Flight Changes
Many changes have been made due to Etihad schedule changes. In some cases, connecting flights are being swapped to nonstops. Some have been able to get this changed back by calling Etihad, others have not. You may have to repeat call / HUCA to get it switched back.

Update 12/28/14: Etihad will honor the fare per Forbes article.

When a blog screams: "MISTAKE FARE!!! BOOK NOW!!! DON'T CALL THE AIRLINE!!!

A lot of the questions and "troubles" seen in this thread are from people new to FT and mistake fares.

Just got off my ORD-AUH. One of the best flights I've been on.

The check in counter opened late, and they were pretty stingy about the weight of the carry on, but I was able to smile my way through.

Boarding was a mess- you know the annoying people who are in the last boarding zone, but go stand in line 20 minutes before boarding? Yeah. Imagine that same scenario, but with a 777 number of people. Not fun.

Being pilots, my friend and I asked to go up to the cockpit pre flight, and were met by great pilots. Interestingly, the 4 pilots were from Taiwan, Germany, and England x2. Great guys. I took a look at the crew rest bunks...AKA the coffins. Little wiggle room, pitch black...basically a makeshift coffin. Not looking forward to those in a few years.

We were seated in 52 A/C. The 2 seats per cluster are definitely a step above the 3 per cluster, but the window seat had a ton of space between the window and seat, so you can't lean to sleep. The amenity kit had an eyeshade, socks, ear plugs, a toothbrush, and toothpaste.

We got our first meal within 2 hours of the flight. We both ordered gluten free, and were some of the first ones to get the meal. The first meal was a fish (cod?) with veggies, a salad, and bread. The fish and veggies were great. Salad was decent. And the bread was terrible. Neither of us are gluten free, but I feel for those who are and have to eat that all of the time (shoutout to you, mom).

I then got some sleep...some being keyword. I thought I had gotten a good number of hours, and low and behold we are only 3 hours into the flight. 10 hours to go! This was my first long hall, and I was expecting it to be brutal after these 3 hours.

They came around with snacks and drinks (complementary wine, beer, etc...potentially champagne too? We became great friends with a FA who brought us champagne, but never saw it offered to anyone else) about every hour. Snacks included caramel corn, ice cream, etc.

Midway through the atlantic, the FA's came on in a frenzy looking for a doctor. We thought 'great, here comes a diversion' as a passenger couldn't breathe. They got it under control, though.

The last meal came 90 minutes before landing. The gluten free meal this time was a chicken and veggies with a fruit cup and the "bread". Also very good...but I liked the fish more.

There are so many entertainment options, including new releases. I watched The Imitation Game and Intersteller, and I also saw Birdman, etc. There are also shows such as Modern Family, The Mentalist, etc. You won't get bored.

Overall, it didn't turn out to be a bad flight. It was pretty full (over 90% in Y), but there was plenty overhead space for a carry on and personal item so you can stick your feet all the way under the seat in front of you.

The headsets they provided were phenomenal.

While the 777 was nice, I'm definitely looking forward to the 787 on Wednesday.

There were a whole bunch of people on my JFK-AUH flight who were talking about how they booked it through a 'Priceline sale for $300'. Just to give an idea as to how travel-savvy they were, when I mentioned that I was going to Manila, they asked where Manila was.

Still though, these wouldn't be the ones insisting on getting AA RDM.
Exactly, some person goes on Priceline, finds a great deal and books it. They have no clue it's a mistake fare. Sure, some people may have read a blog post saying "ERROR FARE" about something, but there's no way to tell who learned of a flight from a blog saying "ERROR FARE" vs. finding it naturally vs. hearing of a sale.

Do you think the Priceline crowd would take the Euro connection, which would always be more expensive, or take the direct? IF they booked the Euro connection unknowingly, would the Priceline crowd complain when EY offered to give them the direct flight and shave 8-12 hours off their travel time?

Etihad is NOT playing dirty.

Route changes are within T&C. Especially when direct route is offered saving several hours.

Etihad is being extremely nice by letting people get refund on non-refundable tickets. (even if process turns out to be bit cumbersome for some)

Cheers

Sorry but disagree.

Seasoned FTer would know not to whine when airline changes the routing to direct flight rather than indirect flight via codeshare partner as per valid T&C. (especially on mistake fare, it is natural for EY to minimize loss)

They're not being "nice" at all. They are minimizing their losses and being a responsible company. If you're going to offer a refund to further that loss prevention even more, at least make it easy.

Yes, really they should be bending over backwards to make it easy for a refund. We all know they are not making any money on these fares.

Yes, they are playing dirty, but within the T&Cs. They are trying to save money by forcing the direct routing. Those that are after the miles from the indirect routing will cancel. EY knows this.

So, how is that dirty?

- loss minimization is responsible business practice
- it is done within T&C
- they re doing what most genuine travellers would consider an upgrade (direct flight cutting down several hours of travel time)

On one hand we tell airlines to follow DOT rules and honor an obvious mistake and then whine about them doing the same within T&C?

Lesson to be learned by newbies who have flocked to FT in last year or so (funnelled by bloggers) that this is not a one-sided game. Just as we can take advantage of loopholes within rules, the airlines can do the same too.

YOMV but IMHO, I do not see this as playing dirty. Knowing that these "want AA miles" folks are not going to be long term EY customers any way (otherwise double miles makes this a good MR), EY should NOT offer refund but let these guys be no-show at the gate.

why should EY make it easy especially when they are not required to do refund at all in the first place? These people are obviously not potential EY fliers. (I personally prefer EY double miles credit. For Y pax, EY is much superior product) I dont think there is any scheme on part of EY to jerk refund seekers. Have you tried process of getting refund out of any US based airlines for a non-refundable ticket even when airline has agreed to do so for special situation?

Lessons to be learned by newbies:
- routings CAN change even at the last minute
- equipment CAN change at the last minute
- unpaid seat selection CAN change even at the gate
- flights CAN get delayed for reasons airline is not reponsible for
- it CAN snow in winter in the northeast
- unplanned labor strikes CAN happen in European countries

- bending backwards for a non-refundable ticket??

- dont think JFK-AUH flights are usually that much oversold. So issuing ANY refund is unwise economically.

EY has certainly not helped themselves by
a) inconsistently agreeing to put people back on AA flights when people call to complain about upgrade to direct flight
b) agreeing to issue refund on non-refundable ticket

You don't seriously believe those things are the same as what EY did, do you?

EY had a system glitch which allowed extra low fares on routes. They honored such fares but tried to minimize the bleeding by forcing all passengers on their metal vs. connections in EU via partners which require taxes and fees which they probably didn't include in their original pricing. Airlines can't charge you more after the initial transactions so the only real complaint is not training their staff to easily process refunds for these fares.

I would still like my AA connection via MAN but doesn't seem as easy as earlier reported.

Oddly, Etihad made back its money on me as I was mid-journey in JNB, had death in the family after repeated calls the change/penalty fee to return three days earlier was more expensive vs. buying a last minute one-way return. Three calls between OTA & Etihad each sending me to the other (OTA = you have used portion of ticket so we no longer control vs. Etihad = you purchased external/special so they must submit the change) - I gave up as needed to get on next flight out via a different OTA which was $100 lower price vs. others online.
