Chase now has a UA offer. The account opening is still 10k, but no 15k bonus for a debit card...
EDIT: Although I noticed this little nugget in the T&C: "This exclusive offer is by invitation only and the bonus miles will be awarded to the United Mileage Plus customer who received this communication directly from Chase." EDIT#2: Oh this keeps getting more and more interesting. Another sign of things to come hidden in the T&C?? It says "The bonus miles will be deposited into your United Mileage Plus account by 1/31/2011 if your initial direct deposit posts to your account by 1/15/11; otherwise your bonus points will post to your United Mileage Plus account by 5/1/2011." It makes me wonder if something big on the back end side is happening between 1/31/2011 and 5/1/2011. Seems like a long time to delay miles posting. |
It sounds like you have to be invited and in order to be invited you have to have the United Mileage Plus Visa card. Still, 10,000 miles just to open a free checking account is a good deal. I'm staying away from Chase credit cards for a while.

IMHO, there is no empirical evidence to support this statement.
Just some "disinformation" from the American Bankers Assn, etc. to attack regulation. First, the evidence is pretty clear to anyone who goes looking for checking accounts (banks that used to have it, leaving aside credit unions, don't any more, without much more restrictive terms that create revenue for them in other ways.) Is it a study? No, but it's pretty clear considering how much of the desposits the big banks that I do know control. Second, why would the banks be saying that free checking is disappearing to avoid regulation? If real regulation were in place, that could be one of the targets? Yeah they're saying it, but it's chest thumping that they're being successul doing what banks do (making money). And that's probably as much bank regulation policy as we need to go through here, no? why is Chase clamping down on debit cards?
The Fed’s bold move on debit interchange Basically, big card issuers won’t be able to charge more than 12 cents per transaction for debit-card purchases, and under one alternative their fees might be kept as low as 7 cents per transaction. That’s a massive reduction from the levels we’re seeing right now, which can range as high as 2 percent. This is a victory for Dodd-Frank, a :confused:victory for consumers:confused:, and above all a victory for merchants over the financial-services industry. |

You can thank the Fed & Dodd-Frank. It's not profitable for Chase to buy miles if Debit nets less than 1%.

MyTravels, would you be willing to share how you found out about this? Did you get an email from them? Have you had a Chase Checking account before?

Mr. Bergy Bits and I each opened a BusinessClassic Checking and a Premier checking as well as business and personal credit cards, all at the same time at the bank.
On the personalized account summary we received for the BusinessClassic, ways to avoid a monthly service fee include (among others) linking to a Premier checking OR linking to an active Chase business credit card (fee waived on the credit card for the first year, 20K mile bonus). We were told either eliminates the need for the debit transactions (beyond what's required to meet the debit card bonus). On the personalized account summary we received for the Premier checking, ways to avoid a monthly service fee include (among others) linking to a qualifying checking account (which is the BusinessClassic account). We were told this eliminates the need for the debit transactions (beyond what's required to meet the debit card bonus). I was prepared to park a reasonable minimum balance or do the debit transactions but was told these weren't necessary. If you dont, the first 60 days you would not see the fee because Chase waives it for the first 60 days. However you WILL see the fee if you dont do the 5 debit card transactions starting the 3rd month - that is what the banker told me. She upgraded the regular checking to Premium Checking when we opened the business accounts a month after the personal accounts, and told us this eliminated the 5 debit card transaction requirement on the personal account side, and we only need to do that on the business account side. It isn't too hard for me to do all 10 transactions in the first 2 weeks of the month. I just did 2 on each account this afternoon at a Walgreen by purchasing 4 tomato sauce can at 0.34 each. :) I would rather do it this way than be surprised by a fee later. YMMV. |
I payed five times at Verizon.com using my Continental business. My account now shows five Pos Debits from Verizon.
Does Pos Debit mean non-pin transaction? Thanks! |

Avoid a monthly service fee: Maintain required minimum monthly balance OR Link to a Chase Premium Checking or Chase Premier Platinum Checking OR Link to an active Chase business credit card OR Have 5 or more debit card purchases post each statement period (excludes ATM and cash advance transactions). The bolding occurs on the account summary, the English is simple enough, and I questioned her in person as well. Since I am linked to a Chase Premium checking AND have the business credit card, I'm confident I have met two of the four ways to avoid a monthly fee. Quoted from the Chase website: Products and services described as well as associated fees, charges, interest rates and balance requirements may differ among different geographic locations. This in itself may explain some of the differences that people have reported. |
