans to re-fit its newer aircraft, the 737-700's, with an additional row of seats. Seat pitch will be reduced to 31 inches, the exit row gap will be reduced 8 inches or so, recline will be reduced 1 inch, and the seat cushion thickness will be reduced. Southwest claims that this will result in increased rather than decreased knee room. The 4% increase in seats per flight may reduce upward pressure on fares and increase pressure on overhead storage bins.

2.Hilton HHonors became the latest partner to walk away from Southwest in the wake of the new Rapid Rewards program. Points transfers from HHonors were never very attractive. The award option to redeem 350k points for a companion pass and 6 free trips was a great deal, but that opportunity ended years ago. Point transfers from HHonors ended December 31, 2011. All requested transfers were posted with 2011 effective dates. If you preferred a 2012 date for Companion Pass qualification, apparently a phone call is sufficient to move the points into 2012. As to why so many partners have left Southwest this year, I can only surmise that Southwest wanted to charge them too much for RR points.

3. Chase Ultimate Rewards points (from their Sapphire, Ink and Bold cards) can now be transferred to Rapid Rewards. That's the good news. The bad news is that these points will not count toward your Companion Pass qualification. FTer djschex tried it and verified this on January 5, 2012, the very first day.

4. Scam operators are attempting to impersonate Southwest Rapid Rewards by taking advantage of telephone misdialing and by using snail mail.

5. FT member FindAWay recevied a mysterious promotion for double tier qualifying points that has blank terms and conditions. Your mileage may vary.

6. If the crossword puzzle in your in-flight magazine is already completed, you can amuse yourself by counting the peanuts in each bag and reporting your findings on FT. I know, it's just plane nuts (apologies to Herb Kelleher).

7. The 50,000 point signup bonus for Southwest Visa cards is back. These points count toward Companion Pass qualification, as they always have.

Schedule now open through November 2, 2012; Holiday extension coming on May 21

From the Travel Tools page:

We are currently accepting air reservations through November 2, 2012. On May 21, 2012, we will open our schedule for sale through January 4, 2013.
In other news, Southwest is gradually changing over to a new flight selection page. It appears that some servers are running the new software and other servers are running the old software. For now there's no telling which version you'll get. Join the discussion at
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...gn-layout.html

Don't forget that the May 21 schedule extension is the big one, covering Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you are one of the few who have have standard awards to use, this will likely be your only opportunity to book them on or near peak dates. No guarantees, but you will want to take your best shot at it. By May 21 we may have techniques available which will allow you to check award seat availability before you activate your dormant standard awards.

New option to exhange AirTran and Southwest credits

AirTran A+ Rewards credits and Southwest Rapid Rewards credits became exchangeable on Thursday, April 19. See all the official details at the special transition website: http://www.rewardsfarther.com

After you login to My Southwest, there is now a transfer option under the My Rapid Rewards tab at https://www.southwest.com/account/ra...transfer-login

Credits and awards cannot be changed into points. This is consistent with Southwest's transition to Rapid Rewards 2.0, in which old credits were stranded unless you could rescue them by using points to reach a total of 16 credits.

However we now have the opportunity to create Standard Awards by transferring points to AirTran then back to Rapid Rewards. This is a very welcome and valuable feature for members needing short-notice award travel.

See the FlyerTalk discussion at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...s-merging.html

ftnoob notes that you can use transfers to break a Freedom Award into two Standard Awards.

Conversions cannot help you earn a Companion Pass since they don't count as earned points.

If you intend to use transfers to create standard awards, I suggest you act sooner rather than later. Although the new options are wonderful, Southwest might decide that they are being too generous.

In other news, Southwest has decided to reverse the conversion of some ATL flights, switching them back from Southwest to AirTran. See http://www.ajc.com/business/southwes...a-1406021.html

The Thanksgiving and Christmas schedule will open on June 4, delayed from the originally planned May 21, presumably due to AirTran integration challenges.

Watch for the holiday schedule extension very early Monday morning June 4

Last July 25 there was a Monday schedule extension at about 5:30AM Central Time, so I expect approximately the same timing on tomorrow morning's extension through January 4, 2013. That means getting up early if you want to score Standard Award seats during the holiday period.

Also, be aware that the schedule opening may not activate on all Southwest's servers at the same time. Reloading the web page may put you on a different server, opening or perhaps even closing the schedule extension. You know the drill for dealing with southwest.com: Patience, patience, patience.

In other news:

1. Our prolific ftnoob has split his Website Tips thread into one for tips:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...ival-odds.html
and another for comments and feedback:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...lp-thread.html

2. The ultra-generous 50,000 point signup bonus for RR Visa cards has expired:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/south...l#post18631567
There are reports that targeted 50,000 point offers continue, so be sure to check your email and Spam folders.

3. Be alert for an anniversary sale 2 to 3 weeks from now. These sales typically last 3 days, from Tuesday through Thursday. They tend to be the best prices of the year, good for travel through a wide range of fall dates. Some people use these sales to look for price match deals from other airlines and even to build mileage runs based on those price matches.

4. This seems as good a place as any to remind readers that travel funds are now locked to one passenger name, but points are not locked. You can always cancel a points reservation and the points will go back into your account for use by any traveler. Point reservations are the antidote for locking of ticketless funds. If you aren't certain whether an infrequent traveler will take a trip, such as one of these anniversary sale fares, book it with points!

5. Summer fares on Southwest are bound to be higher than ever, so re-check your fares frequently. Sometimes the fare will drop to a more reasonable level even within the last 2 weeks before flight. When this happens, use the Change Reservation link
http://www.southwest.com/travel_cent...Itinerary.html
under Travel Tools to "change" to the same flight. You will get a travel credit or, for a points reservation, the surplus points will be immediately credited to your RR account.

6. The transfer option between AirTran and Southwest remains in place. If you have not done so, please learn about using this option to create new Standard Awards if you need them, e.g., for last-minute travel.
