- Diamond members receive a complimentary full breakfast for up to 4 guests.
- The beds are very firm platform beds. I saw a few posts where a foam pad for the top of the bed was requested.
- Docked cruise ships that may obstruct the view from the Harbour view rooms.
- The hotel is 4 stories.
The concierge desk offers a weekly tour of the Rocks on Saturday.

The view is arguably even better from an Opera view at the S-L because you get a great panoramic view of the bridge, bay and the Opera House.

If you have an American Express Platinum card, their FHR booking site can offer some great deals at several high end hotels. I believe the Shangri-La is one of them.
In the alternative, there are a number of well-located mid-range hotels if you don't require "luxury"-such as the Intercontinental and the Marriott (one of my favorites).
As others, as will as I, have noted, the PHS can be a very tight-fisted operation.

Sine the other rates are well above our budget (about A$500-600), and since the more I look at the HR the less I'm interested in it, I would love to hear some advice on alternatives.
Right now I'm thinking of going with Virtuoso, mostly considering the IC, followed by the Shangri-La.

The IC club lounge experience is exemplary.

I'm glad to hear something nice about the IC, we can get a 70 m2 suite (mainly so as to get a walk-in shower rather than a bath/shower combo) for A$515, and the Virtuoso benefit is lounge access.
Do you mind my asking why you dislike the S-L. It is more expensive than the IC, and the Virtuoso benefit is not as good, but as Stargold says, the hard product is a lot newer than the IC and the view may be better.
I certainly would have liked to stay at the PH, but I really cannot justify that high a rate. We stayed there twice back in 2001, before the renovation of course, but the rates was A$300/night, including breakfast!

We were nervous about what type of room they would receive since the hotel was full but I needn't have worried.
They got an Opera House view from room 129 and were treated very well.....champagne etc there when they arrived.
LOVE this hotel.
We all gathered yesterday to celebrate in the bar and had the best Bloody Mary's (extra spicy)
Always find the staff helpful , available and unobtrusive.
Our favourite hotel !!!

I booked one night on c+p for 15,000 + AUD $400 for my partner's birthday. I emailed in advance to book dinner in the dining room for 7PM.
Check In
We checked in right at 3PM and were upgraded from the Park King (the hotel used to offer reservations on c+p and points into City/Harbour Kings) to a City/Harbour King.
I had been watching inventory all day and every now and then an Opera King would be available but would disappear just as quickly.
I politely asked if there were any Opera rooms available and the agent did check and said they were all sold out. She mentioned that the duty manager would escort us to the room but he might be a few moments. Typically, we are escorted to our room but after waiting around 5 mins I let her know that we could find it ourself.
Upon arrival we found a handwritten note to the GM correctly addressed to us as Mr and Mr. After countless stays around the World it never ceases to amaze me how many hotels write 'Mr and Mrs' despite me adding my husband's name to the reservation.
Room
Curiously, the room was bigger than the Opera King we had on our last stay. For some reason on this occasion I was wowed by the room finishes. They are elegant and refined.
We had a view of the Overseas Passenger Terminal and the CBD, but on the balcony you could see 3/4 of the Sydney Opera House.
Service
Being a milestone birthday I had emailed the GM in advance (we have met previously) and asked some assistance in marking my partner's birthday.
I asked for the best table for dinner and asked the Concierge Robby some creative ways to deliver his gift.
I was very impressed that they arrange to collect the gift from my car which was valet parked and deliver it with a bottle of Vueve and a cake to mark the occasion. The moment could not have been more special.
Dining
We dined in The Dining Room and the food was outstanding. We had considere the Degustation or 'Feed Meed' menu with matching wines but there were too many crustacea dishes that my partner is allergic to.
We chose the Burrata which we loved on our last stay, the Angus steak which at $120 for two isn't cheap but well worth the price and finished with the Pavlova and Sorbets.
The waitress was delightful and accidentally ordered the wrong dessert so we ended up with three in total plus another birthday cake. The cocktails were very, very good and the service impeccable given the restaurant was full.
After we finished dinner the front desk agent that checked us in ran up to us to say that we have been waiting to deliver us our birthday amenity and would we mind it being delivered so late. We said no and they delivered another bottle of Vueve and another cake! Curiously this happened when we last stayed on my birthday as well!
The only negative was the hotel has done away with tableclothes for 'environmental puposes,' but the reality is that the wooden tables get covered in water residue from cold drinks meaning it ends up on your sleeves and will no doubt rot the wood eventually.
At breakfast we were immediately seated to a window table.
We ordered two servings of the Eggs Benedict and Buttermilk Pancakes for breakfast and were served with a $0 bill. The coffee was the best I have ever had in any hotel stay.
Location
As everyone knows the location could not be better in Sydney. You pay for the view and the PHS remains the best hotel Sydney has to offer.
Rooftop pool
We spent Sunday lazing by the rooftop pool which was delightul. The staff serve fruit skewers and cold towels to guests and we ordered a number of mocktails. I presume because of the occasion and my status as a VIP2 at the property we were served an equal amount of free mocktails as what we paid for.
The poolboy did offer us a bottle of Champagne but we declined.
Overall
Overall, I was very impressed with this stay and for the first time made me feel like the PHS is a true luxury hotel.
Everyone greeted us by name, wished my husband a happy birthday and the Concierge really made his birthday special.

I found that the size of the room varies depending on which part of the building it is at. At the City View side, where the building is on a straight line, the walls are parallel.
On the Opera side, where the hotel has curves, the room walls will either diverge as you go towards the terrace, or converge together, depending on whether it is the convex or concave part of the curve.
I had a room on the concave part of the curve (i.e. walls converging as you go towards the terrace) and found that it felt pretty small and quite dark. I would guess that you had the same last time.
I don't have the floor plan to hand, but I would imagine that the width of the room at the corridor is the same, so a City view room with parallel walls will feel noticeably larger than the Opera view that I had (as your photos also suggest).
