Flight Changes
Many changes have been made due to Etihad schedule changes. In some cases, connecting flights are being swapped to nonstops. Some have been able to get this changed back by calling Etihad, others have not. You may have to repeat call / HUCA to get it switched back.

Update 12/28/14: Etihad will honor the fare per Forbes article.

Suggestions for what to do in ...

AUH (Abu Dhabi) (Check Groupon):
Grand Mosque [wiki] [map]
Kayak the mangroves [trip advisor] [map]
Ferrari World [trip advisor] [map]
Dune bashing/camel ride [trip advisor]

Hotels:
Qsar al Sarab

CPT (Capetown):
Take cable car to top of Table Mountain
Drive the scenic drive to Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope
See Robben Island prison, home to Nelson Mandela for 18 years
V&A Waterfront
Hop-on-Hop Off Bus Cape town (brings you to all scenic landscapes of Cape town (incl Camps bay) w/o hassle and security concerns

JNB (Johannesburg):
Nelson Mandela Square (JNB) / also visit Butchers steak restaurant there
Guided tour to Soweto (JNB)

For JNB/CPT:
- use uber (safe and cheap) / if you travel to Sandton(JNB): use Gautrain from Airport. / review travel advise and do's/don'ts for traveling in JNB city.
- Tons of cheap flights btw CPT and JNB. Always use booking portals like orbitz, skyscanner, etc. to find good fares (for example on Kulula, BA, SAA, Mango, etc.)

MNL (Manila):
Ask on FT (in Destinations) - There are too many islands and beaches in the Philippines to list here.
If you fancy another destination:

$175 R/T to HKG or 7500 Avios
Almost all of Asia is under $200 with LCCs

My wife didn't want to do it but after she said she had a blast(were both 64 y/o). We booked it through the Hotel and I felt it was reasonable with Emirates Travel. Price ended up being ~$65-70 US PP maybe would have been cheaper out of Dubai with shorter travel? She also had a great time with the Falcon.
We also went on the Mangrove Kayaking and I recognized the driver who had a different group 2 days earlier on the Safari trip.

One tip if you can help it don't sit in the 3rd row of seats. It right over the rear axle and easy to get motion sickness. Both of the people in our Toyota Land cruiser had to find a place to barf by our 1st stop lol.
Thanks for the advice! Just to clarify, it doesn't matter if you go from abu dhabi or dubai, both desert safaris go to the same place in the desert?

Success!

It took 2 separate phone calls and almost 30 minutes on the phone, but I just had them rebook my AA connections through MAN for a fall trip.

For those of you who may have flown previously on an AA connection & have a 2nd or 3rd trip on this fare, have them refer to your previous itinerary and based on past practice, you may be successful in getting approval for a new one.

Good luck!

What's TLAR/SWAG? I assume some joke? And what are the stickers you are talking about? Do you need to get stickers on carry on luggage to be able to take on the aircraft? Was the agent lenient with another bag for laptop, reading materials, etc.? What we in the US generally refer to as our personal item.

No you go to different deserts if out are travelling out of Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

There is an hour to hour and half distance between the two cities.

If you are in Dubai, you will go dune bashing in the Romali desert in Sharjah and come back to Dubai for the "arabian night" experience - since consumption of alcohol and activities such as belly dancing is prohibited in the emirate of Sharjah but OK in the emirate of Dubai. When I say Dubai, I mean the emirate of Dubai and not the city area (or to compare, New York state and New York city, which are two different things). So think of the Desert Safari "camp" the equivalent of upstate NY before returning back to the city at the end of your tour.

Not sure how Desert Safaris are handled out of Abu Dhabi - but I would think it is local - The emirate of Abu Dhabi occupies 87% of the entire country.

Also, you might find better answers - in the Travel Section of FT since this thread is more focussed on the actual flight itself.

Any reason you couldn't just use the Google Maps/GPS built into your phone?

Cheers

I'll add to your post since ours was out of Abu Dhabi

It was about a 90 minute drive to the desert from downtown, but we stopped once for a bathroom break for the ladies in our group. I'm not as knowledgeable as zoonil about what desert we were in, but I do know that everyone I talked to on our trip was from Abu Dhabi (including some friends who got this mistake fare!). Alcohol was offered at the dinner...except my friend and I are only 19 so got turned away.

We booked through Emirates Tours or something like that.

For those of you who may have flown previously on an AA connection & have a 2nd or 3rd trip on this fare, have them refer to your previous itinerary and based on past practice, you may be successful in getting approval for a new one.

Good luck!
glad to hear this, i'm going to keep trying.

i got a 'no' today, from a female agent, after she spent about half an hour trying, but i'll try again in a day or so. she said that there would be no code shares allowed on this ticket...and couldn't have been sweeter, although i wish she had been successful in making the changes!
