Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What’s a Promotional Companion Pass®?
A: Promotional Companion Pass earned through this offer allows you to designate one person to fly with, free of airline charges (does not include taxes and fees from $5.60 one-way) on flights purchased and flown between January 8, 2024 and March 8, 2024.

Q: What’s considered a qualifying flight(s)?
A: A qualifying flight includes revenue flights paid entirely with dollars, Southwest LUV Vouchers®, gift cards, or travel funds, and with no portion of the purchase price paid for with Rapid Rewards® points. Qualifying flights must be booked after registering for the promotion and before 11:59 p.m. CDT August 30, 2023.

Q: Does a flight I booked prior to registration count toward qualification for the Companion Pass promotion?
A: No. Qualifying flights must be booked after you register between August 28 and 11:59 p.m. CDT August 30, 2023.

Q: What will happen after I meet the requirements to earn Promotional Companion Pass through this offer?
A: Once you qualify for Promotional Companion Pass (meaning you registered, booked, and traveled on a qualifying round trip or two one-way flight(s) during the applicable dates specified in the promotion terms and conditions), we’ll send an email within 10 days. This email lets you know you qualified (woo-hoo!) and includes information on next steps and how to designate and utilize the Promotional Companion Pass once it is available in your account (January 8, 2024).

Q: What changes to a reservation would disqualify a flight from qualifying for Promotional Companion Pass through this offer?
A: Any change to a reservation that falls outside of the promotional requirements (registration date, booking date, travel date, etc.) will disqualify the flight from this promotion. In other words, flights must be purchased and/or changed during the promotional period and the new flight(s) must be flown between August 28 and September 30, 2023 to meet the terms and conditions of this promotion.

Q: When can I designate my Companion after earning Promotional Companion Pass through this offer?
A: You’ll be able to designate a Companion after the Promotional Companion Pass is awarded to your account (January 8, 2024).

Q: How can I designate my initial Companion and make changes to my Companion?
A: After the Promotional Companion Pass is awarded to your account (January 8, 2024), you can designate your initial Companion within My Account on Southwest.com® or by calling Southwest at 1-800-435-9792. To change your Companion, you must call 1-800-435-9792.

Q: How many times can I change my designated Companion?
A: You may change your designated Companion up to three times during the Promotional Companion Pass period. If you achieve Companion Pass in 2024 by earning 135,000 Companion Pass qualifying points or flying 100 qualifying one-way flights, any changes to the designated Companion during the time you have a Promotional Companion Pass will reduce the number of changes you can make to your designated Companion in the 2024 calendar year. For example, if you earned a Promotional Companion Pass through this promotion, changed your designated Companion twice during the validity period for Promotional Companion Pass, and then later in 2024 earned a Companion Pass, you would only be able to change your designated Companion one more time in 2024.

Q: If I book a reservation prior to January 8, 2024 for travel between January 8-March 8, 2024, when can I book my Companion’s reservation?
A: After the Promotional Companion Pass has been awarded to your account (January 8, 2024), and you’ve designated your Companion, you can book your Companion’s reservation (subject to flight capacity and availability at the time of booking the Promotional Companion Pass).

Q: If I book a reservation for myself for travel between January 8 and March 8, 2024 using points, can my Companion travel with me?
A: Yes, you can use your Rapid Rewards points to book any flight(s) and enjoy the benefits of bringing your plus one from January 8 and March 8, 2024.

The Promotional Companion Pass is valid from January 8, 2024 and March 8, 2024 and allows you to designate one person to fly with you, free of airline charges (does not include taxes and fees from $5.60 one-way) on flights purchased by you, from January 8, 2024 and March 8, 2024, booked through Southwest, and completed between January 8, 2024 and March 8, 2024. No Rapid Rewards points or tier or Companion Pass qualifying points will be awarded for flights taken by the Companion when flying on a Promotional Companion Pass or Companion Pass reservation. You may change your designated Companion up to three times while you have Promotional Companion Pass. If you earn Companion Pass in 2023 by earning 135,000 Companion Pass qualifying points or flying 100 qualifying flights, any changes to your designated Companion during the time you have a Promotional Companion Pass will reduce the number of changes you can make to your designated Companion in the 2024 calendar year. For example, if you earn a Promotional Companion Pass through this promotion, change your designated Companion twice during the validity period for Promotional Companion Pass, and later in 2024 earn Companion Pass, you would only be able to change your designated Companion one more time in 2024. Southwest reserves the right to amend, suspend, or change the Rapid Rewards program and/or Rapid Rewards program rules at any time without notice. Rapid Rewards Members do not acquire property rights in accrued points. The number of points needed for a particular Southwest flight is set by Southwest and will vary depending on destination, time, day of travel, demand, fare type, point redemption rate, and other factors, and is subject to change at any time until the booking is confirmed.

I'm sure people have been through my situation before so any advice please. I have 2 one-ways already purchased that I will fly in the required time period, but no other plans to fly during that time. So,

1) I assume I can cancel and rebook, thus qualify? Using flight credit from the cancellation to pay for the new flight (I will assess the difference, if any, and if it's worth it).

2) On one of my one-ways, in the same reservation I purchased an additional ticket for my wife, both flying to Seattle. Can I cancel ONLY myself and leave her ticket intact? What are the downsides of "decoupling" our flight in this way?

Thanks in advance.

It's not targeted. It's front and center on the homepage.

1. Yes.
2. I can't speak from experience, but I don't see why not. The only real downside I see is that you will have to check in twice.

Do you have to fly?

Do you actually have to board either of these flights to qualify? Or can you just buy two $49 one-ways?

This promotion is designed for the last minute bookings that don't mind paying high fares. Many of my September tickets are $29 instead of the $114 fare offered today or the $63 offered last week. So I'm paying an extra $170 for a 2-month CP. Or I could do a MR for $90 RT last week of Sep and pay $90 extra for the CP. Historically, I've only been able to use the Jan-Mar promotional CP once a year. No thank you.

Depending on when on Jan or Feb you would be traveling, even $170 could be worth it, especially if travel is around President's Day.

WHEW....I called to cancel my one-way but keep my wife's itinerary booked at same time. I checked immediately before calling that flight was still available for re-booking so I am on the same flight as her. It's STL-SJC-SEA.

After cancellation I immediately log in to book again with travel funds....it's not there. It's not there. In fact the whole page of STL-SEA with connections is only 2/3 as long as it was. There's a similar timed STL-DEN-SEA but more expensive.

Last gasp -- I closed the browser, opened again, re-logged-in. STL-SJC-SEA is there, and at the price I thought it would be. WHEW. Bought.

I must say, SWA's cancellation email and travel funds availability were instantaneous. Same when I did my other flight, canceling online rather than through the agent. Their systems are working well today.

Does the traveler has to the account holder for the round-trip or one-ways? Can I buy a round trip for my spouse who will travel in Sept to quality for this promo?

I'm not an expert but reading the rules above.....

you will need to provide your Southwest Rapid Rewards™ account number at the time of registration.....Member must register for this promotion, book a qualifying Southwest flight between 8:00 a.m. CDT on August 28, 2023 and 11:59 p.m. CDT on August 30, 2023 for travel during the Promotion Period, and fly during the Promotion Period."

Seems to me everything says you can do it for yourself, not others. "Member" must register, book, and fly, says the last sentence.

Whoever is flying gets the CP. It doesn’t really matter who’s name the CC is in.

Thanks! then my next question will be "does it make sense to have two companion passes on the same account"? My spouse already had a companion pass valid throughout next year, so if he registers this promo and flies the round trip, will the additional short-term restricted companion pass bring any value at all? One person "can not" apply two passes at the same time on one reservation to bring two companions free, right?

I have three questions that I didn't see addressed in the T&C or the Q&A:

1) Can I book during the promotional period the qualifying flight that needs to be flown in September via SWABIZ, or does it have to be purchased via Southwest.com?
2) If, on the day of the qualifying flight, I make a SDC to fly a different flight that day, does that disqualify me from the promotion?
3) If, on the day of the qualifying flight, I fly on an earlier flight using the new same-day stand-by rules, does that disqualify me from the promotion?
