1) you need BA coded flight within USA, not AA and
2) you need that 'I' class is sold out (which is very common for AA JFK-LAX 3 class flights).
Someone very wise at BA (this is RBD 1 controlled by BA, not RBD II controlled by AA) changed the rule for BA I-fares between June this year and now in the following way:
BEFORE: if 'I' class is offered then 'I' class is required, 'A' permitted if 'I' is not offered (ie 2 class scenario only).
NOW: if 'I' class is not available, then 'A' class is permitted

Might have discovered a hint on how to have the 3-class transcons in A (F). Last week when trying to book CAI-LHR-HEL-JFK-LAX-HNL r/t, all tries searching for a return with hubs or flights specified, all dates entered had JFK-LAX v/v in A(F).
Breaking it in multicity, regardless of specifying with flight # or not returned same flights in J. Calling BA , not able to book online, booking fee waived. Changing flight # on LAX-HNL-LAX from to AA to BA increased the price with €4.62 /$5.5 to €1556😂.
Having only BA prefixes on a BA ticket could pose advantageous if crediting to AA

If you can find a flight which satisfies all 3 criteria, then you should end up booked into A (with attendant earning benefits).

AOH, NA-Flyer,
NA-Flyer,
Around €1490 CAI-LHR//DUB-LHR-JFK-LAX-HNL-JFK-LHR-CAI April 2018.
Many more routings possible, some also increase price.
AOH,
December it's possible, not easy, can be done, but you need flexibility.
June 2018 easier.
