Editorial comment: When Southwest devalues points, that tends to occur in the month of April without warning or official announcement. Hedging against devaluation makes this promotion doubly valuable.

In other news, Southwest recently introduced a new fare class called Wanna Get Away Plus which allows free confirmed same day flight changes and transfer of travel funds to another person. This provides one way to avoid loss of your travel funds to expiration.

At the same time, Southwest added a new benefit for A-List and A-List Preferred members, who can now call in on the date of travel for a free confirmed change to a later flight or an earlier flight, even if only the Wanna Get Away fare was paid. However the internal software to accomplish this is not operational, making the changes slow and difficult to accomplish.

Speaking of loosening up on expiration, Southwest has thrown us yet another gift. From June 1 to December 31, 2022 we will be able to call Southwest to extend travel credits which have expired or will soon expire. Your replacement travel credit will have 6 months of life. This is great news for anyone with a pile of travel credits and no plan to use them. See the discussion at

There may be opportunities to use a WGA+ fare to change the name on a travel credit before getting the 6-month extension. This is all new territory.

A-list members get this benefit on regular Wanna Get Away fares, although it currently requires a phone call and some agents haven't gotten the memo. On July 28, Southwest surprised us by eliminating expiration of travel funds. You no longer need to keep track of expiration dates. Be sure to convert your LUV voucher to travel funds before the voucher expires. This relaxed policy makes cash bookings essentially risk-free.
