base on my experience, German trains seldomly are on time, I have missed so many rail connections that I cannot even count. This one I was on was from ZRH to STR, and the train just stopped in Schaffhausen at the border for 30 minutes and then we were requested to get off the train as it was cancelled. then everyone had to take another S-bahn to connect to a bus to cross into German border to take another train, which departed way later and was slower, which shrank my arrival time at STR from 2hr before schedule to 15 minutes. At a few points I could have taken the taxi but it would just be marginally faster due to traffic, and the border between Switzerland and Germany is not exactly populated so getting a taxi from there would be difficult.
I never mentioned anything about EF, but the agent kept referring it as "your ticket is exceptionally cheap and there are many restrictions", and "it is an error in the system and you have very few options."

(Bearing in mind living in Australia I still have a very high opinion of train networks in Europe- for a start they exist )

Last year, returning from AMS to BRU via railway, due to strong winds - and then trees on the tracks - we stopped in a village out of Antwerp with no estimated time for re-departure. If that was the train to take the trip's first flight it would have been a big problem... On that experience we decided we will always take any train before the last useful one, even if it will means to arrive 3h or 4h early at the airport. Better early than sorry.

Quick update from my HAJ-HEL-CAN experience a couple of days ago.

No problem with online check-in for my HAJ-HEL flight as there was 26 hours for my onward flight. For my flight to CAN I didn’t try to bypass the visa question, so I thought I do it at the airport. However, on the day of departure, I received an sms from Finnair that they automatically checked me in. Boarding pass was available in the Finnair app.

At the gate I was asked to show my onward connection for the TWOV. In my case I was connecting on a KE flight to Incheon a couple of hours later. No further questions asked. After landing I decided to test if I could do an airside transfer (carry-on only). I walked straight to the CZ Priority desk (my mistake as I thought it was marked SkyPriority ) and told them I just arrived from Helsinki and connecting to Incheon. They called up someone from Finnair to come over and help me with my transfer. Don’t know why they needed someone from Finnair. Anyway, I was asked to take a seat while they took my passport and itineraries. Normally I don’t want to handover my passport if it is not needed, but my experience with China is that you better give it if you want to continue your journey as fast as possible.
The representative of Finnair provided me every few minutes with an update. In the end it only took me just under 40 minutes to get from the Finnair plane to the China Southern lounge. Probably the most relaxed transit I’ve ever done in China.

A very sound decision! I have missed 2 planes in my life and that is two too many!!!

Ever since golden rule is to aim for 3 hrs before flight at the minimum, and have never gone wrong since.

I have to agree unfortunately and so sorry to hear that you missed the flight. Having lived in both Switzerland and Germany, I have to say that German public transport in no goddamn measure could ever compare to that of Switzerland... I would never count on Deutsche Bahn to be on time. This level of reliability sadly goes for a lot of other stuff, especially public services, in Germany. I know saying that infrastructure in Germany (especially the former West) is crumbling is probably an exaggeration but it is really getting closer to that state if investment continues to lag behind. Having said that, I too would personally not take the last possible train just to give it some buffer should things go wrong... I even do this in Switzerland where trains are generally on time.

I would love to take a train that gives me 3 hour in the airport as well because I would love to check out some lounges. However, options on this route is rather limited, either arrive 2hour before or 4.5hour before, and most EU lounge policies only cover 3 hours so I would choose the 2hour train again if I were put in the same situation.

Does anyone know if you can get from CAN Terminal 1 to CAN Terminal 2 in under 2hrs 25 mins?

@beyounged. Sorry to hear what's happened. Did you manage to cancel all your subsequent hotel bookings in time?

2.5 hour can be a bit tricky sometimes if the immigration gives you trouble, also if you do transit then you should be okay, but barely.
I had one night in HEL and did not get in time to cancel. On the Chinese side it is okay, I just had to change a flight as I am based in PVG. My big problems are: I am not getting money back, and also my return is just gone, which I already booked everything around, including a later flight to YVR from FRA.

I'm too risk averse. Paper/electronic book or movies on phone while seated somewhere inside the airport, and 1.30 hours or even two are not a problem to wait for the check-in to open, having the peace of mind to be already there.

P.S.
Regarding the 3h limit per lounge in EU, did you mean priority pass ones?

some lounges are for 3 hours regardless, not sure about STR's AY partner lounge, just 1 month ago I was in BCN with BA J and the OW lounge denied me entry because I was there 3.5 hours before departure.

Ah, ok. Never happened to me, and from what I have read around should be more an exception than a rule.

Transit T1 to T2 in CAN on different tickets - my experience

Here is my experience:

Arrived early at 6:20 am on China Eastern from BKK for 10:35 am departure to HEL. TWOV / 72- & 144-h-Visa Desk was not open. Used blue forms from TWOV entry on earlier arrival and approached the normal immigration. After looking at the departure time they refused entry and sent us back to the waiting area for TWOV. Somebody would take care. Young lady (Airport representative) appeared after few minutes. Took pictures of onward journey (have it on paper again), passport, checked luggage tags and boarding passes from previous flight. She uploaded it to we chat. And now it was about waiting...

Some Russians were waiting there as well. They arrived around 3 or 4 am from Manila and Kuala Lumpur and where waiting for their 11:50 am SU departure. Waiting area was cold and except for us 6 empty. No international arrivals. Chinese airport representatives only showed up every 20-30 minutes. Everytime somebody showed up the Russians were chasing them and asking when they can move. They told them that the airline check in needs to be open and then the luggage will be collected from the belt at T1, they will be remotely checked in and a SU representative will pick the Pax up. Time was ticking...

We were picked up at around 8:15 am by an AY representative. He accompanied us to a gate far out in T1 and ordered a bus. We were then driven in a large bus to T2 intl. arrivals area (still airside). We had to go through health quarantine where another representative was waiting. We received our boarding passes. She also had the luggage tags printed out in her hand. She was about to check in the luggage through to Stuttgart despite a 27 h layover in HEL. Asked her to short label to HEL which was no problem and we would receive our luggage tags at boarding. She then accompanied us through the transfer area and a security screening to the lounge. Luggage tags were received at boarding. The rest of the journey was smooth. Again no questions asked about the fare.

My take aways for T1 to T2 Connection:
- You will not get a TWOV (which equals going landside) if your pure intention is a transit
- Have your papers ready (printed itinerary, luggage tags, boarding pass - the more paper the better)
- The case of the Russians showed me that even 7 or 8 hours stay (at night / morning) are not sufficient for TWOV
- Be prepared to wait in a cool (20 degree Celsius at the max) area
- Waiting area has only regular seats, Internet and a water dispenser - no entertainment, no shops, no moving around, simply nothing
- Make sure that the airport representative is aware that you are waiting and that they forward your documents
- They will only process you after the regular check in is open - after they open Check in, they need some time to arrange your pickup (so don’t get nervous too early)
- I think it would be handy to have the number of AY CAN station to get in direct contact with them (can anybody provide that for my next trip?)
- Check your new luggage tag on the right destination (HEL or final destination)

Hope that helps.

Once again thank you to OP and everybody contributing.
If AY is reading this: Thanks for offering this promotion and handling the whole journey smoothly. Departure time and pricing permitting, I will be shifting LH biz Travel to you.

Cheers
Topperchris

See my post #463 .

I think it is doable if there is no delay and you immediately make an airport representative aware of your situation in the TWOV area.

Thanks for sharing your experience, TopperChris!

I am scheduled to arrive at Guangzhou T1 after midnight. Hopefully the 24/72 hour TWOV counter is open. Otherwise I approach the regular queue with a filled in blue form. Hopefully they let me through since I have a couple of days in Guangzhou.
